A talk on the restored classical Attic Greek pronunciation by the Joint Association of Classical Teachers. Uploaded for autodidactic purposes. There seems to be a lot of difference in opinion on what Ancient Greek sounded like and how we should pronounce it today. Being both an ancient and a living language there are many possibilities based upon whichever time or place we choose to focus. One is at liberty to recognise the legitimacy of various ways to speak Greek and when sat with a classical text reading aloud one can alternate as one likes. However when making a recording choices have to be made. I myself have chosen not to worry too much about which pronunciation I am using as long as I try to remain consistent throughout a piece. I created this as an experiment to see if I could make learning ancient Greek more entertaining. I also wanted to see if I could keep the grammar "in the background," an approach used for modern languages but almost never for classical Greek or Latin. The target level is beginners who have covered only a few chapters in any ancient Greek beginners' book. The first part is just a reading of the short story word for word, with the English translation given immediately after each Greek word. Except for one note, the grammar is all visual during the story reading and translation. Following the story are slides with all the grammar you need to understand this Greek story. If you have any ideas for my next video let me know, εἰ δοκεῖ. χαῖρε!

Watch the previous video (containing Ubykh, Old English, Proto-Germanic, and more): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxQCf6eaToI The second video in the series. I decided to focus on Indo-European languages for this one. Featuring (in chronological order): Old Church Slavonic, Old Irish, Gothic, Classical Latin, Ancient (Attic) Greek, Avestan, and the (hypothetical, but very probable) common ancestor of all these ancient languages, Proto-Indo-European. Info on the languages: Old Church Slavonic (or Slověnĭskŭ Językŭ, its endonym) was the first Slavic literary language, used from the ninth to eleventh century before splitting into the Church Slavonic languages. It is the oldest attested Slavic languages. Old Irish (or Goídelc), used from the fifth to ninth centuries, was a...
