A paramedic in Australia is a health care professional who responds to and treats all types of medical and trauma emergencies outside of a hospital setting before and during transportation to an appropriate medical facility. Paramedics also work in the inter-facility transport environment where a paramedic will continue or upgrade medical care to a higher level while transporting a patient from one healthcare facility to another. Paramedics are able to treat patients in the pre-hospital setting, and can transport them to a hospital-based emergency department if deemed necessary. In Australia, use of the term "paramedic" is not restricted, registered or licensed. There are currently substantial efforts in Australia to change this situation, most notably through Paramedics Australasia. Prior to the 1990s most paramedics were known as "ambulance officers".
The term Paramedic is not defined in Australian law, and definitions vary widely. One definition is:
"A Paramedic is a specialist health care professional who responds to requests for assistance and attends people suffering acute health crises of any nature. Paramedics provide health assessment, initial diagnosis, design a treatment plan and manage the patient’s crisis. The Paramedic may provide adequate treatment that may resolve the crisis and may or may not refer the patient onto another health professional. The Paramedic may continue treatment and provide patient transfer to an appropriate health care facility for ongoing referral and patient care."
David Cullen Bain (born 27 March 1972) is a New Zealander who featured in one of the country's most notable murder cases. He was convicted in May 1995 of the murders of his parents and siblings in Dunedin on 20 June 1994. He was acquitted when retried on the same charges 14 years later.
Bain served 13 and a half years of a life sentence before successfully appealing his original convictions to the Privy Council in May 2007. Finding there had been a substantial miscarriage of justice, the Privy Council quashed his convictions and ordered a retrial. After several attempts by David Bain's lawyers to obtain a stay in proceedings failed, he was bailed pending the retrial which began in Christchurch on 6 March 2009 and ended 5 June 2009 with his acquittal on all charges.
This has been one of New Zealand's most complex and controversial murder cases. Aside from the debate about whether someone other than David Bain killed his entire immediate family, questions have been raised about the police investigation, juror conduct and criminality, court decisions about the admissibility of evidence, and decisions by the New Zealand Court of Appeal.
The Ishrat Jahan encounter case refers to the encounter killing of four people claimed to be Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) operatives by the Ahmedabad Police Crime Branch in 2004. The victims included Ishrat Jahan Raza, a 19-year old college girl from Mumbai, and three men: Pranesh Pillai (alias Javed Gulam Sheikh), Amjad Ali Rana and Zeeshan Johar. Multiple judicial inquiries by Indian authorities, in 2009 and 2011, concluded that the encounter was fake, and the victims were killed in police custody.
The encounter was carried out by a team led by DIG D.G. Vanjara, who was later jailed for his involvement in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter. The police alleged that Ishrat and her associates were LeT operatives involved in a plot to assassinate the then Chief Minister of Gujarat, Narendra Modi. Later, an investigation was launched into the allegations that Ishrat was killed in a fake encounter. In 2004, a Lahore-based publication affiliated with LeT claimed that Ishrat and her companions were operatives, but in 2007, Jamaat-ud-Dawa, the political wing of the LeT retracted the statement as a "journalistic mistake", offering apology to Ishrat's family. After a long investigation, in 2009, an Ahmedabad Metropolitan court ruled that the encounter was staged. The decision was challenged by the Gujarat State government, and taken to the High Court. In 2010, some media outlets reported that the convicted terrorist David Headley had implicated Ishrat in terrorist activities in a statement given to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). However, the NIA called these reports as "baseless". After further investigation, in 2011, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) told the Gujarat High Court that the encounter was not genuine, and the victims were killed prior to the date of the staged encounter.
