National Rural Employment Guarantee Act 2005 was later renamed as the "Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act" (or, MGNREGA), is an Indian labour law and social security measure that aims to guarantee the 'right to work'.
It aims to enhance livelihood security in rural areas by providing at least 100 days of wage employment in a financial year to every household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work
* This scheme started as Nation Rural Employment Guarantee Act of 2005
* the largest and most ambitious social security and public works programme in the world".
In its World Development Report 2014, the World Bank termed it a "stellar example of rural development
Another aim of MGNREGA is to create durable assets (such as roads, canals, ponds, wells).
Employment is to be provided within 5 km of an applicant's residence, and minimum wages are to be paid.
If work is not provided within 15 days of applying, applicants are entitled to an unemployment allowance. Thus, employment under MGNREGA is a legal entitlement
MGNREGA is to be implemented mainly by gram panchayats (GPs). The involvement of contractors is banned.
Labour-intensive tasks like creating infrastructure for water harvesting, drought relief and flood control are preferred.
Apart from providing economic security and creating rural assets, NREGA can help in protecting the environment, empowering rural women, reducing rural-urban migration and fostering social equity, among others."
The law provides many safeguards to promote its effective management and implementation.
The act explicitly mentions the principles and agencies for implementation, list of allowed works, financing pattern, monitoring and evaluation, and most importantly the detailed measures to ensure transparency and accountability

Achievements In 10 Years:
* 3.13 L Cr Rupees allocated
* 71% of this given as wage payment to workers
* Total 1980 Cr person days employment generated
* 97.3 million registered active MGNREGS workers in which approx 40% are SC and ST
* 55.3 million has ADHAAR linked bank accounts
* 55% total workers are women,
while Kerala, Tamilnadu has 92% and 86% women workers respectively.
UP and Jharkhand has only 24% and 32% women workers respectively.
Work Type:
* 28% Rural Sanitation
* 18% Individual land work
* 14% Rural Connectivity
* 11% Drought Proofing
* 9% Water Conservation, Micro Irrigation etc
Effects:
* According to NCAER, it helped in lowering poverty by 32% and prevented 14 million people from falling into BPL
* According to Interim Demographic Health Survey 2(IDHS2), 38% reduction in SC poor and 28% in ST
* Reliance of poor people on local moneylenders has decline
* Money reached to poor people for education of their children
Lacunas :--
* Slowing Indian Economy slowed down speed of this scheme
* Faulting job scenario
* Corruption has developed roots in this scheme
* According to CAG report, Bihar UP and Maharshtra accounts for 46% of Indian poor while only 20% of money is allocated to these states

National Rural Employment Guarantee Act 2005
National Rural Employment Guarantee Act 2005 (or, NREGA No 42) was later renamed as the "Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act" (or, MGNREGA), is an Indian labour law and social security measure that aims to guarantee the 'right to work'. It aims to enhance livelihood security in rural areas by providing at least 100 days of wage employment in a financial year to every household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work.
Starting from 200 districts on 2 February 2006, the NREGA covered all the districts of India from 1 April 2008. The statute is hailed by the government as "the largest and most ambitious social security and public works programme in the world". In its World Development Report 2014, the World Bank termed it a "stellar example of rural development".
The MGNREGA was initiated with the objective of "enhancing livelihood security in rural areas by providing at least 100 days of guaranteed wage employment in a financial year, to every household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work". Narendra Modi
Narendra Damodardas Modi (Gujarati: [nəreːnd̪rə d̪ɑːmoːd̪ərəd̪ɑːs moːd̪iː], born 17 September 1950) is the 15th and current Prime Minister of India, in office since 26 May 2014. Modi, a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was the Chief Minister of Gujarat from 2001 to 2014 and is the Member of Parliament (MP) from Varanasi. He led the BJP in the 2014 general election, which gave the party a majority in the Lok Sabha (the lower house of the Indian parliament) – a first for any party since 1984 – and was credited for 2014 BJP electoral victories in the states of Haryana, Maharashtra, Jharkhand and Jammu and Kashmir.
Since taking office as Prime Minister, Modi's administration has focused on reforming and modernising India's infrastructure and government, reducing bureaucracy, encouraging increased foreign direct investment, improving national standards of health and sanitation and improving foreign relations. Modi has been appreciated for starting initiatives like Swachh Bharat Mission, Make in India and Digital India. Earlier, as Chief Minister of Gujarat, Modi's economic policies (credited with encouraging economic growth in Gujarat) have been praised, although his administration has also been criticised for failing to significantly improve the human development in the state and failing to prevent the 2002 Gujarat riots. A Hindu nationalist and a former member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Modi remains a controversial figure domestically and internationally, despite his progressivism. Known for his tech savvy image, he is the second most followed politician on social media after U.S. President Barack Obama.

National Rural Employment Guarantee Act 2005 was later renamed as the "Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act" (or, MGNREGA), is an Indian labour law and social security measure that aims to guarantee the 'right to work'.
It aims to enhance livelihood security in rural areas by providing at least 100 days of wage employment in a financial year to every household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work
* This scheme started as Nation Rural Employment Guarantee Act of 2005
* the largest and most ambitious social security and public works programme in the world".
In its World Development Report 2014, the World Bank termed it a "stellar example of rural development
Another aim of MGNREGA is to create durable assets (such as roads, canals, ponds, wells).
Employment is to be provided within 5 km of an applicant's residence, and minimum wages are to be paid.
If work is not provided within 15 days of applying, applicants are entitled to an unemployment allowance. Thus, employment under MGNREGA is a legal entitlement
MGNREGA is to be implemented mainly by gram panchayats (GPs). The involvement of contractors is banned.
Labour-intensive tasks like creating infrastructure for water harvesting, drought relief and flood control are preferred.
Apart from providing economic security and creating rural assets, NREGA can help in protecting the environment, empowering rural women, reducing rural-urban migration and fostering social equity, among others."
The law provides many safeguards to promote its effective management and implementation.
The act explicitly mentions the principles and agencies for implementation, list of allowed works, financing pattern, monitoring and evaluation, and most importantly the detailed measures to ensure transparency and accountability

Details:

* Every willing household (not individual) will take advantage of this scheme via 15 days prior request

Achievements In 10 Years:
* 3.13 L Cr Rupees allocated
* 71% of this given as wage payment to workers
* Total 1980 Cr person days employment generated
* 97.3 million registered active MGNREGS workers in which approx 40% are SC and ST
* 55.3 million has ADHAAR linked bank accounts
* 55% total workers are women,
while Kerala, Tamilnadu has 92% and 86% women workers respectively.
UP and Jharkhand has only 24% and 32% women workers respectively.
Work Type:
* 28% Rural Sanitation
* 18% Individual land work
* 14% Rural Connectivity
* 11% Drought Proofing
* 9% Water Conservation, Micro Irrigation etc
Effects:
* According to NCAER, it helped in lowering poverty by 32% and prevented 14 million people from falling into BPL
* According to Interim Demographic Health Survey 2(IDHS2), 38% reduction in SC poor and 28% in ST
* Reliance of poor people on local moneylenders has decline
* Money reached to poor people for education of their children
Lacunas :--
* Slowing Indian Economy slowed down speed of this scheme
* Faulting job scenario
* Corruption has developed roots in this scheme
* According to CAG report, Bihar UP and Maharshtra accounts for 46% of Indian poor while only 20% of money is allocated to these states
* worth 2400 Cr Rupees wrongly released fund
* Effect of employment on poor is not up to expected line (no skill development)
* Scheme is for 100 days but out peak performance is 54 days in 2009-10
* In 2014-15 avg work were 38 days
