Metallica was formed in 1981 when vocalist/guitarist James Hetfield responded to an advertisement posted by drummer Lars Ulrich in a local newspaper. The band's current line-up comprises founding members Hetfield and Ulrich, longtime lead guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Robert Trujillo. Lead guitarist Dave Mustaine and bassists Ron McGovney, Cliff Burton and Jason Newsted are former members of the band. Metallica collaborated over a long period with producer Bob Rock, who produced all of the band's albums from 1990 to 2003 and served as a temporary bassist between the departure of Newsted and the hiring of Trujillo.

The song "Astronomy" was originally released by the band Blue Öyster Cult in 1974 on the album "Secret Treaties". Blue Öyster Cult, the song writer of "Astronomy" mainly wrote savy garage noir songs about biker wars and adolescent meltdown. James: "That song has always been pretty epic to me. Listening to the song, we thought whether we should even fuck with it because it's so sacred. We tried it and it came out pretty well." Jason chose a song of the "Blue Öyster Cult" because in his teenage concert-going days he saw that band more times than any other band "because they toured more than any other band". All rights goes to Metallica, Blue Öyster Cult, Warner Bros., Elektra, Vertigo, Megaforce & Sony (Japan)

''Tuesday's Gone'' was originally released by Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1973 on the "Pronounced Leh-nerd Skin-nerd" album. James about the record: "This is the only one with guests. It was live from the radio show we did last year (1997) and so there's all these people singing out of key. We gave Randy (Staub) the tapes of it and said 'here, mix this' and he was like 'holy shit'. There's 20 guys on it, and it had a great vibe." James about the song: "I always loved that one. It's a movin'-on song: you're splitting, you're leaving your woman at home. You're off doing your own thing. It really fits the road." All rights goes to Metallica, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Warner Bros., Elektra, Vertigo, Megaforce & Sony (Japan)
The song "Sabbra Cadabra" was originally released by Black Sabbath in December 1973 on the album "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath". It was Lars' recommendation after the band unanimously decided to not cover any insanely popular Sabbath songs like: "War Pigs" or "Paranoid". Lars: "I remember on the Load tour, talking with Kirk about this project one night in Frankfurt, staying up and watching the sun rise, and saying,'If we do any Sabbath, it's got to be 'Sabbra Cadabra'. There's actually a bit of that fill in '2x4'" Lars also asserts: "Black Sabbath were not a direct influence on our music they had been going for too long. But they were a big influence on the four of us as we were growing up." James: "You sit and listen to the Sabbath stuff and think 'wow that's great' and then you go to ...
''Turn The Page'' was originally released by Bob Seger in 1973 on the "Back in '72" album. It was the first single release of the "Garage Inc." album. Its video got a lot of attention because its story is about a prostitute. ''Turn The Page'' is about the other side of a band's life on tour. The deafening silence after the audience leaves, the loneliness of hotel rooms and the stares in restaurants. About three years before Metallica recorded "Garage Inc." Lars listened to Bob Seger's "Turn the Page" whilst he drove across the Golden Gate Bridge he was impressed how good Seger described the stupefying stuff the fans never see when a band is touring. Lars: "That song has James Hetfield written all over it." James: "I heard a song on the radio singing about the road life, a kind...
