A strict nature reserve (IUCN category Ia) or wilderness area (IUCN category Ib), is the highest category of protected area recognised by the World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA), a body which is part of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). These category I areas are the most stringently protected natural landscapes.
Strict nature reserves and wilderness areas are protected areas that are created and managed mainly for the purposes of research or for the protection of large, unspoiled areas of wilderness. Their primary purpose is the preservation of biodiversity and as essential reference areas for scientific work and environmental monitoring.
This is a relatively short nature documentary featuring some wilderness areas in the Balkans (i.e. southeast Europe). Both “regular” and more “exotic” animals are shown. We get to meet pelicans in the Danube delta, cormorants at Skadar Lake, wild boars trying to stay clear of land mines in Croatia, a displaced flock of rosy starlings from Asia, the rare European mink, and ravens mobbing large vultures and wolves. A few human inhabitants of the various regions have also been included, perhaps for local color. I'm not sure if “Wild Balkans” gives a true account of these regions, or if it’s a romanticized one – the DVD is promoted by references to LOTR. The show is rather slow-paced, but the quality of the footage is incredibly good. In the end I give it three stars, but perhaps it deserves m...

New maps show "alarming losses" of pristine landscapes, particularly in South America and Africa, according to World Conservation Society scientists. They argue in Current Biology that wild areas are ignored in international conservation agreements, despite their ecological and cultural value. About 20% of the world's land area is classed as wilderness. By this, scientists mean landscapes free of large-scale human disturbances such as housing, development and industry. The majority...

Cummins Creek Wilderness is a 9,300-acre wilderness area in the Siuslaw National Forest along the Oregon Coast. It is one of three wilderness areas created in the Siuslaw in 1984, along with Rock Creek and Drift Creek. The Cummins Creek Wilderness features the only old growth Sitka spruce forest in the Oregon Wilderness system. Some of these trees have a diameter of up to nine feet. Large old growth Douglas fir also abounds. Cummins and Bob Creeks are lined with red alder and maple, and understory vegetation consists of rhododendron, salal, sword fern, salmon berry, and elderberry. Wildlife include elk, black tail deer, and black bear. Salmon, steelhead, and cutthroat trout are in both Cummins Creek and Bob Creek.

Oregon Senate District 28 candidate Todd Kepple shares his views on the value of wilderness areas, and the importance of the principle of "multiple use" of other lands.
This is an excerpt pulled from my longer video and hike in the Middle Prong Wilderness of Pisgah National Forest, NC. The first segment in the video is where the Haywood Gap Trail crosses Middle Prong West Fork Pigeon River below an unnamed 15-foot waterfall on Middle Prong. The latter segments involve a seriously dangerous bushwhack (not depicted here) to the base of the Middle Prong Gorge. I ended up below a smaller 10-foot waterfall and above a nice cascade. I had to climb up the left side of this small falls to get to the base of Middle Prong Falls. I recently read about this in Kevin Adams' new book. It is a magnificent powerful 35-foot drop in a small, lush canyon. A waterfall that few ever get to see. If you are looking to explore the areas in my video, this depicts those settin...
The US has some gorgeous designated wilderness areas. Each season brings spectacular changes in nature and a wilderness area is ideal for outdoor recreation whether it’s wildlife-spotting, climbing, hiking, canoeing or winter sports. Of course, if you just want to admire a splendiferous view or commune with nature, take a few photos or maybe find a little personal Zen, that’s ok too. In August 2016 our annual western backpacking trip took my son Christian and I, and our two labs Bailey and Jaden, to the Holy Cross Wilderness near Vail, Colorado. I've wanted to do a hike in this area since I started backpacking in 2010, but the lack of any multi-day 'true' loop hikes had always discouraged me. With a little research I found the 30-mile 4-day 'almost' loop hike that we ended up doing - the start and end trailheads (started at Half Moon Trailhead and ended at Cross Creek trailhead) were separated by 7 miles of rough forest road, but it ended up working out well. As you'll see in the video there was more 'drama' than usual on this trip. I left my camera bags at home and had to improvise, I left the map in the car during the first-day trailhead adventures, our mapping GPS ...

For this backpacking adventure, we'll be exploring the Wild River Wilderness, a remote area of New Hampshire's White Mountains for two days, covering 36 miles, countless rain storms, and a few injuries for good measure. ;) The Wild River Wilderness is located in the North Eastern corner of the White Mountain National Forest, very close to the Maine state line. Designated by congress as a federal wilderness area in 2006, this is the newest wilderness area in the WMNF. Now you may think of anything outdoors as "wilderness", but Federal Wilderness areas are designated areas of land that prohibit just about any form of man-made development. This would include motorized access, structures, facilities, and permanent shelters. Trail maintenance is allowed, but only with hand tools. Sounds...
Want to hike with less crowds during peak season? For this adventure, we visit the Lye Brook Wilderness in Southern Vermont's Green Mountain National Forest. This was actually a loop hike that I managed to scrap together at the last minute, due to some bad weather intervening with my plans to finally hike Virginia's Shenandoah National Park. Luckily, Vermont had 2 days of beautiful sunny weather, so into the hatchback we went, for another 2 day adventure. The Green Mountain National Forest is a 399,151 acre swath of land consisting of 8 Federal Wilderness Areas. These are areas with special protections to ensure a minimal impact from us pesky humans, including restrictions on trail maintenance. This tends to make for more rugged trails, which from my perspective, means for interesti...
