http://www.AsktheBuilder.com founder, Tim Carter, shows a nifty trick when framing walls for a house. Don't allow an interior wall to touch an exterior wall. Leave a 3/4-inch gap so you can slide drywall in one giant piece instead of having to cut it at the corners. This wall framing trick also helps prevent air infiltration because the vapor barrier and drywall are solid along the entire exterior wall surfaces of the entire house. You save lumber too because there's no need for lathe catcher studs at the intersection of the two walls.

Wall Framing Strategies: Wall Corners is a quick guide to showing 3 different methods of constructing a wall corner when framing a wall. I will show you my preferred and most common in use wall corner. There is the two stud, three stud and for stud wall corners. The four stud wall corner will be your best for strength and longevity for the sheet rock. Often when remodeling or renovations, people will choose a cheaper and what will get them by at the time method. I will talk about the cons of going the cheaper routes. The two stud wall corner uses metal clips that give the sheetrock something to rest against so that you can push another piece of sheetrock against it at a 90 degree to support it. I do not recommend this unless it is just too hard to get another board in if this was a ren...

This video captures the making of a medieval style capstan we will use for the raising of our cabin. The basic design came from timber framer Jim Rogers, who was kind enough to share his plans. We made our frame of 6x6 White Oak, the braces and stretchers are also white oak, and a bit of yellow pine was used for the yolk. The axle was made from Black Gum, a very tough and split resistant wood. The axle pin is a bit of antique wrought iron bar, about 1 1/4 " thick, which had flats filled on one end and the other left round to spin freely in its housing. In combination with a block and tackle this device is capable of huge feats of strength. As the axle is about 8inches in diameter and the handles are 8 feet long, the capstan alone give a 12 to 1 mechanical advantage to any force applied...
