Mexico City is one of the financial powerhouses and cultural capitals of Latin America; it’s also a city of color.
Mexico City’s colors run deepest in the main square, the Zócalo, once the epicenter of the Mexican Civilization. Today, this area is presided over by a temple of a different kind, The Metropolitan Cathedral.
Throughout the Centro Histórico district, over 1500 heritage buildings vie for your attention. The streets of this district overflow with museums and galleries. For a window into the life and color of yesteryear, visit the fabulous Museo Franz Mayer.
For a change of color, head to Chapultepec Park, one of the largest urban parks in the world. The park is home to cultural institutions such as the Auditorio Nacional and the Museum of Anthropology, as well as the popular Chapultepec Zoo.
Pay your respects to the Niños Heroes, a monument which honors the six boy soldiers who gave their lives defending Castillo de Chapultepec. Today, the castle serves as the National Museum of History.
Just to the north is Nuevo Polanco, a former warehouse area rapidly being transformed by new architectural visions, such as the Museo Soumaya and Museo Jumex.
To the south of the city is Coyoacán. In the early 20th century the district’s artists, writers and intellectuals inspired not only Mexico, but the entire world. Visit The Blue House, the birthplace of Frieda Kahlo, and the Museo Casa Estudio Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo, where these two giants of Mexican art worked, lived and loved.
Just to the south are the incredible murals and buildings of Ciudad Universitaria, which, when constructed in the 1950s, was the city’s largest single building project since the time of the Aztecs.
The spirit of bohemia continues amid the sophisticated hues and beauty of districts such as Roma and Condesa. At Xochimilco, simply float away on a riot of color on the last of the city’s Aztec canals.
In Mexico City there is color everywhere, and once you experience it, your memories will never fade.

Life in the Mexican capital throws up many obstacles, but as we found out in the return of our long-running film series, a small number of dedicated people are trying to build an electronic music scene in one of the world's most chaotic cities.
Mexico City is one of the largest and most vibrant metropolises in the world, but its electronic music scene has yet to truly flourish. It's a city where vast inequality, crime and widespread corruption are everyday realities, and where nightclubs are largely reserved for the moneyed elites. For those who put music first, there are many obstacles—a lack of venues, a limited audience, very little financial gain. Whether you're putting on parties, releasing music or hustling for gigs, making ends meet is a constant struggle.
But the issue also runs deeper. Malinchismo, which means a preference for the foreign over the local, is a term you hear a lot in Mexico City, and it spills over into all aspects of life. In dance music, Mexican fans and DJs will avidly follow artists from Berlin or London but pay little attention to national talent. The domestic scene therefore suffers, unable to develop an identity of its own.
In our latest Real Scenes film we travelled to the colourful, chaotic capital to meet the people who are trying to make dance music work in Mexico City. We found a core community as dedicated, talented and passionate as any in the world.

It's Saturday morning in a Mexico City subway station, and the members of the Panamiur gang are headed to a party. Their leader, Cidel, is wearing huge sunglasses, a fauxhawk slathered in hair gel, cargo pants, and a T-shirt with a giant 2 and 6 airbrushed across it—a reference to November 26, 2010, the date the Panamiurs were founded.
The four dozen kids surrounding Cidel are similarly adorned in fake gold chains, oversize shades, brightly colored baseball caps, and tight jeans. They shout chants at a member of a rival gang on the other side of the platform. "Jori's fucking mom is taking a bath, eh, oh!," they holler. "She's very close to our territory, eh, oh! With a huge dick in one hand and a rag with PVC glue in the other, eh, oh! And the gang says, we are gonna rape her, we are gonna rape her. Hard, hard in the ass! Fucking bitch!" .....

Mexico City (Spanish: Ciudad de México

As an "alpha" global city Mexico City is one of the most important financial centers in the Americas. It is located in the Valley of Mexico (Valle de México), a large valley in the high plateaus at the center of Mexico, at an altitude of 2,240 metres (7,350 ft). The city consists of sixteen municipalities (previously called boroughs).
The 2009 estimated population for the city proper was around 8.84 million people, with a land area of 1,485 square kilometres (573 sq mi). According to the most recent definition agreed upon by the federal and state governments, the Greater Mexico City population is 21.2 million people, making it the largest metropolitan area in the western hemisphere, the eleventh-largest agglomeration, and the largest Spanish-speaking city in the world.

