SPEAKER 1: Also, keeping your heart healthy. We're going to show you the test being called the new gold standard for screening cholesterol. Offered right here in
North Texas.
Abnormal cholesterol levels are a major risk factor for heart disease as you know. A typical screening though, may not go far enough in determining that risk.
NBC 5's Deborah Ferguson found what some people call the new gold standard.
FERGUSON:
It's the VAP test,
Vertical Auto Profile. It surfaced a decade ago, and is emerging as the preferred choice to check cholesterol levels.
SPEAKER 2: It is the new state of the art test and I think it's just a matter of time before this does replace the standard lipid panel.
FERGUSON: The VAP takes a closer look at cholesterol in the blood than the typical test. It breaks it down in to sub-classes and checks for genetic markers.
Giving doctors a better idea of who is at risk of heart disease.
SPEAKER 2: It will identify problems in 40 - 50% more people than a standard cholesterol test would.
FERGUSON: Nutritionist Sharon Price in
South Lake uses the
VAT test as a guide for clients trying to lower cholesterol levels.
PRICE: To get them down to where their physician will be happy with it, then we do the more detailed testing.
FERGUSON: The test drew a lot of interest at a conference of HR professionals in Fort Worth this week. They came looking for ways to lower health care costs.
SPEAKER 2: A lot of our employees work in a sedentary environment, so they're sitting down all day. Our medical premiums have gone through the roof. That's where we come in. We offer the on-site medical screening for early detection and prevention. We alert people to things that are going on before they become chronic conditions.
FERGUSON: A cholesterol test is a good start. The VAP test may be even better.
SPEAKER 2: This is the new gold standard for cholesterol testing.
FERGUSON: Deborah Ferguson, NBC 5, Fort Worth.
SPEAKER 1: One more
point here. Fasting is not required.
The company that makes the VAP test says it is covered by many large insurers, Medicare, Medicaid and the government's health care plan for active duty members, retirees and their families. The out of pocket price is less than $99.
