Pilates

Pilates was developed in Germany in the early part of the 20th century, and focuses on controlling the core postural muscles.

Pilates became particularly popular in Australia at the beginning of the 21st century, and counts more than 25 million people worldwide as devotees.

How to do Pilates

Lie on your back with your abdominal muscles contracted, your head and neck off the ground and your chest lifted. Reach one leg up to the ceiling and hold it with both hands behind the calf. Gently pull the leg towards you and deepen your abdominal contraction.

Inhale to change legs and repeat. Alternate legs, with a pulse on each exhale, for 10 to 20 repetitions, at a pace you can control.

Where to do Pilates

Most health and gym clubs offer Pilates classes, while a Pilates studio offer a whole range of different classes, as well as private instruction.
