Capoeira

You might think that capoeira is a form of martial arts, or perhaps a dance, but really it's a practice that's a form of expression all of its own.

The history of capoeira dates back more than 500 years to Brazil's slave trade. The mix of African cultures were unable to communicate in their variety of dialects, so an art form using musical instruments and movement was created. Today, capoeira is celebrated as a form of freedom, expression and individualism.

The capoeira workout

Capoeira is strongly cardiovascular, develops muscularity and also increases flexibility. But as well as the physical, there's a strong emphasis on the mental aspect of capoeira.

Progression through capoeira involves working your way up through a series of colour-coded cords (belts) until you reach black belt. While some work their way up to become instructors, others are happy to keep progressing as students.

Capoeira is suitable for anyone aged from five to 75 and beyond. Many start their capoeira journey seeking the physicality, but end up becoming entranced with the musicality and soul of the art form.
