Looking back on Geno Smith’s Jets career — likely now done

Three years after being selected in the second round by the Jets, it appears Geno Smith has thrown his final pass for the team.

The news of Smith’s torn ACL on Monday means Smith’s season is over and with it his Jets’ career likely ends, too. Smith is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent in March. All indications have been the team has no interest in bringing him back.

If this is indeed the end, Smith’s final completion as a Jet was a 7-yard pass to Matt Forte, his final touchdown the 69-yard catch and run by Quincy Enunwa, and his final play the sack that ended with him clutching his knee.

Smith’s time with the Jets likely will be best remembered for how it got derailed by the locker room punch from IK Enemkpali over $600. Smith showed glimpses of greatness at times while leading the Jets to a Monday night win in Atlanta as a rookie or finishing the 2014 season with a perfect passer rating in Miami. But those moments were few and far between. The majority of Smith’s time with the Jets was a disappointment.

Smith went 12-18 in 30 starts with the Jets (oddly enough, the 12th win coming Sunday against the Ravens). He completed 57.9 percent of his passes for 5,962 yards, 28 passing touchdowns, 36 interceptions, seven rushing touchdowns and seven fumbles lost.

Former general manager John Idzik drafted Smith in the second round of the 2013 draft after he slid out of the first round. Smith started as a rookie after Mark Sanchez’s preseason shoulder injury. He had an up-and-down rookie season marked by inconsistency. Smith played on two dreadful Jets teams when he had very little talent around him, something his supporters felt hurt his development. In his second season, he was benched midway through the year for Michael Vick but regained the starting job and finished the season strong.

Those first two years had several off-the-field incidents, too, including Smith cursing out a fan at MetLife Stadium and him missing a team meeting the night before a game.

He was slated to be the starter in 2015 under new coach Todd Bowles, but Enemkpali broke Smith’s jaw with a punch two days before the first preseason game. Ryan Fitzpatrick ascended to the starting job and led the Jets to a 10-6 record. Smith played in one game that season when Fitzpatrick was injured.

This year, Smith sat on the bench until last week in Arizona when he relieved an erratic Fitzpatrick. He got his first start of the season Sunday against the Ravens, but the second-quarter sack by Matt Judon ended his day, his season and — it looks like — his time with the Jets.
