Sarah Lois Vaughan (March 27, 1924 – April 3, 1990) was an American jazz singer, described by music critic Scott Yanow as having "one of the most wondrous voices of the 20th century."
Nicknamed "Sassy", "The Divine One" and "Sailor" (for her salty speech), Sarah Vaughan was a Grammy Award winner. The National Endowment for the Arts bestowed upon her its "highest honor in jazz", the NEA Jazz Masters Award, in 1989.
Sarah Vaughan's father, Asbury "Jake" Vaughan, was a carpenter by trade and played guitar and piano. Her mother, Ada Vaughan, was a laundress and sang in the church choir. Jake and Ada Vaughan had migrated to Newark from Virginia during the First World War. Sarah was their only biological child, although in the 1960s they adopted Donna, the child of a woman who traveled on the road with Sarah Vaughan.
The Vaughans lived in a house on Brunswick Street, in Newark, New Jersey, for Sarah's entire childhood. Jake Vaughan was deeply religious and the family was very active in the New Mount Zion Baptist Church at 186 Thomas Street. Sarah began piano lessons at the age of seven, sang in the church choir and occasionally played piano for rehearsals and services.

Lovely rendition from a young Sarah Vaughan.
The Lonely Hours, Sarah Vaughan's contribution to the genre of saloon song LPs, doesn't have a stellar selection of material — although of course nearly anything recorded by one of America's foremost jazz interpreters is worth hearing. Add to that the special treat of Benny Carter — the seminal altoist who'd been contributing charts to the hottest big bands since 1928 — occupying the arranger's chair, and The Lonely Hours becomes a very intriguing proposition. Carter's refined arrangements and ensemble playing don't exactly reinforce the isolation of the title, but Vaughan sounds excellent on "I'll Never Be the Same," "These Foolish Things," and "If I Had You," lightly caressing the notes. For "You're Driving Me Crazy" and "What'll I Do," she cleverly mirrors the comic frustration embodied...

"They All Laughed" is a song composed by George Gershwin, with lyrics by Ira Gershwin, written for the 1937 film Shall We Dance where it was introduced by Ginger Rogers as part of a song and dance routine with Fred Astaire. The lyrics compare those who "laughed at me, wanting you" with those who laughed at some of history's famous scientific and industrial pioneers, asking, "Who's got the last laugh now?" People and advances mentioned are Christopher Columbus's alleged proof the earth is round; Thomas Edison's phonograph; Guglielmo Marconi's wireless telegraphy; the Wright brothers's first flight; the Rockefeller Center; Eli Whitney's cotton gin; Robert Fulton's North River Steamboat; Milton S. Hershey's Hershey bar chocolate; and Henry Ford's "Tin Lizzy" Model T car. Sarah's accompanied ...

[Lyrics Sarah Vaughan - Close to You] Why do birds suddenly appear Every time you are near? Just like me, they long to be Close to you Why do stars fall down from the sky Every time you walk by? Just like me, they long to be Close to you On the day that you were born, the angels got together And decided to create a dream come true So they sprinkled moon dust in your hair of gold And starlight in your eyes of blue That is why all the girls in town Follow you all around Just like me, they long to be Close to you On the day that you were born, the angels got together And decided to create a dream come true So they sprinkled moon dust in your hair of gold And starlight in your eyes of blue That is why all the girls in town Follow you all around Just like me, t...
[Lyrics Sarah Vaughan - Cheek to Cheek] Heaven I'm in heaven And my heart beats so that I can hardly speak And I seem to find the happiness I seek When we're out together dancing cheek to cheek Oh heaven I'm in heaven And the cares that hung around me through the week Seem to vanish like a gambler's lucky streak When we're out together dancing cheek to cheek Oh I'd love to go out fishing In an ocean or a creek But it wouldn't thrill me half as much As dancing cheek to cheek Oh I'd love to climb a mountain And reach the highest peak But it wouldn't thrill me half as much As dancing cheek to cheek Won't you come and dance with me I want my arms about you The charms about you Will carry me through To heaven I'm in heaven The cares that hung around me through ...
[Lyrics Sarah Vaughan - Careless] Love was the thing that you wanted That's why we answered loves call Now that you've got what you wanted You don't seem to want it at all Careless Now that you've got me loving you You're careless Careless in everything you do You break up appointments and think you are smart If you're not careful you'll break my heart Careless Now that my bridges all are burned You're careless Careless in things where I'm concerned Are you just careless, as you seem to be Or do you just care less for me?

Every honeybee Fills with jealousy, When they see you out with me! I don't blame them, goodness knows, Oh, honey! suckle rose!
When you're passin' by, Flowers droop and sigh And I know the reason why, You're my sweety, goodness knows, Oh, honey! suckle rose!
I don't buy sugar, You just have to touch my cup; I don't need sugar, It's sweet enough when you stir it up! When I'm taking sips From your dainty lips, Seems the honey fairly drips, You're confection, goodness knows, Oh, honey! suckle rose.
