A glimpse of the city of Edmonton, capital of the Province of Alberta and its surrounding area during the Summer of 2011.
Edmonton is the northernmost North American city with a metropolitan population over 1.3 million.
Typically, summer lasts from late June until early September, and the humidity is seldom uncomfortably high. Winter lasts from November to March, and varies greatly in length and severity. Spring and autumn are both short and highly variable. Its average daily temperatures range from a low of −10.4 °C (13.3 °F) in January to a summer peak of 17.7 °C (63.9 °F) in July.
Edmonton is a cultural, governmental and educational centre. It hosts a year-round slate of festivals, reflected in the nickname "The Festival City."
Edmonton is the major economic centre for northern and central Alberta and a major centre for the oil and gas industry. As of 2014, the estimated value of major projects within the Edmonton Capital Region was $57.8-billion, of which $34.4-billion are within the oil and gas, oil sands and pipeline sectors.
Edmonton's river valley constitutes the longest stretch of connected urban parkland in North America, and Edmonton has the highest amount of parkland per capita of any Canadian city; the river valley is 22 times larger than New York City's Central Park.

These are my carefully selected top 10 travel tips for Calgary & Alberta and includes the best places in Banff and things to do ranging from the most famous hot dog, a helicopter ride with Rockies Heli Tours to the most beautiful place in Canada called Lake Louise.
I decided to visit my friends from Holland who were exploring the Canadian Rockies with their RV, before chasing them down in Banff I treated myself on the most famous hot dog in Canada at Tubby Dog and tried to break the glass floor at the Calgary Tower.

It was such a memorable experience meeting my Dutch friends on the other side of the world so we decided to do it up proper with a family BBQ and a few local brewski's, namely the Powder Hound by The Grizzly Paw which is a local brewery in Canmore, Alberta.
On our first adventure we left in the early morning to take the Banff Gondola to Sulphur Mountain, one of the most mesmerizing views of Banff. Make sure to fill up prior on a classic Canadian breakfast at Tim Hortons, the Canadian way.
The next adventure was a private helicopter ride at Rockies Heli Canada who took us from Kananaskis through the Rocky Mountains. It was a gorgeous clear day which resulted in excellent video footage. We even saw the same river where they shot the movie: The Revenant.
What also amazed us were the buck loads of wildlife passing by the RV throughout our stay at Banff's tunnel mountain campgrounds.
In next week's article I will give you all the details on our adventure at Lake Louise were I completed an 11 hour, 20 kilometer hike, thus best is to relax and relieve your sore muscles at Banff Upper Hot Springs after that trip.
In conclusion we were very fortunate that we had excellent weather with blue skies the entire trip. I highly recommend visiting Calgary, Banff & Lake Louise in the first week of June for the best experience.

Alberta
Alberta (/ælˈbɜːrtə/) is a western province of Canada. With an estimated population of 4,196,457 as of July 1, 2015, it is Canada's fourth-most populous province and the most populous of Canada's three prairie provinces. Alberta and its neighbour Saskatchewan were districts of the Northwest Territories until they were established as provinces on September 1, 1905. The premier has been Rachel Notley since May 2015.
Alberta is bounded by the provinces of British Columbia to the west and Saskatchewan to the east, the Northwest Territories to the north, and the US state of Montana to the south. Alberta is one of three Canadian provinces and territories to border only a single US state and one of only two landlocked provinces. It has a predominantly Humid continental climate, but seasonal temperature average swings are smaller than to areas further east, with winters being warmed by occasional chinook winds bringing sudden warming which moderates average temperatures.
Alberta's capital Edmonton is near the geographic centre of the province and is the primary supply and service hub for Canada's crude oil, oil sands (Athabasca oil sands) and other northern resource industries.

Eric Clapton
Eric Patrick Clapton, CBE (born 30 March 1945), is an English rock and blues guitarist, singer and songwriter. He is the only three-time inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: once as a solo artist and separately as a member of the Yardbirds and Cream. Clapton has been referred to as one of the most important and influential guitarists of all time. Clapton ranked second in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" and fourth in Gibson's "Top 50 Guitarists of All Time". He was also named number five in Time magazine's list of "The 10 Best Electric Guitar Players" in 2009.
In the mid-1960s, Clapton left the Yardbirds to play blues with John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers. Immediately after leaving Mayall, Clapton formed the power trio Cream with drummer Ginger Baker and bassist Jack Bruce, in which Clapton played sustained blues improvisations and "arty, blues-based psychedelic pop". Furthermore, he formed blues rock band Blind Faith with Baker, Steve Winwood, and Ric Grech. For most of the 1970s, Clapton's output bore the influence of the mellow style of JJ Cale and the reggae of Bob Marley. His version of Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff" helped reggae reach a mass market. Two of his most popular recordings were "Layla", recorded with Derek and the Dominos; and Robert Johnson's "Crossroads", recorded with Cream. Following the death of his son Conor in 1991, Clapton's grief was expressed in the song "Tears in Heaven", which featured in his Unplugged album.

