An airstrike or air strike is an attack on a specific objective by military aircraft during an offensive mission. Air strikes are commonly delivered from aircraft such as fighters, bombers, ground attack aircraft, and attack helicopters. The official definition includes all sorts of targets, including enemy air targets, but in popular use the term is usually narrowed to a tactical (small-scale) attack on a ground or naval objective. Weapons used in an airstrike can range from machine gun bullets and missiles to various types of bombs. It is also commonly referred to as an air raid.
In close air support, air strikes are usually controlled by trained observers for coordination with friendly ground troops in a manner derived from artillery tactics.

Russian attack jets have hit 51 Islamic State targets in Syria in the past 24 hours, including four command posts, six arms depots, a mortar battery, two underground bunkers, 32 field camps and six outposts. The strikes took place in the Latakia, Aleppo, Hama and Damascus provinces. The damage the Russian SU-34 jets caused to the underground bunkers was especially significant, Defense Ministry spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov said.

The US-led coalition has bombed Syrian army’s positions near the eastern city of Dayr al-Zawr. The attack targeted a military airport at the vicinity of Thardah Mountain. According to the so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, at least 83 soldiers have been killed and over 120 wounded in the airstrikes. Russia puts the death toll at over 60. ISIL immediately went on the offensive after the strikes and took control of the area. However, the Syrian army managed to retake the lost ground. Under a fragile truce deal brokered by the United States and Russia, fighting in Syria is to halt on all fronts across the country except those held by ISIL and Nusra Front. Iraqi government forces battling an Al-Qaida offensive have launched air strikes on the city of Ramadi and Falluja, killing many Islamist militants, according to local officials. Al-Qaeda's Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) has been steadily tightening its grip in the vast Sunni-dominated Anbar province in recent months in a bid to create a Sunni Muslim state straddling the frontier with Syria. But last week's capture of positions in Ramadi and large parts of Falluja was the first time in years that Sunni insurgents had taken ground in the province's major cities and held their positions for days.

American air strikes in Afghanistan this year have already significantly surpassed the total number conducted in 2015, a stark indicator of the United States' struggle to extricate itself from the conflict and stick to its declared "non-combat" mission. American warplanes have conducted around 700 air strikes so far this year, compared to about 500 in total last year, according to U.S. military officials, signaling a deeper role for American forces that is expected to continue for the foreseeable future. Ending American involvement in Afghanistan was one of President Barack Obama's signature promises and he declared the combat mission over at the end of 2014. Top American military commanders in Afghanistan successfully pressed Obama to reverse earlier restrictions on the use of air strikes...
