William Cuthbert Faulkner (/ˈfɔːlknər/, September 25, 1897 – July 6, 1962) was an American writer and Nobel Prize laureate from Oxford, Mississippi. Faulkner wrote novels, short stories, a play, poetry, essays, and screenplays. He is primarily known for his novels and short stories set in the fictional Yoknapatawpha County, based on Lafayette County, Mississippi, where he spent most of his life.
Faulkner is one of the most celebrated writers in American literature generally and Southern literature specifically. Though his work was published as early as 1919, and largely during the 1920s and 1930s, Faulkner was relatively unknown until receiving the 1949 Nobel Prize in Literature, for which he became the only Mississippi-born Nobel laureate. Two of his works, A Fable (1954) and his last novel The Reivers (1962), won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. In 1998, the Modern Library ranked his 1929 novel The Sound and the Fury sixth on its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century; also on the list were As I Lay Dying (1930) and Light in August (1932). Absalom, Absalom! (1936) is often included on similar lists.

Plot: In the wake of a "dirty bomb" attack, a New York City neighborhood known as "Slime City" has been evacuated, except for the homeless ("displaced refugees"). Four squatters searching for food in the ruins of the Zachary Devon Soup Kitchen (Jennifer Bihl, Kealan Patrick Burke, Debbie Rochon, Lee Perkins) discover a supply of Zachary Devon's Home Brewed Elixir and Himalayan Yogurt. When they drink the elixir and eat the yogurt, they are transformed into hideous slime creatures driven to murder - an intermediate step as they are possessed by the spirits of Zachary Devon (Robert Sabin) and the members of his Coven of Flesh, who committed suicide years earlier. When a greedy developer (Roy Frumkes) sets his sites on Slime City, he hires a team of mercenaries (Nelron Hubbard, Tommy Sweeney, T.J. Merrick, Eric Mache, and Nicholas John Morgan Anderson) to wipe out the homeless population. It's a battle royal between the Slime Heads, the mercenaries, and bloodthirsty mutant cannibals! A loving tribute to the over the top splatter films of the 1980s, featuring Brooke Lewis, Mary Bogle, and Lloyd Kaufman.

Plot: For want of a nail a shoe was lost, for want of a shoe... a young man's life is almost lost, which is exactly what this film is all about: a man barely twenty who wants desperately to pull out of London's drug world by taking a job as a waiter in a 'normal' restaurant. But to do this he must come up with a "sensible pair of shoes," an item that his homeless meanderings hasn't provided him. In fact, the shoes become a symbol of his striving to break away from those, like himself, who are caught up in the tragedy of drugs and lasciviousness which is so aptly described... sometimes graphically, always realistically... in this film.

Upon arriving in Rock Point, Marsha witnesses a Ku Klux Klan slaying of who she would later learn is Walter Adams, an out of town reporter who was going to write an exposé on the Klan. Marsha even saw two of the men's faces after they removed their hoods, but they didn't see Marsha. Upon later arriving at Lucy's house, Marsha is shocked to see that Hank was one of the Klansmen committing the murder, he being a Klansman of which Lucy is unaware. Marsha decides to confront Hank and Lucy about what she saw. Meanwhile, county prosecutor Burt Rainey knows that the Klan committed the murder, everyone in town is aware that the Klan committed the murder, but Rainey knows that no one will come forward to implicate the Klan for what they see is the good of the town. He is also aware that Marsha would have been in the area when the murder was committed and wants to talk to her and hope that being an outsider will allow her to speak freely if she did indeed see anything. Marsha has to decide what to say to Rainey specifically taking into account how best to protect her and Lucy's welfare, which includes the fact that Lucy is pregnant with Hank's baby.

His place as one of the great writers of the 20th century firmly established, William Faulkner accepted an invitation in 1957 from U.Va.'s English department to come to the University as writer-in-residence. Faulkner's appointment was cause for excitement among students and faculty, though the winner of the 1949 Nobel Prize for Literature initially caught Virginians off guard. After Faulkner arrived on Grounds, his "observations on 'Virginia snobs' caused somewhat of a sensation," wrote Virginius Dabney in Mr. Jefferson's University. "He liked the state, he said, 'because Virginians are all snobs and I like snobs.'" For full article, go to http://www.uvamagazine.org/site/c.esJNK1PIJrH/b.4103475//
From 24 April 1958, speaking at the University of Virginia.
William Faulkner reads from early in the novel, the first "Tull" section. Tull reports conversations and private thoughts. He is with Anse. This 1930 novel starts with the death of Addie Bundren--hence the title "As I Lay Dying." Agamemnon begins a speech in Book XI of Homer's The Odyssey with "As I lay dying..." Faulkner's work about the poor Bundrens in rural Mississippi has echoes of mythology. Anse is Addie's lazy husband. He fears sweating--it will bring about his death, so he avoids work that may cause him to sweat. Anse is preoccupied with three thoughts: his wife dying, her wish to be buried 40 miles from home, and money. Readers learn of the family's efforts over eight days or so to honor Addie's wish to be buried next to her parents in Jefferson, about 40 miles from the ...
During an interview, William Faulkner is asked this: "How do you pronounce the name of your mythical county?" Faulkner replies, "If you break it down into syllables, it's simple: Y-o-k, n-a, p-a, t-a-w, p-h-a. YOK-na-pa-TAW-pha. It's a Chickasaw Indian word, meaning water runs slow through flat land." Yoknapatawpha County is a fictional county based on Lafayette County, Mississippi--the land that the novelist knew best. Its county seat is Oxford, where the writer had a home. The word Yoknapatawpha is pronounced "Yok'na pa TAW pha." It is derived from two Chickasaw words—Yocona and petopha ("split land"--the writer embellishes by saying it means "water runs slow through flat land."). Faulkner is speaking to a University of Virginia audience. Yoknapatawpha was the original name for ...