Justin Trudeau
Justin Pierre James Trudeau PC MP (born December 25, 1971) is a Canadian politician who is the 23rd and current Prime Minister of Canada, as well as the Leader of the Liberal Party. The second-youngest Canadian prime minister after Joe Clark, he is also, as the eldest son of former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, the first child of a previous prime minister to hold the post.
Trudeau was born in Ottawa and attended Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf. He earned a BA in English literature from McGill University in 1994 and a BEd from the University of British Columbia in 1998. He gained a high public profile in October 2000, when he delivered a eulogy at his father's state funeral. After graduating, he worked as a teacher in Vancouver, British Columbia, then studied engineering, and began a master's degree in Environmental Geography. He used his public profile to advocate for various causes and acted in the 2007 TV miniseries The Great War.
After becoming more involved in politics after his father's death, Trudeau was elected in the 2008 federal election to represent the riding of Papineau in the House of Commons. In 2009, he was appointed the Liberal Party's critic for Youth and Multiculturalism and the following year became critic for Citizenship and Immigration. In 2011, he was appointed as critic for Secondary Education and Youth and Amateur Sport. Trudeau won the leadership of the Liberal Party in April 2013, and went on to lead his party to victory in the 2015 federal election, moving the third-placed Liberals from 36 seats to 184 seats, the largest-ever numerical increase by a party in a Canadian election.

These are my carefully selected top 10 travel tips for Calgary & Alberta and includes the best places in Banff and things to do ranging from the most famous hot dog, a helicopter ride with Rockies Heli Tours to the most beautiful place in Canada called Lake Louise.
I decided to visit my friends from Holland who were exploring the Canadian Rockies with their RV, before chasing them down in Banff I treated myself on the most famous hot dog in Canada at Tubby Dog and tried to break the glass floor at the Calgary Tower.

It was such a memorable experience meeting my Dutch friends on the other side of the world so we decided to do it up proper with a family BBQ and a few local brewski's, namely the Powder Hound by The Grizzly Paw which is a local brewery in Canmore, Alberta.
On our first adventure we left in the early morning to take the Banff Gondola to Sulphur Mountain, one of the most mesmerizing views of Banff. Make sure to fill up prior on a classic Canadian breakfast at Tim Hortons, the Canadian way.
The next adventure was a private helicopter ride at Rockies Heli Canada who took us from Kananaskis through the Rocky Mountains. It was a gorgeous clear day which resulted in excellent video footage. We even saw the same river where they shot the movie: The Revenant.
What also amazed us were the buck loads of wildlife passing by the RV throughout our stay at Banff's tunnel mountain campgrounds.
In next week's article I will give you all the details on our adventure at Lake Louise were I completed an 11 hour, 20 kilometer hike, thus best is to relax and relieve your sore muscles at Banff Upper Hot Springs after that trip.
In conclusion we were very fortunate that we had excellent weather with blue skies the entire trip. I highly recommend visiting Calgary, Banff & Lake Louise in the first week of June for the best experience.

Banff is a town within Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada. It is located in Alberta's Rockies along the Trans-Canada Highway, approximately 126 km (78 mi) west of Calgary and 58 km (36 mi) east of Lake Louise. At an elevation of 1,400 m (4,600 ft) to 1,630 m (5,350 ft), Banff is the community with the second highest elevation in Alberta after Lake Louise.
The Town of Banff was the first municipality to incorporate within a Canadian national park. The town is a member of the Calgary Regional Partnership.
Banff is a resort town and one of Canada's most popular tourist destinations, known for its mountainous surroundings and hot springs. It is a destination for outdoor sports and features extensive hiking, biking, scrambling and skiing areas within the area. Sunshine Village, Ski Norquay and Lake Louise Mountain Resort are the three nearby ski resorts located within the national park.

There are a number of popular mountains located immediately adjacent to the townsite which include Mount Rundle (2,949 m or 9,675 ft); Cascade Mountain (2,998 m or 9,836 ft); and Mount Norquay (2,134 m or 7,001 ft). Mount Norquay has a ski slope as well as mountain biking trails on the Stoney Squaw portion. A popular tourist attraction, the Banff Gondola, is available to ascend Sulphur Mountain (2,281 m or 7,484 ft) where a boardwalk (Banff Skywalk) beginning from the upper terminal takes visitors to Sanson Peak. Sulphur Mountain is also the location of one of Banff's most popular attractions, the Banff Upper Hot Springs.
Lake Minnewanka located 6 minutes north of the townsite is a very popular day use area with a variety of activities. Mountain biking, hiking and fishing are all activities allowed in this part of the park. There is a very popular Lake Cruise and motor boat rentals and a small food concession available at the marina.
Tunnel Mountain (formerly known as Sleeping Buffalo Mountain) (1,690 m or 5,545 ft) is situated within the townsite and is very popular for quick hikes; one can reach the summit in less than half an hour. It was named Tunnel Mountain because surveyors initially wanted to make a tunnel for the Canadian Pacific Railway right through the mountain, instead of following the Bow River Valley.
Banff is home to the well-known Banff World Television Festival, Banff Mountain Film Festival, Rocky Mountain Music Festival and Bike Fest. The city is also the starting point of the 4,417 km (2,745 mi) Great Divide Mountain Bike Route, which terminates at Antelope Wells, New Mexico in the United States.

