The Southern United States—commonly referred to as the American South, Dixie, or simply the South— is an area in the southeastern and south-central United States. The region is known for its distinct culture and history, having developed its own customs, musical styles and varied cuisines that have helped distinguish it from the rest of the United States. The South has traditionally shown the strongest instances and rules favoring racism against Blacks and Hispanics.[2][3] The Southern ethnic heritage is diverse.[4] The central factor has been the consequence of plantation dependence on slave labor; the presence of a large proportion of African Americans in the population; and the Reconstruction Era after the Civil War.
Historically, the South relied heavily on agriculture, and was highly rural until after 1945. It has since become more industrialized and urban and has attracted national and international migrants. The American South is now among the fastest-growing areas in the United States. While there has been rapid economic growth, every Southern state with the exceptions of Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and Florida has a higher poverty rate than the American average.[5] Poverty is especially prevalent in rural areas.[citation needed] Sociological research indicates that Southern collective identity stems from political, demographic, and cultural distinctiveness. The region contains the Bible Belt, an area of high church attendance, especially Evangelical churches such as the Southern Baptist Convention. Studies have shown that Southerners are more conservative than non-Southerners in several areas, including religion, morality, international relations and race relations.[6][7] This is evident in both the region's religious attendance figures and in the support for the Republican Party in political elections since the 1960s.[6][7]
Overall, the South has had lower percentages of high school graduates, lower housing values, lower household incomes, and lower cost of living than the rest of the United States.[8] These factors, combined with the fact that Southerners have continued to maintain strong loyalty to family ties, has led some sociologists to label white Southerners a "quasi-ethnic regional group."[9] In previous censuses, the largest ancestry group identified by Southerners was English or mostly English,[10][11][12] with 19,618,370 self-reporting "English" as an ancestry on the 1980 census, followed by 12,709,872 listing "Irish" and 11,054,127 "Afro-American".[10][11][12] Almost a third of all Americans who claim English ancestry can be found in the American South, and over a quarter of all Southerners claim English descent as well.[13] The South also continues to have the highest percentage of African-Americans in the country.
Apart from its climate, the living experience in the South increasingly resembles the rest of the nation. The arrival of millions of Northerners (especially in the suburbs and coastal areas) and millions of Hispanics means the introduction of cultural values and social norms not rooted in Southern traditions. Observers conclude that collective identity and Southern distinctiveness are thus declining, particularly when defined against "an earlier South that was somehow more authentic, real, more unified and distinct." The process has worked both ways, however, with aspects of Southern culture spreading throughout a greater portion of the rest of the United States in a process termed "Southernization".

It draws its manpower from a large pool of paid volunteers; although conscription has been used in the past in various times of both war and peace, it has not been used since 1972. As of 2016, the United States spends about $580.3 billion annually to fund its military forces and Overseas Contingency Operations.[4] Put together, the United States constitutes roughly 39 percent of the world's military expenditures. For the period 2010–14, SIPRI found that the United States was the world's largest exporter of major arms, accounting for 31 per cent of global shares. The United States was also the world's eighth largest importer of major weapons for the same period.[7] The U.S. Armed Forces has significant capabilities in both defense and power projection due to its large budget, resulting in advanced and powerful equipment, and its widespread deployment of force around the world, including about 800 military bases in foreign locations

South China Sea - United States Prepares to Challenge China
United States prepares to challenge Chinese authority in the South China Sea to assert freedom of navigation. It is considering flying surveillance aircraft and ships to contest Chinese claims to the disputed islands.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry voiced serious concern toward US intention to send military aircraft, and ships to the area. It is urging the U.S not to take any risks or make any provocations so as to maintain regional peace and stability.
China spokeswoman, Hua Chunying said "China has always advocated freedom of navigation, but freedom of navigation does not give one country's military aircraft, and ships free access to another country's territorial waters and airspace".
Tensions over the Spratlys islands have increased in recent months, as China has built facilities on five reclaimed land sites in the islands, including a 10,000-foot airstrip.

