Questo è un momento di vergogna e di dolore. Non è un giorno per la politica.
Ho colto questa occasione per parlare brevemente con voi di questa minaccia insensata della violenza in America che ancora una volta ha macchiato la nostra terra e la vita di ognuno di noi.
Non è la gara di preoccupazione. Le vittime della violenza sono neri e bianchi, ricchi e poveri, giovani e vecchi, famosi e sconosciuti sono, cosa più importante di tutti, gli esseri umani amati e necessari per gli altri esseri umani. Ognuno, non importa dove vive o quello che fa, siamo certi che soffre per qual insensato atto di sangue. Eppure continua.
Perché? Che cosa la violenza ha mai realizzato? Che cosa ha mai creato? Non causa dei martiri è mai stata placata dal proiettile del suo assassino.
Torti non sono mai stati raddrizzati da tumulti e disordini civili. Un cecchino è solo un codardo, non un eroe, è un incontrollato, incontrollabile folle e solo la voce della follia, non la voce del popolo.
Ogni volta che la vita di un americano viene spezzata da un altro americano senza motivo, ogni volta che viene lacerato quel tessuto vitale che un altro uomo ha così dolorosamente e faticosamente intrecciato, per se stesso e per i suoi figli, ogni volta che questo accade l'intera nazione ne resta umiliata.
"Tra gli uomini liberi ", ha detto Abraham Lincoln," non ci può essere nessun appello di successo dal ballottaggio per il proiettile, e coloro che prendono tale ricorso è sicuro che perdono il loro caso e ne pagheranno il costo"
Eppure sembriamo tollerare un livello crescente di violenza, che ignora sia la nostra comune umanità che le nostre pretese di civiltà. Accettiamo tranquillamente reportage giornalistici di civili massacrati in terre lontane. Glorifichiamo le uccisioni sugli schermi del cinema e della TV, e lo chiamiamo "intrattenimento".
Troppo spesso giustifichiamo coloro che vogliono costruire la propria vita sui sogni infranti di altri esseri umani.
Alcuni cercano capri espiatori, altri cercano complotti, ma una cosa è chiara: la violenza genera violenza, la repressione porta ritorsione, e solo una pulizia di tutta la nostra società può rimuovere questa malattia dalla nostra anima.
C'è poi un altro tipo di violenza, più lenta ma altrettanto nefasta e devastante ...... quanto un colpo di fucile o una bomba nella notte. E' la violenza delle istituzioni, l'indifferenza, l'immobilità e il degrado. Questa è la violenza che colpisce i poveri, e avvelena le relazioni fra gli uomini perchè hanno un diverso colore della pelle. E' la lenta distruzione di un bambino per fame, e scuole senza libri, e case senza il riscaldamento d'inverno.
Si toglie all'uomo la sua essenza nel negargli la possibilità di presentarsi come un padre e come un uomo in mezzo ad altri uomini. E anche questo colpisce tutti noi.
Quando insegni ad un uomo ad odiare e temere suo fratello, quando insegni che l'altro è inferiore a causa del suo colore o per quello in cui crede, o per le sue idee politiche, quando insegni che quelli diversi da te minacciano la tua libertà, il tuo lavoro, la tua casa o la tua famiglia, allora impari anche ad affrontare gli altri non come concittadini ma come nemici, impari ad essere accolto non con collaborazione ma con sopraffazione, impari ad essere soggiogato e reso schiavo.
Alla fine impariamo a guardare ai nostri fratelli come estranei. Estranei con cui condividiamo la città ma non la comunità, persone legate a noi dal luogo in cui vivono, ma non da un intento comune. Impariamo a condividere solo una paura comune, un comune desiderio di allontanarci l'uno dall'altro, una spinta comune a rispondere al disaccordo con la violenza.
Dobbiamo riconoscere la vanità delle false distinzioni, le false distinzioni fra gli uomini, e dobbiamo trovare il nostro modo di crescere, nello sforzo di far crescere tutti. Dobbiamo riconoscere di fronte a noi stessi che il futuro dei nostri figli non può essere costruito sulle disgrazie di qualcun altro.
La nostra vita su questo pianeta è troppo breve, il lavoro da fare è troppo grande, per permettere che questo sentimento si diffonda ancora, in questo nostro paese. Di certo non si può cancellare il problema con un programma, ne con una legge. Potremmo però ricordarci, almeno una volta, che coloro che vivono con noi sono nostri fratelli, e condividono con noi lo stesso breve istante di vita. Che essi desiderano, come noi, solo la possibilità di vivere la propria vita, con motivazione e felicità, conquistando ogni soddisfazione e ogni realizzazione possibile.
Sicuramente il legame di un destino che ci accomuna, il legame di scopi che ci accomunano, può cominciare a insegnarci qualcosa. Sicuramente possiamo imparare, almeno, a guardare chi ci sta intorno, il nostro prossimo, e possiamo cominciare a lavorare con maggiore impegno per ricucire le ferite che ci sono tra noi e per tornare ad essere fratelli e compatrioti nel cuore.

Bobby (2006 film)
Bobby is a 2006 American drama film written and directed by Emilio Estevez, and starring an ensemble cast. The screenplay is a fictionalized account of the hours leading up to the June 5, 1968 shooting of U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy in the kitchen of The Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles following his win of the 1968 Democratic Party presidential primary in California.
