Today, Mary Miles Minter is mostly known for her involvement in the famous William Desmond Taylor murder case. At the time when this film `The Eyes of Julia Deep' (1918) was filmed, this was all ahead of her. She was a bright up-and-coming star.
When Mary Pickford departed Paramount Studios to form United Artists with Charlie Chaplin and Douglas Fairbanks, it was this second Mary who the studio chose to be Pickford's successor, reputedly at Pickford's own suggestion.
She never attained the same level of fame as her successor, and retired from filmmaking when her Paramount contract expired in 1923.

Mary Miles Minter (April 25, 1902 -- August 4, 1984) was an American actress. She appeared in 54 silent era motion pictures from 1912 to 1923.
In 1922, Minter was involved in scandal surrounding the murder of director William Desmond Taylor, whom she professed her love for. Although gossip implicated her mother, former actress Charlotte Shelby, as the murderer, Minter's reputation as a demure young lady was tarnished. Taylor's murder remains a cold case.
At the age of five, she accompanied her sister, Margaret, on an audition because no babysitter was available. She was noticed by the director and given her first part. She began her stage career and was frequently employed afterward, widely noted for both her talent and visual appeal. To avoid child labor laws while the 10-year-old was appearing in a play in Chicago, in 1912, Charlotte Shelby obtained the birth certification of her elder sister's deceased daughter from Louisiana, and Juliet became Mary Miles Minter.
In her screen debut, in which she was billed as Juliet Shelby, she appeared in the 1-reel drama short The Nurse (1912). From there her new stage name was applied and Minter was starred in the role as Viola Drayton, the fairy, in the 5-reel feature length drama The Fairy and the Waif (1915).
Minter's career steadily grew after that. She specialized in playing demure young women. With her photogenic features, blue eyes and curly blonde hair, she emulated and later rivaled Mary Pickford.
Her first movie for director William Desmond Taylor was Anne of Green Gables (1919). It was well received, and Taylor actively promoted Minter as a star. According to Minter, a romantic relationship developed between them. However, Minter (who had grown up fatherless) said Taylor had reservations from the outset and later curtailed the romance, citing the 30-year difference in their ages. Other people who knew Taylor and Minter said he never reciprocated her feelings.
Minter, whose mother was a shrewd businesswoman and invested her daughter's money wisely, gave up her movie career in 1923.

Mary Miles Minter (April 1, 1902 – August 4, 1984) was an American film actress of the silent film era.
Born Juliet Reilly in Shreveport, Louisiana, Minter was the younger daughter of Lilla Pearl Reilly (née Miles and later known as Broadway actress Charlotte Shelby) and her husband, Joseph Homer Reilly. At the age of five, she accompanied older sister Margaret on an audition only because no baby sitter was available, was noticed by the director and given her first part. After this she was frequently employed, widely noted for both her talent and visual appeal. In 1912, to avoid child labour laws in Chicago while her 10 year-old daughter was appearing in a play, Shelby obtained the birth certificate of a cousin and changed Juliet's name to Mary Miles Minter. She made her first feature film in 1915 at the age of 13, after which her career steadily grew.
Minter specialised in playing demure young women. With her photogenic "registration[clarification needed]", even features, "periwinkle blue eyes" and curly hair, she emulated and later rivaled Mary Pickford.

Rudolph Valentino (May 6, 1895 – August 23, 1926) was an Italian actor, known simply as "Valentino" and also an early pop icon. A sex symbol of the 1920s, Valentino was known as the "Latin Lover". He starred in several well-known silent films including The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, The Sheik, Blood and Sand, The Eagle and Son of the Sheik. He had applied for American citizenship shortly before his death.
His sudden death at age 31 caused mass hysteria among his female fans, further propelling him into icon status. Though his films are not as well known today, his name is still widely known.
Valentino was born Rodolfo Alfonso Raffaello Pierre Filibert Guglielmi di Valentina D'Antonguolla in Castellaneta, Puglia, Kingdom of Italy. His mother, Marie Berta Gabrielle (née Barbin; 1856–1919), was French, born in Lure in Lorraine. His father, Giovanni Antonio Giuseppe Fedele Guglielmi di Valentina D'Antonguolla, was Italian; he was a veterinarian who died of malaria when Valentino was 11. He had an older brother, Alberto (1892–1981), a younger sister, Maria, and an older sister Beatrice who died in infancy.

Today, Mary Miles Minter is mostly known for her involvement in the famous William Desmond Taylor murder case. At the time when this film `The Eyes of Julia Deep' (1918) was filmed, this was all ahead of her. She was a bright up-and-coming star.
When Mary Pickford departed Paramount Studios to form United Artists with Charlie Chaplin and Douglas Fairbanks, it was this second Mary who the studio chose to be Pickford's successor, reputedly at Pickford's own suggestion.
She never attained the same level of fame as her successor, and retired from filmmaking when her Paramount contract expired in 1923.

In 1922, Minter was involved in scandal surrounding the murder of director William Desmond Taylor, whom she professed her love for. At the age of five, she accompanied her sister, Margaret, on an audition because no babysitter was available. She was noticed by the director and given her first part. In her screen debut, in which she was billed as Juliet Shelby, she appeared in the 1-reel drama short The Nurse (1912). From there her new stage name was applied and Minter was starred in the role as Viola Drayton, the fairy, in the 5-reel feature length drama The Fairy and the Waif (1915).
Minter's career steadily grew after that. She specialized in playing demure young women. With her photogenic features, blue eyes and curly blonde hair, she emulated and later rivaled Mary Pickford.
Her first movie for director William Desmond Taylor was Anne of Green Gables (1919). It was well received, and Taylor actively promoted Minter as a star. According to Minter, a romantic relationship developed between them. However, Minter (who had grown up fatherless) said Taylor had reservations from the outset and later curtailed the romance, citing the 30-year difference in their ages. Other people who knew Taylor and Minter said he never reciprocated her feelings.
Minter, whose mother was a shrewd businesswoman and invested her daughter's money wisely, gave up her movie career in 1923.

Best remembered for her role as Brigid O'Shaughnessy in The Maltese Falcon, Astor began her long motion picture career as a teenager in the silent movies of the early 1920s. She eventually transitioned to talkies, but nearly saw her career destroyed due to public scandal in the mid-1930s. She was sued for support by her parents and was later branded an adulterous wife by her ex-husband in a custody fight over her daughter. Overcoming these stumbling blocks in her private life, Astor went on to greater success on screen, eventually winning an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in The Great Lie. She was a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer contract player through most of the 1940s and continued to work in film, on television, and on stage until her retirement in 1964. Astor was the author of five novels. Her autobiography was a bestseller, as was her later book, A Life on Film, which was specifically about her career. Director Lindsay Anderson wrote of her in 1990: "that when two or three who love the cinema are gathered together, the name of Mary Astor always comes up, and everybody agrees that she was an actress of special attraction, whose qualities of depth and reality always seemed to illuminate the parts she played."
