Badminton Australia Disability Network call for players ahead of 2020 Paralympics

DISABLED athletes in the southeast are being encouraged to grab their racquets and head to the courts ahead of the next Paralympics.

The Badminton Australia Disability Network is hoping to bolster numbers by appealing to locals who may be interested in the sport.

As part of its push to attract players, the association held a for wheelchair and amputee athletes in Hallam last month.

The Hallam Para-Badminton Championships was the first such stand-alone competition across Australia.

“The day went great,” organiser Kay Coady said.

“Our reason for targeting the Greater Dandenong area is the large Vietnamese and Asian communities where badminton is the national sport.

“With the inclusion of para-badminton in the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics there is growing interest and we want to encourage athletes to have a go.”
