The Deep South is a descriptive category of the cultural and geographic subregions in the Southern United States. Historically, it is differentiated from the "Upper South" as being the states most dependent on plantation-type agriculture and slavery during the pre–Civil War period. The Deep South was also commonly referred to as the Lower South or the Cotton States. Before the out-migrations at the first half of the 20th century, African-descended peoples comprised the majority of the population in numerous areas and some states. Today, the Deep South is usually delineated as being those states and areas where cultural elements most often thought of as "Southern" exist in their most concentrated form.
The term "Deep South" is defined in a variety of ways:
Stephen John Fry (born 24 August 1957) is an English comedian, actor, writer, presenter and activist.
After a troubled childhood and adolescence, during which he was expelled from two schools and spent three months in prison for credit card fraud, Fry secured a place at Queens' College, Cambridge, where he studied English literature. While at university, he became involved with the Cambridge Footlights, where he met his long-time collaborator Hugh Laurie. As half of the comic double act Fry and Laurie, he co-wrote and co-starred in A Bit of Fry & Laurie and also took the role of Jeeves (with Laurie playing Wooster) in Jeeves and Wooster.
Fry's acting roles include a Golden Globe Award–nominated lead performance in the film Wilde, Melchett in the BBC television series Blackadder, the title character in the television series Kingdom, a recurring guest role as Dr Gordon Wyatt on the crime series Bones, and as Gordon Deitrich in the dystopian thriller V for Vendetta. He has also written and presented several documentary series, including the Emmy Award–winning Stephen Fry: The Secret Life of the Manic Depressive, which saw him explore his bipolar disorder, and the travel series Stephen Fry in America. He is also the long-time host of the BBC television quiz show QI.
Bernard Freeman (born March 19, 1973), professionally known by his stage name Bun B, is an American rapper and was one half of the southern rap duo UGK (UnderGround Kingz). He is also a guest lecturer at Rice University, located in Houston, Texas. He released his third official solo album, Trill OG, on August 3, 2010, which received a 5 Mic "Classic" rating in The Source magazine - the first album in over five years to receive the honor.
In the late 1980s, Pimp C started the rap duo UGK. He first released a demo tape titled "Underground King" which didn't feature Bun B on the track. Instead, it featured Pimp C's friend Mitchell Queen. Bun B and friend Jalon Jackson had their own group called P.A. Militia. Both groups joined forces and formed the group 4 Black Ministers. Queen and Jackson later left the group leaving Pimp C and Bun B so they decided to revert to UGK. The demo Pimp C recorded with Mitchell Queen, Underground King, caught the attention of an independent label in Houston called Bigtyme Records. They then released an extended play titled The Southern Way. The release of this record caught the attention of Jive Records. While recording their debut album, Too Hard to Swallow, many of the songs had content too explicit for the album, so Bigtyme Records released an extended play titled Banned before the album was released, including all the songs that were too explicit for Too Hard to Swallow. The song "Pocket Full of Stones" became the first UGK song to get major airplay throughout the United States. Their second album, Super Tight..., followed in 1994. Their third album, Ridin' Dirty, peaked at number 2 on the R&B Charts in 1996, and at number 15 on the Billboard 200. After releasing their fourth studio album, Dirty Money, Pimp C got sentenced to jail.
Stephen Fry in America is a six part BBC television series in which Stephen Fry travels across the United States of America, a country in which he was almost born. Just before Fry was born, his father was offered a job at Princeton University, in New Jersey, but chose to turn it down in favour of Hampstead. In the six-part series he travels, mostly in a London cab, through all 50 U.S. states. Episode 02 Stephen Fry tries to find out what makes the South so distinctive.
Bun B is a Houston-based MC, activist, and Rice University lecturer, who makes up one half of the legendary rap duo U.G.K. that’s credited with pioneering the sound of Southern hip hop. He’s also VICE’s newest political correspondent, covering the garish and unpredictable rockfight that is the 2016 presidential race. This week, we sent him to join the traveling circus in South Carolina, where Donald Trump is expected to win the Republican primary on Saturday. For a two days, he immersed himself in the state’s red-meat brand of conservative politics, talking to the Tea Partiers, Trump supporters, and GOP presidential candidates to find out what’s really going on in the lead up to the first Southern primary vote of 2016. The Southern United States—commonly referred to as the American South, Dixie, or simply the South— is an area in the southeastern and south-central United States. The region is known for its distinct culture and history, having developed its own customs, musical styles and varied cuisines that have helped distinguish it from the rest of the United States. The South has traditionally shown the strongest instances and rules favoring racism against Blacks and Hispanics.[2][3] The Southern ethnic heritage is diverse.[4] The central factor has been the consequence of plantation dependence on slave labor; the presence of a large proportion of African Americans in the population; and the Reconstruction Era after the Civil War. Historically, the South relied heavily on agriculture, and was highly...
Two young Black men were found dead in a river in Mississippi. The year was 1964, and many suspected the men died at the hands of the KKK. But this was the South in the 60s; the case was never solved. Decades later, filmmaker David Ridgen returned to Mississippi with the brother of one of the victims. What they discovered there cracked open a 40-year-old cold case and changed the course of history. I was born in the south
Given to a town raised on handsome mouth
Born on the same day as the sun
Holding in the Earth, seen one by one
A dot in the cold, waiting to rot
Frozen like stone, all is for not
All that I am is churning inside
All that I am is screaming...
Go and get my bones
Bring 'em to the deep south
Oh yeah somewhere they can thaw out
Here in the deep south
Go and get my bones
Bring 'em to the deep south
Oh yeah somewhere they can thaw out
Here in the deep south
I feel it in my skin
Coming undone again and again
Torn at the seam my heart is sewn
Holding back the tears she'd on my own
If dying is bold, then courage I've got
I could grow old, but I forgot
All that I am is churning inside
The voice in my head is screaming...
Go and get my bones
Bring 'em to the deep south
Oh yeah somewhere they can thaw out
Here in the deep south
Go and get my bones
Bring 'em to the deep south
Oh yeah somewhere they can thaw out
Here in the deep south
I was born in the south
Given to a town raised on handsome mouth
Born on the same day as the sun
Counting every heart beat one by one
Go and get my bones
Bring 'em to the deep south
Oh yeah somewhere they can thaw out
Here in the deep south
Go and get my bones
Bring 'em to the deep south
Oh yeah somewhere they can thaw out
Here in the deep south
