October 4, 2016 by BOB BOILEN • We've never done a Tiny Desk Concert that wasn't behind my desk at NPR. But when the White House called and said they were putting on an event called South by South Lawn, a day-long festival filled with innovators and creators from the worlds of technology and art, including music, we jumped at the chance to get involved. We chose Common as the performer and the White House library as the space.
This Tiny Desk Concert was a convergence of art and soul, mixing politics with heart. Common's choice of songs dealt with incarceration as the new slavery, imagined a time where women rule the world and honored the man he looked up to all his life, his father. For this occasion Common put together a special six-piece band of close friends that includes the great Robert Glasper, with his eloquent and delicate touch, on keyboards and Derrick Hodge, whose music spans from hip-hop to folk and has made a big imprint on the world of jazz, on bass. Common also asked his longtime friend and collaborator Bilal to sing on two songs. The performance includes three brand new songs, along with one classic, "I Used To Love H.E.R."
Common was born on Chicago's South Side and grew up in President Obama's city. His rap career began in the early 1990s, back when he was known as Common Sense, and he's always taken on big ideas without easy answers in his songs, from abortion to social justice to the legacy of hip-hop itself. 25 years later, morality and responsibility continue to play significant roles in his songs. In 2015, he won an Academy Award alongside the singer John Legend for their song "Glory" from the movie Selma.
Common told us that he'd been invited to the White House many times before, including by Michelle Obama for a poetry reading back in 2011, but he was thrilled by the prospect of performing his music during Barack Obama's final months as president. One look at this Tiny Desk Concert and you'll see that thrill on his face and hear it throughout this magnificent performance on this very special day.
Common will release his 11th studio album, Black America Again, in November.

Lonnie Rashid Lynn Jr. (born March 13, 1972), better known by his stage name Common (formerly Common Sense), is an American hip hop recording artist, actor, film producer and poet from Chicago, Illinois. Common debuted in 1992 with the album Can I Borrow a Dollar? and maintained a significant underground following into the late 1990s, after which he gained notable mainstream success through his work with the Soulquarians. In 2011, Common launched Think Common Entertainment, his own record label imprint, and, in the past, has released music under various other labels such as Relativity, Geffen and GOOD Music, among others.
Common's first major-label album, Like Water for Chocolate, received widespread critical acclaim and tremendous commercial success. His first Grammy Award was in 2003, winning Best R&B Song for "Love of My Life", with Erykah Badu. Its popularity was matched by May 2005's Be, which was nominated for Best Rap Album, at the 2006 Grammy Awards. Common was awarded his second Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group, for "Southside" (featuring Kanye West), from his July 2007 album Finding Forever. His best-of album, Thisisme Then: The Best of Common, was released on November 27, 2007.

But when the White House called and said they were putting on an event called South by South Lawn, a day-long festival filled with innovators and creators from the worlds of technology and art, including music, we jumped at the chance to get involved. We chose Common as the performer and the White House library as the space. This Tiny Desk Concert was a convergence of art and soul, mixing politics with heart. Common's choice of songs dealt with incarceration as the new slavery, imagined a time where women rule the world and honored the man he looked up to all his life, his father. But when the White House called and said they were putting on an event called South by South Lawn, a day-long festival filled with innovators and creators from the worlds of technology and art, including music, we jumped at the chance to get involved. We chose Common as the performer and the White House library as the space.
This Tiny Desk Concert was a convergence of art and soul, mixing politics with heart. Common's choice of songs dealt with incarceration as the new slavery, imagined a time where women rule the world and honored the man he looked up to all his life, his father. For this occasion Common put together a special six-piece band of close friends that includes the great Robert Glasper, with his eloquent and delicate touch, on keyboards and Derrick Hodge, whose music spans from hip-hop to folk and has made a big imprint on the world of jazz, on bass. Common also asked his longtime friend and collaborator Bilal to sing on two songs. The performance includes three brand new songs, along with one classic, "I Used To Love H.E.R."
Common was born on Chicago's South Side and grew up in President Obama's city. His rap career began in the early 1990s, back when he was known as Common Sense, and he's always taken on big ideas without easy answers in his songs, from abortion to social justice to the legacy of hip-hop itself. 25 years later, morality and responsibility continue to play significant roles in his songs. In 2015, he won an Academy Award alongside the singer John Legend for their song "Glory" from the movie Selma.
Common told us that he'd been invited to the White House many times before, including by Michelle Obama for a poetry reading back in 2011, but he was thrilled by the prospect of performing his music during Barack Obama's final months as president. One look at this Tiny Desk Concert and you'll see that thrill on his face and hear it throughout this magnificent performance on this very special day.
Common will release his 11th studio album, Black America Again, in November.

Electric Circus is the fifth studio album by rapper Common, released December 10, 2002 on the now-defunct MCA Records. The album was highly anticipated and praised by many critics for its ambitious vision. However, it was not as commercially successful as his previous album, Like Water for Chocolate, selling under 300,000 copies. An eclectic album, Electric Circus featured fusions of several genres such as hip hop, pop, rock, electronic, and neo soul. "I wasn't feeling hip hop," the rapper remarked. "So my motivation for that album were other genres of music, like Pink Floyd and Jimi Hendrix. It wasn't hip hop." This was Common's second and last album for MCA, and the label's final release prior to its absorption into Geffen Records.

Go ahead and add another one to the New Black list.
Rapper Common recently weighed in with his thoughts about racism on 'The Daily Show' with Jon Stewart, and in a series of controversial statements, he claimed Black people need to 'extend a hand in love' to white people in order to end racism, and likened Black/white race relations to a love relationship:
"I'm not sitting there like 'white people y'all did us wrong.' I mean we know that that existed. I don't need to keep bringing that up. It's like being in a relationship and continue to bring up the person's issues… Now I'm saying 'Hey, I love you. Let's move past this. Come on baby lets get past this."
Wow. It's a classic case of victim-blaming to make the burden of ending racism the responsibility of Black people, who have historically been the oppressed and not the oppressor. Victim blaming occurs when the victim of a crime or any wrongful act is held entirely or partially responsible for the harm that befell them, and, for the millionth time, Black people are not responsible for white behavior. 'Race' as a construct was created by white people, as were the systems that enable racism and allow white supremacy to perpetuate itself in this country. There is literally NOTHING Black people can do to change the mind of a white racist, because they hate us for a purely illogical reason: our skin color.
Only when white people acknowledge the trauma of slavery and segregation, the long term effects that racist institutions have had on our country and it's inhabitants, and begin to put in the work themselves to end it, can we move forward from racism.

Lil Herb shares details of the "Stop The Violence" campaign and explains the different sounds of Chicago rap.
When he first emerged on the scene, G Herbo (then Lil Herb) was quickly lumped into Chicago's drill movement. His sometimes confrontational style and gritty subject matter does align with the genre in some respects, but when we spoke to Herb, he clarified that he's "far from drill rap".
"I'm a big lyricist, hip-hop head, and that's not drill music," he said, stressing that Chicago rap is all about being yourself, which is why we hear so many different styles from the region. He went on to explain that his versatility is what's allowed him to work with a variety of artists including Chance The Rapper and Common.
As far as the "Put The Guns Down" campaign that Herb has been involved in, the rapper feels he has a responsibility to speak to his fanbase about youth issues. "I know I've got an influence in my city, because I've been through it."
