Heil dir im Siegerkranz fue desde 1871 hasta 1918 uno de los tres himnos nacionales no oficiales del Imperio alemán, no fue un himno nacional en el sentido como lo entendemos hoy en día, fue más bien un himno imperial.
Por dos razones, esta canción no fue popular en todo el imperio: la primera fue que no fue bien acogida por círculos nacionalistas alemanes ni por los estados del sur de Alemania como Baviera por compartir la melodía con el himno británico God save the Queen y la segunda razón es porque después de la Primera Guerra Mundial el Imperio alemán colapsó. Heil dir im Siegerkranz terminó siendo sustituido por el popular himno Das Lied der Deutschen que al final se convirtió en el himno oficial de la República de Weimar.
Se señala que la melodía tiene su origen en la compuesta para celebrar la curación del rey Luis XIV que sufría de fístulas anales. No está claro si la canción fue adaptada por Händel que la habría vendido a la monarquía hannoveriana como himno real. Previously, it had been the anthem of Prussia, the melody of the hymn derived from the British anthem "God Save the Queen". For these reasons, the song failed to become popular within all of Germany. Not only did it fail to win the support of most German nationalists, it was never recognized by the southern German states, such as Bavaria or Württemberg. After World War I, the German Empire came to an end and "Das Lied der Deutschen" became the national anthem of the Weimar Republic.
"Die Wacht am Rhein" ("The Watch on the Rhine") was a second hymn used during the German Empire that could also be denoted as a national anthem in that period.
Heinrich Harries wrote the lyrics in 1790 in honour of King Christian VII of Denmark, and the line "Heil, Kaiser, dir" originally read "Heil, Christian, dir". In 1793, Harries' text was adapted by Balthasar Gerhard Schumacher for use in Prussia. Schumarcher shortened Harries' text and replaced the word Christian with the word König (king). After the proclamation of the German Empire, the word König was replaced by Kaiser (emperor).

COMPOUND NOUNS:
“Gartenblumen“ = garden flowers which are different from “Feldblumen”= field flowers and flowers from the forest are “Waldblumen”; - Eisblumen are the features of ice in winter on the windowpane and many flower names end in .........blumen. As the last word is feminine the compound word is feminine.
- “der Wagen” means “the car” and “Volk” means the people such as a nation = “der Volkswagen” the car of the people. Since the last word is masculine, the compound noun is masculine. ”Wagen” used to be the wagons and “Wagner” used to be the man who built wagons. Since then the word ”Wagen” has also been used for car and truck, although truck has become ”LKW” = (the letter “W” in the alphabetic pronunciations is “VE”. - The meaning of the letters is: “Lastkraftwagen” = die Last = the load; die Kraft = the strength or force; der Wagen = the vehicle. So the meaning of LKW is: Powerful Vehicle for Loads; in English = “truck”. Only the shortened version is used: LKW (Some compound words are even a little too long for the Germans in their everyday use)
Fahrzeug (“eu” is always pronouced “oy” like in “joy”) is also used to say vehicle and all that moves on wheels. Word by word it means: ”das Zeug” = old expression for “the thing” and “fahren” is a verb meaning “to move around on something” So “das Fahrzeug” really means “the thing to move around on”. Translated word by word some expressions become funny. „Ich fahre“ means: „I drive“ or „I ride a vehicle, a car, a bicycle, a sled“ but not a horse which is:.
„ich kann ein Pferd reiten“ = I can ride a horse: (ein = a) (( The pronunciation of “ei” is always pronounced “ai” like “I ride my bike” in English))
„ich kann ein Motorad fahren“ = I can drive a motorbike.
„ich kann ein LKW fahren“ = I can drive a truck.
„du kannst mit mir fahren“ = you can come with me in the car, (on the motorbike; on the bus) = you can ride with me.
“das Rad” means “the wheel” and is also short for “Fahrad” = bicycle
“ich kann Rad fahren” = I can ride a bike
But: “ich kann ein Fugzeug fliegen” = I can fly a plane (again there is the old expression for “thing” = “Zeug” and the word “Flug” which means “flight”: “Flugzeug” = thing that flies = “flight thing” = airplane). YOU DON’T HAVE TO LEARN THESE WORDS AND SENTENCES NOW, THEY ARE JUST EXAMPLES but if you learn them, - good for you!

