On 22 November 2003, shortly after takeoff from Baghdad, Iraq, an Airbus A300 cargo plane owned by European Air Transport ("DHL") was struck on the left wing tip by a surface-to-air missile. Severe wing damage resulted in a fire and complete loss of hydraulic flight control systems. Because outboard left wing fuel tank 1A was full at takeoff, there was no fuel-air vapour explosion. Liquid jet fuel dropped away as 1A disintegrated. Inboard fuel tank 1 was pierced and leaking.
Returning to Baghdad, the three-man crew made an injury-free landing of the crippled aircraft, using differential engine thrust as the only pilot input. This is despite major damage to a wing, total loss of hydraulic control, a faster than safe landing speed and a ground path which veered off the runway surface and onto unprepared ground.
Paris Match Reporter Claudine Vernier-Palliez accompanied a Fedayeen commando unit on their strike mission against the DHL aircraft.
Sara Daniel, a French weekly newsmagazine journalist claimed receipt, from an unknown source, of a video that showed insurgents, faces concealed, firing a missile at the A300. Daniel was researching a feature about Iraqi resistance groups but she disclaimed any specific knowledge of the people who carried out the attack, despite being present at the moment of attack.

Sending a shipment with DHL Express is easy. With our simple-to-use shipping tools you can print out your own Waybill and book a collection.
Once our courier has collected your shipment, it enters the dependable DHL Express network. Your shipment will first be sorted at a DHL Service Centre, before travelling on to a DHL Hub where it is sorted for onward travel, so that your shipment can be loaded onto a DHL aircraft.
The information needed for Customs clearance is sent automatically to the final destination so that your shipment is free to be delivered on touchdown. We're currently in the Park Royal area of London, with our northwest
London service centre. We are looking at putting
a new service centre into this new location, moving from a 16,000 thousand-square-foot unit to a 61,000 square foot unit with a 1.3 million pound investment in capital.
We're going to put direct load in to the site which means that all vehicles and PUD vehicles will load and unload from a conveyor on a platform. The main difference is that this is going to give the business growth in this area, the business is seeing double-digit growth over the last few years.
This site is going to have a minimum capacity of five years with a future capacity of 10 years. The material will come in here and the conveyor structure will go in a w-shape around the whole warehouse enabling us to have load positions for all of the PUD roots as a direct load site.
From a health and safety point of view there's single movement of parcels instead of multiple movements of parcels, there's dedicated area's for vehicle movement, there's dedicated places where pedestrians go, there's segregated area for forklift movement, all the type of things that we need to consider in a business delivering parcels. The TLX machine that's behind me is the first of its kind for DHL UK in a service centre, these are normally operated in hubs. It's the first one in a service centre, basically it operates by reading the postcode bar code on a package and then it identifies and tracks the parcel as it goes around the conveyor system and fires it down the correct finger for the relevant vans.
Certainly from a staff point of view they can see the positivity just in terms of the location, the size of the place that we're operating in now and that calmness goes along with the safety aspects. In the old location whilst we were having
to manage those health and safety risks, it's actually a much more conducive
place to work now in terms of making sure that staff are happy. The benefits of the TLX machine is a fully automated and dynamic system where by it reads the bar codes as it goes through, spaces the parcels, takes the weight and the dimensions of each parcel as it goes through the TLX machine whilst in outbound mode.
For the Go Green initiative that we have in the UK's we actively look to reduce our carbon footprint in everything we do. So again moving from a site that's 16,000 square foot to a site that's 61,000 square foot you would think that's going to give us more carbon footprint but actually it isn't because the processes that we put within the site in terms of heating, lighting, in terms of the fast shut roller doors in the warehouse to keep the heat in the building so you're not having to put the heating on more, we're seeing about a 27% reduction in CO2.
The capabilities of the TLX is 1800 parcels per hour versus a weight and volume machine which is 300 per hour so if we've got two weight and volume machines we're doing 600 per hour. If we've got the TLX machine, we're now giving ourselves 3 times that capacity per hour of parcels through put.
The next step is to consolidate here, to improve our first time delivery hit rate for residential deliveries, to improve our right day delivery and to ensure we give the customers the very best service performance that we can at the right cost.

