5. Three Eyed Fish
You have seen a three eyed fish on this simpsons before name blinky who lived by the nuclear power plant where Homer Simpson worked. But could one of these mutated creatures actually exist? In 2011, this three eyed fish was caught near a nuclear power plant in Argentina in a local reservoir. A Spanish speaking new website, called infobae.com, claims this resevoir where the hot water from the nuclear facility is pumped, thus leaving radioactive particles in this body of water. Despite the fish not looking exactly the same as blinky, it makes you wonder what other negative ways radiation will impact our ecosystem. Bizarre cases like this rightfully shock residents who live nearby the power plant.
4. Earless Bunny
If you came across a mutated bunny with no ears from radiation birth defects would you keep it as a pet? This little guy, nicknamed the nuclear rabbit, was born near the Fukushima facility and discovered without the trademark bunny ears, making some people wonder what exactly is it? If a bunny doesn’t have it’s ears, does that make it a guinea pig or something? After the blast, Japanese officials ordered that people stay in their homes, don’t turn on the air conditioning and don’t drink the tap water! Maybe this bunny didn’t listen. Experts have been carefully monitoring the area around the site of the meltdown but with this region ever be the same? Some people speculate that it’s possible the rabbit’s mother chewed off its offspring’s ears after birth when it was in distress. What do you believe?
3. Child Baldness
To this day we are still seeing the aftermath of nuclear meltdowns.While most people would expect children to have healthy flowing hair, the Chernobyl incident has created baldness like no one’s ever seen before. Some children in the Ukraine and places near the exclusion zone still suffer from mutations like baldness. Eyebrows and eyelashes completely missing, and small patches of hair grow from this kids head that you see in this photo. This child has her mother apply lotion to her head, hoping some day it’ll grow back. This baldness is unfortunately resistant to treatment and no cure has been found. The USSR wanted absolutely no media coverage of Chernobyl in order to keep the masses of panicking. Medical staffs are still reluctant to blame Chernobyl for the generations of defects in children.
2. Hyperdontia
Also known as Supernumerary Teeth,This rare condition called hyperdontia is an oral condition where people have extra teeth growing out of their mouth. Although scientists haven’t been able to pin down an exact reason for why this happens, many believe it is due to environmental reasons such as radioactivity, genetics and what elements exist in the environment. Having this bizarre condition can result in pain while eating. Also, they’ve been known to fuse with permanent teeth and cause tumors and cysts. Imagine the mutation similar to your wisdom teeth but in a much more extreme situation. The teeth begin to grow after other other permanent teeth have settled in and crowding of the mouth becomes an issue.

Nuclear power plant use energy from radioactive isotopes in order to produce electricity. Like we’ve seen from the 3 eyed fish, they have the capability of releasing radioactive materials into the environment. One of the isotopes released from these power plants is known as I-131 and it can find its way into our water supply, food, and even are milk from livestock that are affected. When the I-131 particles begin to affect the thyroid gland, located in your throat, cancer and horrific mutations become possible. The higher the dose, the more likely the risk of developing cancer. Fish have been found riddled with tumors, like we see in this photo.This wild caught Alaskan Salmon are caught horrifically diseased and internally bleeding. It’s almost like we’re eating Fukushima radiation. It can cause tumors on plants as well as we can seen this photo of a mutated tomato. After seeing all the destruction this power plant has brought, it really makes you consider just wanting to use candles instead of electricity
Most people are familiar with the dangers of radiation. However, there is and has been a lot of misinformation and misunderstanding surrounding its effects. A lot of it stems from radiation's link to nuclear weapons. In fact, even the US government has made some very misleading statements about radiation in the past. For example, after dropping the nuclear bombs on Japan to end World War II, the US claimed that there wouldn't be any fallout radiation or that it wouldn't have any negative effects. Unfortunately, it did. Since then we have learned a lot about radiation and its effects on the human body as you will soon see with these 25 intense facts about radiation.
Because of the misinformation in the past, there are lots of people who subscribe to somewhat pseudoscientific beliefs about radiation. While it is true that it can be harmful. And yes, you should avoid getting x-rayed too much. There is more to the radiation story. For example, only ionizing radiation is dangerous. This is the high intensity radiation like gamma rays and x-rays. We are constantly bombarded by electromagnetic waves that simply pass through us or go around us without any harm. These include radio waves, microwaves, and more. Our entire universe is full of radiation. In fact, your TV even picks up some of the radiation left over form the Big Bang! There is no escaping it. I'm filming a documentary for TV about how Uranium and radioactivity have shaped the modern world. It will be broadcast in mid-2015, details to come. The filming took me to the most radioactive places on Earth (and some places, which surprisingly aren't as radioactive as you'd think). Chernobyl and Fukushima were incredible to see as they present post-apocalyptic landscapes. I also visited nuclear power plants, research reactors, Marie Curie's institute, Einstein's apartment, nuclear medicine areas of hospitals, uranium mines, nuclear bomb sites, and interviewed numerous experts.
Notes about measuring radiation:
Sieverts are a measure of 'effective dose' - that means they measure the biological impact of the energy transferred to tissues from radiation.