Life in the Mexican capital throws up many obstacles, but as we found out in the return of our long-running film series, a small number of dedicated people are trying to build an electronic music scene in one of the world's most chaotic cities. Mexico City is one of the largest and most vibrant metropolises in the world, but its electronic music scene has yet to truly flourish. It's a city where vast inequality, crime and widespread corruption are everyday realities, and where nightclubs are largely reserved for the moneyed elites. For those who put music first, there are many obstacles—a lack of venues, a limited audience, very little financial gain. Whether you're putting on parties, releasing music or hustling for gigs, making ends meet is a constant struggle. But the issue also runs deeper. Malinchismo, which means a preference for the foreign over the local, is a term you hear a lot in Mexico City, and it spills over into all aspects of life. In dance music, Mexican fans and DJs will avidly follow artists from Berlin or London but pay little attention to national talent. The domestic scene therefore suffers, unable to develop an identity of its own. In our latest Real Scenes film we travelled to the colourful, chaotic capital to meet the people who are trying to make dance music work in Mexico City. It's Saturday morning in a Mexico City subway station, and the members of the Panamiur gang are headed to a party. Their leader, Cidel, is wearing huge sunglasses, a fauxhawk slathered in hair gel, cargo pants, and a T-shirt with a giant 2 and 6 airbrushed across it—a reference to November 26, 2010, the date the Panamiurs were founded. The four dozen kids surrounding Cidel are similarly adorned in fake gold chains, oversize shades, brightly colored baseball caps, and tight jeans. They shout chants at a member of a rival gang on the other side of the platform. "Jori's fucking mom is taking a bath, eh, oh!," they holler. "She's very close to our territory, eh, oh! For a change of color, head to Chapultepec Park, one of the largest urban parks in the world. The park is home to cultural institutions such as the Auditorio Nacional and the Museum of Anthropology, as well as the popular Chapultepec Zoo.
Pay your respects to the Niños Heroes, a monument which honors the six boy soldiers who gave their lives defending Castillo de Chapultepec. Today, the castle serves as the National Museum of History.
Just to the north is Nuevo Polanco, a former warehouse area rapidly being transformed by new architectural visions, such as the Museo Soumaya and Museo Jumex.
To the south of the city is Coyoacán. In the early 20th century the district’s artists, writers and intellectuals inspired not only Mexico, but the entire world. Visit The Blue House, the birthplace of Frieda Kahlo, and the Museo Casa Estudio Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo, where these two giants of Mexican art worked, lived and loved.
Just to the south are the incredible murals and buildings of Ciudad Universitaria, which, when constructed in the 1950s, was the city’s largest single building project since the time of the Aztecs.
The spirit of bohemia continues amid the sophisticated hues and beauty of districts such as Roma and Condesa. At Xochimilco, simply float away on a riot of color on the last of the city’s Aztec canals.
In Mexico City there is color everywhere, and once you experience it, your memories will never fade.