This battle was brewing all season long, as Alberta swept the season series with two wins in Canada West league play, while Trinity Western beat out the Golden Bears when it counted in postseason play. The Spartans up-ended Alberta in the Canada West semifinal just a week ago and knocked them into the bronze medal game, with set scores of 18-25, 25-20, 25-19, 20-25 and 15-11.
Trinity Western's Black Scheerhorn of Belleville, Ont., was masterful on Friday, claiming player of the game honours for the Spartans tallying 25 kills on 52 attacks to go along with two aces and a game high 30 points.
"It feels pretty amazing," said Scheerhorn following play. "We knew this was a great Alberta team and that they were going to have a fire in their bellies, because we beat them in the Canada West semifinal, and it was going to be a battle tonight."
"We kept our heads on straight and knew that if we played our block defence, we'd be able to get out of tough situations. Patience was the key. We were patient with the ball, and it helped us in the end."
Ryan Sclater was the other Spartan to register double digts in points, recording 21 along with 18 kills. Spartans setter Adam Schriemer of Winnipeg quarterbacked the offence with 50 assists.
Alberta was handicapped early in the first set with the loss of Taylor Arnett of Calgary, who suffered a leg injury in the first set. Earlier this week, Arnett was named as a middle to the CIS All-Canadian second team.
Trinity Western's Head Coach Ben Josephson, who is in his ninth season with the Spartans knew that was a big loss for Alberta given the teams history against each other.
"It's disappointing when a great player goes down. You never want to play someone undermanned," said Josephson. "They paid a big price to get into this match, and it's tough that Taylor had to go down. We were playing with one of our middles pretty sick, and that's just the way it is at this time of the year.
Golden Bears setter Brett Walsh of Calgary recorded a tournament high 60 assists in the five set slug fest, recording 13 digs along with seven points in the loss for Alberta.
"It really was a great match, and a lot of fun to play," said Walsh, the 2016 CIS Player of the Year. "It's [too bad] to be on the losing end of it for sure. But that's what we play for, we want these competitive situations at this time of the year. We put ourselves in the right position, we just came up short today."
Ryley Barnes of St. Paul, Alta., had 24 kills for the Golden Bears while Ryan Kickifor of Sherwood Park. Alta., had 23, wih both players tallying 25 points for the team lead.
The heavyweight battle was back and forth with neither team gaining too much momenium throughout. The biggest lead was in the first set with Alberta holding a seven-point advantage to secure a 1-0 lead. Trinity Western roared right back, claiming the next two sets before Alberta rebounded in the fourth to set up the deciding frame.
In the fifth set, the two teams traded leads six times before the Spartans were able to gain the final advantage at 10-9. From there, Scheerhoorn and Sclater registered two kills and the Spartans forced Alberta to make a handful of mental errors to give the game to Trinity Western.

00:32 In Edmonton, the capital of Alberta, the journey begins. The program includes the Art Gallery of Edmonton and a walk through the West Edmonton Mall, which has long been the largest mall in the world.
03:02 The next day we drive in the Elk Island National Parc, "wild nature with wild animals" where you can them walking around freely. Here in Elk Island National Parc is the recovery herd for Canada. They are sent to recovery projects in canada, in the US and to Russia. Approximately 800 wood bisons and 700 plain bisons live here.
06:43 We enjoy a relaxing train trip with the comfortable Via Rail Canada to Jasper, a typical Canadian small town. In the evening we organize a night tour is through an Ice Canyon in Jasper National Park. Incredible icefalls where you often find iceclimbers. An amazing dream landscape. In summer, you cannot go down to the bottom, however, since then there are big raging rivers.
We also try ice-skating in the dark, which is quite normal in Canada. And our hockey, the Canadians can only smile about our efforts...
16:14 On the way to Lake Louise, the Canadian Mecca for skiers, we experience Canada: on the Columbia Icefielf the Columbia Icefield we take a break, the next stop is more enforced: the mile-long freight train that makes us wait almost an hour at the railroad crossing. Then we we are caught in a real blizzard; Mountain goat standing in the middle of the road.
17:56 Visit to the Deer Lodge, one of the oldest hotels in the city. Lake Louise is the venue for the Ski World Cup downhill and giant slalom, the season starts in the beginning of November and ends in the middle of May, because then people go playing golf.
21:07 In a sleigh we visit the famous Fairmont Chateau by the Victoria glacier. Here they are holding the international ice sculpture festival at the moment - the Ice Magic Festival.