DOSES MAY VARY
The level of radiation varies widely around the world depending mainly on altitude and geology (excluding nuclear accidents).
Estimates of particular doses also vary. All numbers reported in this video should be taken as order of magnitude only.
The most contentious claim may be that smokers receive the highest dose of ionizing radiation. This is not a whole body dose, but a dose to the lungs as specified in the video. References are here:

Bizarre cases like this rightfully shock residents who live nearby the power plant.
4. Earless Bunny
If you came across a mutated bunny with no ears from radiation birth defects would you keep it as a pet? This little guy, nicknamed the nuclear rabbit, was born near the Fukushima facility and discovered without the trademark bunny ears, making some people wonder what exactly is it? If a bunny doesn’t have it’s ears, does that make it a guinea pig or something? After the blast, Japanese officials ordered that people stay in their homes, don’t turn on the air conditioning and don’t drink the tap water! Maybe this bunny didn’t listen. Experts have been carefully monitoring the area around the site of the meltdown but with this region ever be the same? Some people speculate that it’s possible the rabbit’s mother chewed off its offspring’s ears after birth when it was in distress. What do you believe?
3. Child Baldness
To this day we are still seeing the aftermath of nuclear meltdowns.While most people would expect children to have healthy flowing hair, the Chernobyl incident has created baldness like no one’s ever seen before. Some children in the Ukraine and places near the exclusion zone still suffer from mutations like baldness. Eyebrows and eyelashes completely missing, and small patches of hair grow from this kids head that you see in this photo. This child has her mother apply lotion to her head, hoping some day it’ll grow back. This baldness is unfortunately resistant to treatment and no cure has been found. The USSR wanted absolutely no media coverage of Chernobyl in order to keep the masses of panicking. Medical staffs are still reluctant to blame Chernobyl for the generations of defects in children.

Also known as Supernumerary Teeth,This rare condition called hyperdontia is an oral condition where people have extra teeth growing out of their mouth. Although scientists haven’t been able to pin down an exact reason for why this happens, many believe it is due to environmental reasons such as radioactivity, genetics and what elements exist in the environment. Having this bizarre condition can result in pain while eating. Also, they’ve been known to fuse with permanent teeth and cause tumors and cysts. Imagine the mutation similar to your wisdom teeth but in a much more extreme situation. The teeth begin to grow after other other permanent teeth have settled in and crowding of the mouth becomes an issue.

Nuclear power plant use energy from radioactive isotopes in order to produce electricity. Like we’ve seen from the 3 eyed fish, they have the capability of releasing radioactive materials into the environment. One of the isotopes released from these power plants is known as I-131 and it can find its way into our water supply, food, and even are milk from livestock that are affected. When the I-131 particles begin to affect the thyroid gland, located in your throat, cancer and horrific mutations become possible. The higher the dose, the more likely the risk of developing cancer. Fish have been found riddled with tumors, like we see in this photo.This wild caught Alaskan Salmon are caught horrifically diseased and internally bleeding. It’s almost like we’re eating Fukushima radiation. It can cause tumors on plants as well as we can seen this photo of a mutated tomato. After seeing all the destruction this power plant has brought, it really makes you consider just wanting to use candles instead of electricity

But that’s not the full story — radiation also applies to rainbows and a doctor examining an X-ray. So what is it, really, and how much should we worry about its effects? Who on Earth is exposed to the most ionizing radiation?

I'm filming a documentary for TV about how Uranium and radioactivity have shaped the modern world. It will be broadcast in mid-2015, details to come. The filming took me to the most radioactive places on Earth (and some places, which surprisingly aren't as radioactive as you'd think). Chernobyl and Fukushima were incredible to see as they present post-apocalyptic landscapes. I also visited nuclear power plants, research reactors, Marie Curie's institute, Einstein's apartment, nuclear medicine areas of hospitals, uranium mines, nuclear bomb sites, and interviewed numerous experts.
Notes about measuring radiation:
Sieverts are a measure of 'effective dose' - that means they measure the biological impact of the energy transferred to tissues from radiation.
Obviously I owe a debt to the fantastic chart made by xkcd, which inspired my visual approach to this video.

DOSES MAY VARY
The level of radiation varies widely around the world depending mainly on altitude and geology (excluding nuclear accidents).
Estimates of particular doses also vary. All numbers reported in this video should be taken as order of magnitude only.
The most contentious claim may be that smokers receive the highest dose of ionizing radiation. This is not a whole body dose, but a dose to the lungs as specified in the video. References are here:

The reader will find here a timely update on new Thz sources and detection schemes as well as concrete applications to the detection of Explosives and Cbrn. Included is a method to identify hidden Rdx-based explosives (pure and plastic ones) in the frequency domain study by Fourier Transformation, which has been complemented by the demonstration of improvement of the quality of the images captured commercially available Thz passive cameras. The presented examples show large potential for the detection of small hidden objects at long distances (6-10 m). Complementing the results in the short-wavelength range, laser spectroscopy with a mid-infrared, room temperature, continuous wave, Dfb laser diode and high performance Dfb Qcl have been demonstrated to offer excellent enabling sensor technologies for environmental monitoring, medical diagnostics, industrial and security applications. From the new source point of view a number of systems have been presented From superconductors to semiconductors, e.g. Detection of Terahertz Waves from Superconducting Bi2sr2cacu2o8+ Intrinsic Josephson Junctions. The quest for a compact room temperature Thz source and the recent advances in high power mid-ir Qcls lead to the development of a semiconductor Thz source based on intracavity difference frequency generation. Furthermore, alternative electrically pumped Thz sources based on the high emission efficiency predicted for polaritonic states in the ultra-strong coupling regime led to the demonstration of electroluminescent devices. Finally, antipolaritons in dispersive media were discussed and different aspects of the interaction of Thz radiation with biomatter were presented.
