For multiple-cylinder steam engines, see Compound steam engine and Triple-expansion steam engine
A multi-cylinder engine is a reciprocating internal combustion engine with multiple cylinders. It can be either a 2-stroke or 4-stroke engine, and can be either Diesel or spark-ignition. The cylinders and the crankshaft which is driven by and co-ordinates the motion of the pistons can be configured in a wide variety of ways. Multi-cylinder engines offer a number of advantages over single-cylinder engines, chiefly with their ability to neutralize imbalances by having corresponding mechanisms moving in opposing directions during the operation of the engine. A multiple-cylinder engine is also capable of delivering higher revolutions per minute (RPM) than a single-cylinder engine of equal displacement, because the stroke of the pistons is reduced, decreasing the distance necessary for a piston to travel back and forth per each rotation of the crankshaft, and thus limiting the piston speed for a given RPM. Typically, the more cylinders an engine has, the higher the RPM's it can attain for a given displacement and technology level, at a cost of increased friction losses and complexity. Peak torque is also reduced, but the total horsepower is increased due to the higher RPM's attained.
A cylinder is the central working part of a reciprocating engine or pump, the space in which a piston travels. Multiple cylinders are commonly arranged side by side in a bank, or engine block, which is typically cast from aluminum or cast iron before receiving precision machine work. Cylinders may be sleeved (lined with a harder metal) or sleeveless (with a wear-resistant coating such as Nikasil). A sleeveless engine may also be referred to as a "patent-bore engine".
A cylinder's displacement, or swept volume, can be calculated by multiplying its cross-sectional area (the square of half the bore by pi) by the distance the piston travels within the cylinder (the stroke). The engine displacement can be calculated by multiplying the swept volume of one cylinder by the number of cylinders.
Presented symbolically,
A piston is seated inside each cylinder by several metal piston rings fitted around its outside surface in machined grooves; typically two for compressional sealing and one to seal the oil. The rings make near contact with the cylinder walls (sleeved or sleeveless), riding on a thin layer of lubricating oil; essential to keep the engine from seizing and necessitating a cylinder wall's durable surface.
The inline-four engine or straight-four engine is a type of inline internal combustion four-cylinder engine with all four cylinders mounted in a straight line, or plane along the crankcase. The single bank of cylinders may be oriented in either a vertical or an inclined plane with all the pistons driving a common crankshaft. Where it is inclined, it is sometimes called a slant-four. In a specification chart or when an abbreviation is used, an inline-four engine is listed either as I4 or L4 (for longitudinal, to avoid confusion between the digit 1 and the letter I).
The inline-four layout is in perfect primary balance and confers a degree of mechanical simplicity which makes it popular for economy cars. However, despite its simplicity, it suffers from a secondary imbalance which causes minor vibrations in smaller engines. These vibrations become more powerful as engine size and power increase, so the more powerful engines used in larger cars generally are more complex designs with more than four cylinders.

Have you ever wondered why 3 and 5 cylinder engines exist? This video covers that and more! 5-cylinder engines have been used for some time in Volvo models like the C30, S40, V50, S60, V60, V70, S80, XC60, XC70 and XC90, but also by GM in vehicles like the baby HUMMER and Volkswagen and Audi in various models. This decade the new odd number is three. With the new 1.0L Ford Ecoboost in the 2015 Forst Fiesta SFE and the 2015 Ford Focus SFE 3-cylinders are coming back to the mainstream. You'll of course also find 3-pots in the Smart ForTwo, Mitsubishi Mirage and the MINI Cooper. If you've wondered what's going on under the hood this video is for you. I'll talk about exhaust gas scavenging, turbochargers, efficiency and combustion overlap. Statistics powered by ChannelMeter http://channelmete...

What is an inline four cylinder? What are the advantages of an inline engine? What are the advantages of a four cylinder engine? Four cylinder engines are great compact engines, which can fit in many engine bays, are easy to work on, and have balanced primary forces. The secondary forces of I4 engines are not balanced, however, reducing the overall size they can get to without the use of balancing shafts. Also, I4's have a high center of gravity. This video demonstrates the firing order for the 2009+ Yamaha YZF- R1 (and the YZR-M1) This is the only 4 cylinder engine I know of which uses a crossplane crankshaft, in basic terms it works like one bank of a V8 engine. (edit: I think Suzuki's motoGP bike has a crossplane crank too) The firing order shown here is 1 3 2 4. Up in the video is forward on the motorcycle. For the purposes of comparison to the Yamaha 2008 and earlier R1 the firing interval of the engine shown here is: 1 - 270 degrees - 3 - 180 degrees - 4 - 90 degrees - 2 - 180 degrees - where degrees are crank degrees, and a complete engine cycle is 720 degrees. Unfortunately my tacho and program doesn't go higher than 10,000 RPM.

This 6 part series walks through the very detailed procedure for diagnosing and replacing a cracked cylinder head and head gasket on a 1995 Toyota Tacoma with the 3.4 liter 5VZ-FE V6 engine. This engine was widely used by Toyota from the mid 1990's through 2004 in the Tacoma, Tundra, T-100, 4Runner, and Land Cruiser. Therefore, this repair procedure should be common to all of those vehicles with the same engine. Due to the detail presented in this video series, it is also a good reference for doing other repairs such as changing the antifreeze/coolant, timing belt, valve cover gaskets, camshafts, alternator, spark plugs, spark plug wires, ignition coil packs, vacuum hoses, exhaust manifolds, belts, hoses, cooling fan, and various intake gaskets.
