The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is an executive department within the U.S. state of California.
Caltrans manages the state highway system (which includes the California Freeway and Expressway System) and is actively involved with public transportation systems throughout the state. It supports Amtrak California and the Capitol Corridor.
The department is part of the state cabinet-level California State Transportation Agency (CalSTA).
Like the majority of state government agencies, Caltrans is headquartered in Sacramento.
The earliest predecessor of Caltrans was the Bureau of Highways, which was created by the California Legislature and signed into law by Governor James Budd in 1895. This agency consisted of three commissioners who were charged with analyzing the state road system and making recommendations. At the time, there was no state highway system, since roads were purely a local responsibility. California's roads consisted of crude dirt roads maintained by county governments, as well as some paved roads within city boundaries, and this ad hoc system was no longer adequate for the needs of the state's rapidly growing population. After the commissioners submitted their report to the governor on November 25, 1896, the legislature replaced the Bureau with the Department of Highways.
California (i/ˌkælᵻˈfɔːrnjə/ KAL-ə-FORN-yə, /ˌkælᵻˈfɔːrniə/ KAL-ə-FAWR-nee-ə) is a state located on the West Coast of the United States. It is the most populous U.S. state, with 39 million people, and the third largest state by area (after Alaska and Texas). California is bordered by Oregon to the north, Nevada to the east, Arizona to the southeast, and the Mexican state of Baja California to the south. It contains the nation's second most populous census statistical area (Greater Los Angeles Area) and the fifth most populous (San Francisco Bay Area), and eight of the nation's 50 most populated cities (Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, San Francisco, Fresno, Sacramento, Long Beach, and Oakland). Sacramento has been the state capital since 1854.
What is now California was first settled by various Native American tribes before being explored by a number of European expeditions during the 16th and 17th centuries. It was then claimed by the Spanish Empire as part of Alta California in the larger territory of New Spain. Alta California became a part of Mexico in 1821 following its successful war for independence, but was ceded to the United States in 1848 after the Mexican–American War. The western portion of Alta California was organized as the State of California, which was admitted as the 31st state on September 9, 1850. The California Gold Rush starting in 1848 led to dramatic social and demographic change, with large-scale immigration from the east and abroad with an accompanying economic boom.
The Department of Transportation (DOT) is the most common name for a government agency in North America devoted to transportation. The largest is the United States Department of Transportation, which oversees interstate travel and is a federal agency. All U.S. states, Canadian provinces, and many local agencies also have similar organizations and provide enforcement through DOT officers within their respective jurisdictions.

In our latest installment of the "On the Job with Caltrans" series, we focus on what it takes to keep state highways moving safely for travelers. Director Malcolm Dougherty shadowed Caltrans crews in Los Angeles and recognized the incredible work that the 6,000 men and women in the state's Division of Maintenance do when responding to emergencies, clearing snow, fixing guardrail and potholes, changing lightbulbs and keeping traffic signals operable -- in other words, ensuring motorists' safety!
Ever wonder what Caltrans workers do to build, maintain and manage our highway system here in the Golden State? Well, now you have a chance to find out by watching "On the Job with Caltrans," a new video series that focuses on the people who work at Caltrans. The premiere episode of this new series features Caltrans District 3's Sierra Snow Fighters. See and hear what it's like to work a chain control checkpoint, drive a snow plow or even save a wayward kitten. Meet the staff who not only battle the elements but face the constant danger of distracted motorists, all while keeping our highways open for the motoring public. We hope you enjoy it!
In this Caltrans News Flash, spokesperson Rick Estrada discusses California’s massive project to identify, cut and remove dead and dying trees from alongside state highways. There are more than 60 million affected trees in the state, primarily stressed by drought and infected with the bark beetle – and many of those could contribute to road hazards or wildfires. This project will keep our highways safe for travelers, truckers and emergency services, as well as reduce fuel for potential fires. The tree removal work also provides an economic boost to counties struggling with this epidemic. See how Caltrans determines which trees come down, what happens after they’ve been removed and why this project has economic, social and environmental benefits for all Californians.
In this Caltrans News Flash, spokesperson Shannon Brinias discloses a new critical element of the Interstate 80 SMART Corridor in the Bay Area, and provides a tutorial about the new graphic directions. The overhead signs are going “live” on August 25, and potentially impacting motorists traveling on the busy I-80 corridor from the Carquinez Bridge to the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. The new overhead signs will enhance safety by providing motorists with critical information about incidents ahead. An average of 25 collisions or lane-blocking incidents are reported in this corridor weekly. Responsive signage and active management will guide motorists out of blocked lanes and provide a clear, safer path for emergency responders.

The Prelinger Archive has long been known for bringing ephermerial films to the masses. But this piece is just a quirkly little jem. This film, shot between Santa Cruz and San Jose, California some time in the mid-1980s (circa 1986 going by some of the car models and designs), is the film for a driving simulator. The best part is how the film is shot; rather than smooth motion, it is done with a rapid stop-motion, giving the drive along state routes 9 and 135 a surreal feeling. Add the time code at the bottom (for the computer to choose the best scanerio), and you have great bit of source material. Reviewer: Wilford B. Wolf

This video was originally a slide show and script that was put together by a long time Caltrans employee, Structural Engineer Norman Root. This was his history of Caltrans (aka State Highway Division of The Public Works Department of the State of California). I was still new here at Caltrans in 1995 and was very impressed by Mr. Root's achievement. Slide shows had been the main stay of the department's outreach program since the early 1960's and I feel that Norman was using technology he was familiar with at the time. I was on the cutting edge of Technology when I arrived here in District 7 Graphics Department, since I had a Beta SP Camera and a Video Toaster on the Amiga so I decided to "enhance" Norman's wonderful presentation. I set up a slide projector in our old Room 12 Auditoriu...