Mexico City is one of the financial powerhouses and cultural capitals of Latin America; it’s also a city of color.
Mexico City’s colors run deepest in the main square, the Zócalo, once the epicenter of the Mexican Civilization. Today, this area is presided over by a temple of a different kind, The Metropolitan Cathedral.
Throughout the Centro Histórico district, over 1500 heritage buildings vie for your attention. The streets of this district overflow with museums and galleries. For a window into the life and color of yesteryear, visit the fabulous Museo Franz Mayer.
For a change of color, head to Chapultepec Park, one of the largest urban parks in the world. The park is home to cultural institutions such as the Auditorio Nacional and the Museum of Anthropology, as well as the popular Chapultepec Zoo.
Pay your respects to the Niños Heroes, a monument which honors the six boy soldiers who gave their lives defending Castillo de Chapultepec. Today, the castle serves as the National Museum of History.
Just to the north is Nuevo Polanco, a former warehouse area rapidly being transformed by new architectural visions, such as the Museo Soumaya and Museo Jumex.
To the south of the city is Coyoacán. In the early 20th century the district’s artists, writers and intellectuals inspired not only Mexico, but the entire world. Visit The Blue House, the birthplace of Frieda Kahlo, and the Museo Casa Estudio Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo, where these two giants of Mexican art worked, lived and loved.
Just to the south are the incredible murals and buildings of Ciudad Universitaria, which, when constructed in the 1950s, was the city’s largest single building project since the time of the Aztecs.
The spirit of bohemia continues amid the sophisticated hues and beauty of districts such as Roma and Condesa. At Xochimilco, simply float away on a riot of color on the last of the city’s Aztec canals.
In Mexico City there is color everywhere, and once you experience it, your memories will never fade.

Life in the Mexican capital throws up many obstacles, but as we found out in the return of our long-running film series, a small number of dedicated people are trying to build an electronic music scene in one of the world's most chaotic cities.
Mexico City is one of the largest and most vibrant metropolises in the world, but its electronic music scene has yet to truly flourish. It's a city where vast inequality, crime and widespread corruption are everyday realities, and where nightclubs are largely reserved for the moneyed elites. For those who put music first, there are many obstacles—a lack of venues, a limited audience, very little financial gain. Whether you're putting on parties, releasing music or hustling for gigs, making ends meet is a constant struggle.
But the issue also runs deeper. Malinchismo, which means a preference for the foreign over the local, is a term you hear a lot in Mexico City, and it spills over into all aspects of life. In dance music, Mexican fans and DJs will avidly follow artists from Berlin or London but pay little attention to national talent. The domestic scene therefore suffers, unable to develop an identity of its own.
In our latest Real Scenes film we travelled to the colourful, chaotic capital to meet the people who are trying to make dance music work in Mexico City. We found a core community as dedicated, talented and passionate as any in the world.

It's Saturday morning in a Mexico City subway station, and the members of the Panamiur gang are headed to a party. Their leader, Cidel, is wearing huge sunglasses, a fauxhawk slathered in hair gel, cargo pants, and a T-shirt with a giant 2 and 6 airbrushed across it—a reference to November 26, 2010, the date the Panamiurs were founded.
The four dozen kids surrounding Cidel are similarly adorned in fake gold chains, oversize shades, brightly colored baseball caps, and tight jeans. They shout chants at a member of a rival gang on the other side of the platform. "Jori's fucking mom is taking a bath, eh, oh!," they holler. "She's very close to our territory, eh, oh! With a huge dick in one hand and a rag with PVC glue in the other, eh, oh! And the gang says, we are gonna rape her, we are gonna rape her. Hard, hard in the ass! Fucking bitch!" .....

While traveling to Mexico City, we saw parks, street vendors, museums, historic places, restaurants, Teotihuacan pyramids, dogs, the Metro, lots of art, and much more. Some of the restaurants we tried included: Casa Virginia, Lalo!, Los Danzantes, Restaurante Oaxaca en Mexico, Contramar, and others. We got around mostly by Uber, lots of walking, and the Metro (subway). Mexico City is a vibrant and very cosmopolitan city. While most "gringos" fear that Mexico City is dangerous and dirty, it is quite the opposite. The city seemed very safe and clean. The parks and walkable neighborhoods are terrific. There are countless coffee shops, restaurants, boutique stores, galleries, museums, and more. We stayed at a fantastic little bed and breakfast called The Red Tree House located in the La Cond...