DHL Express
DHL Express is a division of the German logistics company Deutsche Post DHL providing international express mail services. Deutsche Post is the world's largest logistics company operating around the world, particularly in sea and air mail.
Originally founded in 1969 to deliver documents between San Francisco and Honolulu, the company expanded its service throughout the world by the late 1970s. The company was primarily interested in offshore and inter-continental deliveries, but the success of FedEx prompted their own intra-US expansion starting in 1983. DHL expanded to countries that could not be served by any other delivery service, including Cuba, the Soviet Union, Eastern Bloc, Iraq, Iran, China, Vietnam and North Korea.
In 1998, Deutsche Post began to acquire shares in DHL. It finally reached majority ownership in 2001, and completed the purchase in 2002. Deutsche Post then effectively absorbed DHL into its Express division, while expanding the use of the DHL brand to other Deutsche Post divisions, business units and subsidiaries. On 22 November 2003, shortly after takeoff from Baghdad, Iraq, an Airbus A300 cargo plane owned by European Air Transport ("DHL") was struck on the left wing tip by a surface-to-air missile. Severe wing damage resulted in a fire and complete loss of hydraulic flight control systems. Because outboard left wing fuel tank 1A was full at takeoff, there was no fuel-air vapour explosion. Liquid jet fuel dropped away as 1A disintegrated. Inboard fuel tank 1 was pierced and leaking. We're currently in the Park Royal area of London, with our northwest
London service centre. We are looking at putting
a new service centre into this new location, moving from a 16,000 thousand-square-foot unit to a 61,000 square foot unit with a 1.3 million pound investment in capital.
We're going to put direct load in to the site which means that all vehicles and PUD vehicles will load and unload from a conveyor on a platform. The main difference is that this is going to give the business growth in this area, the business is seeing double-digit growth over the last few years.
This site is going to have a minimum capacity of five years with a future capacity of 10 years. The material will come in here and the conveyor structure will go in a w-shape around the whole warehouse enabling us to have load positions for all of the PUD roots as a direct load site.
From a health and safety point of view there's single movement of parcels instead of multiple movements of parcels, there's dedicated area's for vehicle movement, there's dedicated places where pedestrians go, there's segregated area for forklift movement, all the type of things that we need to consider in a business delivering parcels. The TLX machine that's behind me is the first of its kind for DHL UK in a service centre, these are normally operated in hubs. It's the first one in a service centre, basically it operates by reading the postcode bar code on a package and then it identifies and tracks the parcel as it goes around the conveyor system and fires it down the correct finger for the relevant vans.
Certainly from a staff point of view they can see the positivity just in terms of the location, the size of the place that we're operating in now and that calmness goes along with the safety aspects. In the old location whilst we were having
to manage those health and safety risks, it's actually a much more conducive
place to work now in terms of making sure that staff are happy. The benefits of the TLX machine is a fully automated and dynamic system where by it reads the bar codes as it goes through, spaces the parcels, takes the weight and the dimensions of each parcel as it goes through the TLX machine whilst in outbound mode.
For the Go Green initiative that we have in the UK's we actively look to reduce our carbon footprint in everything we do. So again moving from a site that's 16,000 square foot to a site that's 61,000 square foot you would think that's going to give us more carbon footprint but actually it isn't because the processes that we put within the site in terms of heating, lighting, in terms of the fast shut roller doors in the warehouse to keep the heat in the building so you're not having to put the heating on more, we're seeing about a 27% reduction in CO2.
The capabilities of the TLX is 1800 parcels per hour versus a weight and volume machine which is 300 per hour so if we've got two weight and volume machines we're doing 600 per hour. If we've got the TLX machine, we're now giving ourselves 3 times that capacity per hour of parcels through put.
The next step is to consolidate here, to improve our first time delivery hit rate for residential deliveries, to improve our right day delivery and to ensure we give the customers the very best service performance that we can at the right cost.

We're currently in the Park Royal area of London, with our northwest
London service centre. We are looking at putting
a new service centre into this new location, moving from a 16,000 thousand-square-foot unit to a 61,000 square foot unit with a 1.3 million pound investment in capital.
We're going to put direct load in to the site which means that all vehicles and PUD vehicles will load and unload from a conveyor on a platform. The main difference is that this is going to give the business growth in this area, the business is seeing double-digit growth over the last few years.
This site is going to have a minimum capacity of five years with a future capacity of 10 years. The material will come in here and the conveyor structure will go in a w-shape around the whole warehouse enabling us to have load positions for all of the PUD roots as a direct load site.
From a health and safety point of view there's single movement of parcels instead of multiple movements of parcels, there's dedicated area's for vehicle movement, there's dedicated places where pedestrians go, there's segregated area for forklift movement, all the type of things that we need to consider in a business delivering parcels.
