Tortured Palestinians prisoners denied doctor visits

Bethlehem/PNN/

Israeli Prison Service (IPS) refused last year to allow doctors’ visits to Palestinian prisoners who were subjected to torture while in detention, Haaretz Hebrew newspaper said.

The paper quoted The Public Committee Against Torture in Israel as saying that the IPS has continued to refuse to allow those who were subjected to torture to meet with doctors.

The Israeli human rights group finds that prisoners waited years for medical tests to verify claims of mistreatment.

In 2013 and 2014 only five such tests were conducted for prisoners who were tortured, according to the group’s data.

In 2015, the committee submitted two examination demands, however only one request was met.

In one case, the IPS has changed its mind in 2016, and an exam is expected to be conducted soon.

The committee pointed out that since 2001 nearly 1,000 torture complaints have been submitted against the Israeli general security apparatus the Shin Bet.
