Tim Cahill grabs Kevin Muscat in spiteful FFA Cup Melbourne Derby as tensions flare

Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City played out one of the most spiteful clashes in derby history — with Tim Cahill and Kevin Muscat right in the thick of it.

Cahill, City’s star recruit this season, was antagonised all night, particularly by Victory midfielders Leigh Broxham and Carl Valeri.

Broxham and teammate Jason Geria tackled Cahill to the ground in the early minutes, sparking a push and shove involving almost all players on the park.

FFA Cup: Tim Cahill received plenty of attention from the Victory defence early in the FFA Cup semi final with two defenders taking him to ground and sparking a melee.

Cahill and Broxham came together again midway through the half when Broxham went in to a challenge on the Socceroos legend full blooded, with the Victory man later waving away Cahill’s handshake attempts.

When it was Broxham who was then on the end of a Cahill challenge close to the touchline late in the half, Muscat and his players demanded a card be brandished.

The assistant referee got involved, but not before Cahill and Muscat came face-to-face, the former Millwall teammates giving each other plenty of stick.

While it wasn’t quite Muscat on John Kosmina from decade’s past, it was definitely a talking point, even if they did have a cuddle and made up at the half-time break.
