A steam engine is a heat engine that performs mechanical work using steam as its working fluid.
Steam engines are external combustion engines, where the working fluid is separate from the combustion products. Non-combustion heat sources such as solar power, nuclear power or geothermal energy may be used. The ideal thermodynamic cycle used to analyze this process is called the Rankine cycle. In the cycle, water is heated and transforms into steam within a boiler operating at a high pressure. When expanded through pistons or turbines, mechanical work is done. The reduced-pressure steam is then condensed and pumped back into the boiler.
In general usage, the term steam engine can refer to either the integrated steam plants (including boilers etc.) such as railway steam locomotives and portable engines, or may refer to the piston or turbine machinery alone, as in the beam engine and stationary steam engine. Specialized devices such as steam hammers and steam pile drivers are dependent on the steam pressure supplied from a separate boiler.
James Douglas Muir "Jay" Leno (/ˈlɛnoʊ/; born April 28, 1950) is an American comedian, actor, writer, producer, voice actor, and television host. Beginning in September 2009, Leno started a primetime talk show, titled The Jay Leno Show, which aired weeknights at 10:00 p.m. ET, also on NBC.
After The Jay Leno Show was canceled in January 2010 amid a host controversy, Leno returned to host The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on March 1, 2010. He hosted his last episode of The Tonight Show on February 6, 2014. That year, he was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame.
Leno was born in New Rochelle, New York. His homemaker mother, Catherine (née Muir; 1911–1993), was born in Greenock, Scotland, and came to the United States at age 11. Highlights: * The crankshaft is glass. The piston is glass. The counterweight that makes the wheel spin evenly is glass. Imagine that everything is made out of glass. * There are no sealants used. All is accomplished by a perfectly snug fit. The gap between the piston and its compartment is so small, that the water that condensates from the steam seals it shut! * Notice the elaborate excessive steam exhaust system next to the piston. * The piston is the most arduous part to make due to to extreme level of precision needed. Its parts have to be so accurate that no machinery is of use here. The piston and its cylinder must be hand sanded to perfection, and they are very likely to crack in the process! On average, three out of four crack. This Model of Stephenson's Steam Engi...

This is how I converted an old air compressor into a steam or compressed air piston engine. I show how to build cheap replaceable valves, and how the rods were built and timing was achieved. This can now be used as a generator for home power production. For the video I test the engine with compressed air, later it will be run on steam.
The Kempton Park Steam Engines (also known as the Kempton Great Engines) are two large triple-expansion steam engines, dating from 1926--1929, at the Kempton Park waterworks, Middlesex, London. The were manufactured by Worthington-Simpson. Each engine is of a similar size to that used in RMS Titanic and rated at about 1008 hp. They each pumped 19 million gallons of water a day, to supply north London with drinking water taken from the River Thames. These are the largest triple expansion engines still running in the world! They were the last working survivors when they were finally retired from service in 1980. Here is one of the engineers engaging the barring engine, into the fly wheel in order to line the pistons of the main engine in the correct position for the admission of steam, to st...
I will show you awesome compilation of old abandoned steam engine trains and locomotives in USA, abandoned on old train trucks. Many of them are dying in the woods. You will see amazing train pictures.

HD 720p The Big Red Corliss Steam Engine is one of the the stars of London's Science Museum. This cross compound mill engine, equipped with Corliss valve gear both on the high and low pressure side, drove up to 1700 power looms at the Finchley View Mill, Harle Syke near Burnley in Lancashire from 1903 to 1970. The looms got their power by a complicated line shafting system in each working hall of the mill. The engine, System Taylor, was built for the mill in 1903 by Burnley Ironworks. The restoration and installation in the Science Museum was done in 1979 by Riley & Son Ltd, Lancashire (see the plaque in my video at 5:32). The engine does 700 hp at a high-steam pressure of 160 psi (11 bar). The expanded steam of the high pressure cylinder is used in the low pressure cylinder and afterward...

All aboard! Come along for a look at several steam trains running in the western United States! Steam Trains Galore is a 28 minute long video that features numerous shots of all sorts of different steam trains. You will see everything from small park trains to the big steam trains that make occasional runs on the main line today. This video is not narrated and there are no captions on any of the video clips, so if there are any questions about where some of these videos were filmed, I'd be happy to answer them. I'm trying to increase the variety of videos I have on my page, so this video is geared towards a different (younger) audience. This is to get a better sense as to what types of videos are the most popular. If this is well received, I will post more like it in the future. So, that s...

Steam trains at speed, you gotta love 'em. Whether they be roaring through a busy station, or pounding through the open countryside. Number 12 in a series of videos I created to show what a small 1926 steam powered "job" machine shop would have been like. Calvin Coolidge was president, most non-city folks had no electricity, Air mail routes were being set up and flown with open cockpit bi-planes, and Ford had introduced it's improved Model "T". Discussion about steam power, vintage machine shop, and line shaft systems always welcome here. Please check my "g+" page from the channel header, to see what's going on in the shop. This time the valve chest is made and assembled with the cylinder. The design is intended as a bridge between toy steam and a full scale model. It could be a beginners model or a quick build for more experienced builders. Castings and plans are available for this engine. Mr. Engineer,
Slow the engine down some more,
You're moving just a little too fast,
I've got my foot down clear to the floor.
Steam engine,
Engine ninety-nine,
Steel drivers,
Rolling right on by.
Mr. Engineer,
You see I've got a little problem here,
My baby, she's aboard your train,
She says she's never coming back again.
Aw, steam engine,
Engine ninety-nine,
Steel drivers,
Rolling right on by.
She told me goodbye,
She said, "I'm leaving you behind,"
I think I'm gonna die
If I hear that whistle whine.
Mr. Engineer,
Slow the engine down some more,
You're moving, moving just a little too fast,
I've got my foot down clear to the floor.
SOLO
Steam engine,
Engine ninety-nine,
Steel drivers,
Rolling right on by.
Gonna keep a', keep a'rolling,
She's gonna leave me, leave me behind,
I might, I might as well go home, my home,
She's gonna leave me behind,