Tamales On the corner of Río Lerma and Río Danubio in Cuauhtémoc we sample street food number one, a tamale. These traditional Mexican breakfast snacks, literally meaning “wrapped in a leaf”, were first made for warring Aztec and Mayan tribes. Pockets of masa (a type of starchy corn dough) are stuffed with sweet or savoury fillings, wrapped in banana leaves or cornhusks and then steamed. Arturo, fortunately, reminds us to remove the wrapper before eating. Tamales often go hand-in-hand with atole, a thick corn-based drink that is served lukewarm in a variety of flavours. I created this video montage of my trip to Mexico City, Mexico that took place from January 1st to January 12th 2014. Mexico City is an impressive modern city of over 20 Million people. I was really impressed by the city, it's full of ancient ruins, museums,skyscrapers, monuments, statues, parks and fountains. The Mexico City Metro, is definitely the best way to move around the city, as traffic is unbelievable. Even with 2 weeks of vacation I simply did not have enough time to visit every attraction. Paseo de la Reforma is a stunning tree lined avenue full of roundabouts and monuments. A trip to Mexico City is not complete without a visit to the Teotihuacan Archeological site. Arturo, fortunately, reminds us to remove the wrapper before eating. Tamales often go hand-in-hand with atole, a thick corn-based drink that is served lukewarm in a variety of flavours. We go for the champurrado, a chocolate-based atole that is tasty, but doesn’t have quite the same effect as a double espresso.

Stop number two is a tortillería. Tortillas, a type of thin, unleavened flatbread made from finely ground corn, are a staple of Mexican cuisine and have been for hundreds of years. Every neighbourhood in the country has one of these small, hole-in-the-wall outlets where a machine spits out freshly made tortillas onto a conveyor belt. Our particular spot, on Río Tigris, between Río Lerma & Río Panuco in Cuauhtémoc, makes up to 800kg of tortillas a day, costing just M$12 pesos per kilo; although Arturo says this is a little pricey compared to other neighbourhoods.
Jugo (fresh juice)
A short walk away our next stop is a fresh juice stand on the corner of Río Lerma and Río Sena, Cuauhtémoc. These juice bars are everywhere in the capital and range from mobile carts serving freshly squeezed fresh oranges to permanent structures such as this one. Juice options go from the single fruit to the more elaborate. I order a jugo verde (green juice), a combination of apple, celery, parsley and the ubiquitous Mexican cactus or nopal. Alongside is a food cart where quesadillas and tlacoyos are cooked on the spot. Quesadillas traditionally always contain cheese (which explains the queso part of the name) but Mexico City is the one place in the country where you can order one without. Even tastier, however, are the tlacoyos. These are flattened masa pockets filled with cheese, fava beans or refried beans and then topped with a variety of trimmings including nopal, sour cream and coriander. Best eaten straight off the grill, they are a popular Mexico City snack made almost exclusively by women.

Jugo (fresh juice)
A short walk away our next stop is a fresh juice stand on the corner of Río Lerma and Río Sena, Cuauhtémoc. These juice bars are everywhere in the capital and range from mobile carts serving freshly squeezed fresh oranges to permanent structures such as this one. Juice options go from the single fruit to the more elaborate. I order a jugo verde (green juice), a combination of apple, celery, parsley and the ubiquitous Mexican cactus or nopal. Alongside is a food cart where quesadillas and tlacoyos are cooked on the spot. Quesadillas traditionally always contain cheese (which explains the queso part of the name) but Mexico City is the one place in the country where you can order one without. Even tastier, however, are the tlacoyos. These are flattened masa pockets filled with cheese, fava beans or refried beans and then topped with a variety of trimmings including nopal, sour cream and coriander. Best eaten straight off the grill, they are a popular Mexico City snack made almost exclusively by women.

I created this video montage of my trip to Mexico City, Mexico that took place from January 1st to January 12th 2014. Mexico City is an impressive modern city of over 20 Million people. I was really impressed by the city, it's full of ancient ruins, museums,skyscrapers, monuments, statues, parks and fountains. The Mexico City Metro, is definitely the best way to move around the city, as traffic is unbelievable. Even with 2 weeks of vacation I simply did not have enough time to visit every attraction. Paseo de la Reforma is a stunning tree lined avenue full of roundabouts and monuments. A trip to Mexico City is not complete without a visit to the Teotihuacan Archeological site. On a good note, I was never concerned for my safety or felt threatened in any way.
