Vinyasa flow yoga

Derived from hatha yoga, the term ‘vinyasa’ means a flowing movement linked with the breath.

Practitioners learn to move from one pose to the next on an inhale or exhale.

Continued movement or flow from one pose to another gives a cardiovascular workout. A regular practice of vinyasa yoga will strengthen muscles, increase endurance and make you more flexible, as well as help combat anxiety, depression and insomnia.

Most vinyasa flow classes with begin with sun salutations, a series of postures and gestures done in succession, including poses downward dog, plank, upward dog, standing forward bend, raised hand pose and mountain pose. Sun salutations are practised int he first half of class, and are often followed by a series of forward bends, backward bends, twists, a shoulder and/ or head stand, and eventually, a rest in corpse pose.

Warming and purifying, this approach to yoga will have you moving smoothly from one pose to the next, to build a subtle flow of energy and increased stamina.

Where to do vinyasa flow

Vinyasa yoga classes are offered at gyms, health clubs, yoga studios and wellbeing retreats across the country. Once in regular attendance, purchase a yoga mat and continue to practice at home. One hour of vinyasa flow in the morning will set you up to be strong and flexible throughout the day.
