The former Calgary Remand Centre inmate who cried rape had injuries to back it up, a doctor testified Monday.

Dr. Kathleen Reynolds said she examined the complainant hours after he said he was allegedly sodomized by his cellmates, shortly after being housed in the city jail.

Reynolds told Crown prosecutor Bev Bauer the man had bruising and tenderness, and, more significantly, a wound consistent with non-consensual sex.

“It was consistent with the patient’s story that he’d been (sexually assaulted),” she said.

Samar Sigar, 20, and Ali Sanghar, 31, each face a charge of sexual assault with a weapon, a pen, in connection with the May 30, 2010 incident.

Reynolds said the fact the complainant also took medications to combat potential sexually transmitted diseases after her examination further bolstered his claim.

Under cross-examination by defence lawyers Allan Fay and Shamsher Kothari, the doctor conceded injuries like those she found could happen during consensual sex.

But she said the nature of them would be inconsistent with that theory. The trial continues Tuesday.