"Das Deutschlandlied" German & English Lyrics

Das Deutschlandlied ("The Song of Germany"; German pronunciation: [ˈdɔʏtʃlantˌliːt], also known as "Das Lied der Deutschen" or "The Song of the Germans"), has been used wholly or partially as the national anthem of Germany since 1922. The music was written by Joseph Haydn in 1797 as an anthem for the birthday of the Austrian Emperor Francis II of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1841, the German linguist and poet August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben wrote the lyrics of "Das Lied der Deutschen" to Haydn's melody, lyrics that were considered revolutionary at the time.
The song is as well-known by the opening words and refrain of the first stanza, "Deutschland über alles" (Germany above all), but this has never been its title. The line "Germany, Germany above all" meant that the most important goal of the Vormärz revolutionaries should be a unified Germany overcoming the perceived anti-liberal Kleinstaaterei. Alongside the Flag of Germany it was one of the symbols of the March Revolution of 1848.
In order to endorse its republican and liberal tradition, the song was chosen for national anthem of Germany in 1922, during the Weimar Republic. Out of similar reasons in 1952, West Germany adopted the Deutschlandlied as its official national anthem, with only the third stanza sung on official occasions. Upon German reunification in 1990, the third stanza only was confirmed as the national anthem.

In German, the word Volk may mean folk (simple people), people in the ethnic sense, and nation.
Volk is commonly used as the first, determining part (head) of compound nouns such as Volksentscheid (plebiscite, literally "decision of/by the people") or Völkerbund (League of Nations), or the car manufacturer Volkswagen (literally, "people's car").
19th century and early 20th century
A number of völkisch movements existed prior to World War I. Combining interest in folklore, ecology, occultism and romanticism with ethnic nationalism, their ideologies were a strong influence on the Nazi party, which itself was inspired by Adolf Hitler's membership of the Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (German Workers' Party), even though Hitler in Mein Kampf himself denounced usage of the word völkisch as he considered it too vague as to carry any recognizable meaning due to former over-use. Por dos razones, esta canción no fue popular en todo el imperio: la primera fue que no fue bien acogida por círculos nacionalistas alemanes ni por los estados del sur de Alemania como Baviera por compartir la melodía con el himno británico God save the Queen y la segunda razón es porque después de la Primera Guerra Mundial el Imperio alemán colapsó. Heil dir im Siegerkranz terminó siendo sustituido por el popular himno Das Lied der Deutschen que al final se convirtió en el himno oficial de la República de Weimar.
Se señala que la melodía tiene su origen en la compuesta para celebrar la curación del rey Luis XIV que sufría de fístulas anales. No está claro si la canción fue adaptada por Händel que la habría vendido a la monarquía hannoveriana como himno real. Since then the word ”Wagen” has also been used for car and truck, although truck has become ”LKW” = (the letter “W” in the alphabetic pronunciations is “VE”. - The meaning of the letters is: “Lastkraftwagen” = die Last = the load; die Kraft = the strength or force; der Wagen = the vehicle. So the meaning of LKW is: Powerful Vehicle for Loads; in English = “truck”. Only the shortened version is used: LKW (Some compound words are even a little too long for the Germans in their everyday use)
Fahrzeug (“eu” is always pronouced “oy” like in “joy”) is also used to say vehicle and all that moves on wheels. Word by word it means: ”das Zeug” = old expression for “the thing” and “fahren” is a verb meaning “to move around on something” So “das Fahrzeug” really means “the thing to move around on”. Das Deutschlandlied ("The Song of Germany"; German pronunciation: [ˈdɔʏtʃlantˌliːt], also known as "Das Lied der Deutschen" or "The Song of the Germans"), has been used wholly or partially as the national anthem of Germany since 1922. The music was written by Joseph Haydn in 1797 as an anthem for the birthday of the Austrian Emperor Francis II of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1841, the German linguist and poet August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben wrote the lyrics of "Das Lied der Deutschen" to Haydn's melody, lyrics that were considered revolutionary at the time.
The song is as well-known by the opening words and refrain of the first stanza, "Deutschland über alles" (Germany above all), but this has never been its title. The line "Germany, Germany above all" meant that the most important goal of the Vormärz revolutionaries should be a unified Germany overcoming the perceived anti-liberal Kleinstaaterei. Alongside the Flag of Germany it was one of the symbols of the March Revolution of 1848.
In order to endorse its republican and liberal tradition, the song was chosen for national anthem of Germany in 1922, during the Weimar Republic. Out of similar reasons in 1952, West Germany adopted the Deutschlandlied as its official national anthem, with only the third stanza sung on official occasions. Upon German reunification in 1990, the third stanza only was confirmed as the national anthem.