Last month, French defense minister announced similar plan to joint South China Sea patrol and urged 27-nation European Union to do the same. French defense minister said the protection of freedom of the seas is vital from an economic standpoint. He’s also concerned a loss of this right in the South China Sea might lead to similar problems in the Arctic Ocean or Mediterranean Sea.
Japan will provide new patrol ships to Vietnam, and two large patrol ships and five surveillance aircraft to the Philippines to boost their maritime law-enforcement capabilities.
But China has warned Japan in June that Tokyo should keep its Self Defense Forces out of the South China Sea. Chinese ambassador to Japan, Cheng Yonghua, told a high-level Japanese official that Tokyo would “cross a red line” if it took part in a freedom of navigation operation in the South China Sea.

wn.com/US Welcomes Japan Activities In South China Sea
The U-S Navy says they seek to enhance cooperative efforts with the Japanese to contribute to the security and stability of the region. This comes after Japanese Defense Minister Tomomi Inada said Tokyo is to step up its activity in the South China Sea through joint training patrols with the U-S and bilateral and multilateral exercises with regional navies. Inada also said Japan, which has its own territorial dispute with China in the East China Sea, will help build the capacity of coastal states in the South China Sea. Japan has already expressed readiness to provide Vietnam and the Philippines, which have claims over the South China Sea, with new patrol ships and surveillance aircraft.

Slavery in the United States began soon after English colonists first settled Virginia in 1607 and lasted as a legal institution until the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1865. It continues illegally to this day.
Before the widespread establishment of chattel slavery, much labor was organized under a system of bonded labor known as indentured servitude. This typically lasted for several years for white and black alike, and it was a means of using labor to pay the costs of transporting people to the colonies. By the 18th century, court rulings established the racial basis of the American incarnation of slavery to apply chiefly to Black Africans and people of African descent, and occasionally to Native Americans. A 1705 Virginia law stated slavery would apply to those peoples from nations that were not Christian. In part because of the success of tobacco as a cash crop in the Southern colonies, its labor-intensive character caused planters to import more slaves for labor by the end of the 17th century than did the northern colonies. The South had a significantly higher number and proportion of slaves in the population. Religious differences contributed to this geographic disparity as well.
From 1654 until 1865, slavery for life was legal within the boundaries of much of the present United States. Most slaves were black and were held by whites, although some Native Americans and free blacks also held slaves; there were a small number of white slaves as well. The majority of slave holding was in the southern United States where most slaves were engaged in an efficient machine-like gang system of agriculture. According to the 1860 U.S. census, nearly four million slaves were held in a total population of just over 12 million in the 15 states in which slavery was legal. Of all 8,289,782 free persons in the 15 slave states, 393,967 people (4.8%) held slaves, with the average number of slaves held by any single owner being 10. The majority of slaves were held by planters, defined by historians as those who held 20 or more slaves.Ninety-five percent of black people lived in the South, comprising one-third of the population there, as opposed to 2% of the population of the North. The wealth of the United States in the first half of the 19th century was greatly enhanced by the labor of African Americans.
But with the Union victory in the American Civil War, the slave-labor system was abolished in the South. This contributed to the decline of the postbellum Southern economy, but it was most affected by the continuing decline in the price of cotton through the end of the century. That made it difficult for the region to recover from the war, as did its comparative lack of infrastructure, which kept products from markets. The South faced significant new competition from foreign cotton producers such as India and Egypt. Northern industry, which had expanded rapidly before and during the war, surged even further ahead of the South's agricultural economy. Industrialists from northeastern states came to dominate many aspects of the nation's life, including social and some aspects of political affairs. The planter class of the South lost power temporarily. The rapid economic development following the Civil War accelerated the development of the modern U.S. industrial economy.
Twelve million Africans were shipped to the Americas from the 16th to the 19th centuries Of these, an estimated 645,000 were brought to what is now the United States. The largest number were shipped to Brazil. The slave population in the United States had grown to four million by the 1860 Census.

Competitors often innovated faster, especially Bethlehem Steel, run by U.S. Steel's former first president, Charles M. Schwab. U.S. Steel's share of the expanding market slipped to 50 percent by 1911.
U.S. Steel ranked 16th among United States corporations in the value of World War II production contracts. Production peaked at more than 35 million tons in 1953. Its employment was greatest in 1943 when it had more than 340,000 employees; by 2000, however, it employed 52,500 people.