Plot Synopsis
The film recreates the ambiance of the era and invokes the hopes inspired by Kennedy through the use of actual broadcast and newsfilm footage of the senator intercut with dramatic sequences involving mostly fictional characters. It uses an ensemble plot device similar to that employed in the 1932 film Grand Hotel, and by Robert Altman in Nashville.
The characters include John Casey, a retired hotel doorman who spends his days playing chess with his friend Nelson in the lobby; Diane, who is marrying her friend William with the hope his marital status will have him deployed to a military base in Germany rather than the battlefields of Vietnam when his tour of duty begins; Virginia Fallon, an alcoholic singer whose career is on the downswing, her put-upon husband/manager Tim, and her agent Phil; Miriam Ebbers, a beautician who works in the hotel salon, and her husband Paul, the hotel manager, who is having an affair with switchboard operator Angela; food and beverage manager Daryl Timmons, whose racist attitude gets him fired; African American sous chef Edward Robinson and Mexican American busboys José and Miguel; hotel coffee shop waitress Susan; Jimmy and Cooper, campaign volunteers who are sidetracked by an acid trip they take with the help of drug dealer Fisher; married socialites and campaign donors Samantha and Jack; campaign manager Wade and staffer Dwayne, who is in a love interest with Angela's colleague, Patricia; and Czechoslovak reporter Lenka Janáčková, who is determined to get an interview with Kennedy.

Ho colto questa occasione per parlare brevemente con voi di questa minaccia insensata della violenza in America che ancora una volta ha macchiato la nostra terra e la vita di ognuno di noi.
Non è la gara di preoccupazione. Le vittime della violenza sono neri e bianchi, ricchi e poveri, giovani e vecchi, famosi e sconosciuti sono, cosa più importante di tutti, gli esseri umani amati e necessari per gli altri esseri umani. Ognuno, non importa dove vive o quello che fa, siamo certi che soffre per qual insensato atto di sangue. Eppure continua.
Perché? Che cosa la violenza ha mai realizzato? Che cosa ha mai creato? Non causa dei martiri è mai stata placata dal proiettile del suo assassino.
Torti non sono mai stati raddrizzati da tumulti e disordini civili. Un cecchino è solo un codardo, non un eroe, è un incontrollato, incontrollabile folle e solo la voce della follia, non la voce del popolo.
Ogni volta che la vita di un americano viene spezzata da un altro americano senza motivo, ogni volta che viene lacerato quel tessuto vitale che un altro uomo ha così dolorosamente e faticosamente intrecciato, per se stesso e per i suoi figli, ogni volta che questo accade l'intera nazione ne resta umiliata.
"Tra gli uomini liberi ", ha detto Abraham Lincoln," non ci può essere nessun appello di successo dal ballottaggio per il proiettile, e coloro che prendono tale ricorso è sicuro che perdono il loro caso e ne pagheranno il costo"
Eppure sembriamo tollerare un livello crescente di violenza, che ignora sia la nostra comune umanità che le nostre pretese di civiltà. Accettiamo tranquillamente reportage giornalistici di civili massacrati in terre lontane. Glorifichiamo le uccisioni sugli schermi del cinema e della TV, e lo chiamiamo "intrattenimento".
Troppo spesso giustifichiamo coloro che vogliono costruire la propria vita sui sogni infranti di altri esseri umani.
Alcuni cercano capri espiatori, altri cercano complotti, ma una cosa è chiara: la violenza genera violenza, la repressione porta ritorsione, e solo una pulizia di tutta la nostra società può rimuovere questa malattia dalla nostra anima.
C'è poi un altro tipo di violenza, più lenta ma altrettanto nefasta e devastante ...... quanto un colpo di fucile o una bomba nella notte. E' la violenza delle istituzioni, l'indifferenza, l'immobilità e il degrado. Questa è la violenza che colpisce i poveri, e avvelena le relazioni fra gli uomini perchè hanno un diverso colore della pelle. E' la lenta distruzione di un bambino per fame, e scuole senza libri, e case senza il riscaldamento d'inverno.
Si toglie all'uomo la sua essenza nel negargli la possibilità di presentarsi come un padre e come un uomo in mezzo ad altri uomini. E anche questo colpisce tutti noi.
Quando insegni ad un uomo ad odiare e temere suo fratello, quando insegni che l'altro è inferiore a causa del suo colore o per quello in cui crede, o per le sue idee politiche, quando insegni che quelli diversi da te minacciano la tua libertà, il tuo lavoro, la tua casa o la tua famiglia, allora impari anche ad affrontare gli altri non come concittadini ma come nemici, impari ad essere accolto non con collaborazione ma con sopraffazione, impari ad essere soggiogato e reso schiavo.
Alla fine impariamo a guardare ai nostri fratelli come estranei. Estranei con cui condividiamo la città ma non la comunità, persone legate a noi dal luogo in cui vivono, ma non da un intento comune. Impariamo a condividere solo una paura comune, un comune desiderio di allontanarci l'uno dall'altro, una spinta comune a rispondere al disaccordo con la violenza.
Dobbiamo riconoscere la vanità delle false distinzioni, le false distinzioni fra gli uomini, e dobbiamo trovare il nostro modo di crescere, nello sforzo di far crescere tutti. Dobbiamo riconoscere di fronte a noi stessi che il futuro dei nostri figli non può essere costruito sulle disgrazie di qualcun altro.
La nostra vita su questo pianeta è troppo breve, il lavoro da fare è troppo grande, per permettere che questo sentimento si diffonda ancora, in questo nostro paese. Di certo non si può cancellare il problema con un programma, ne con una legge. Potremmo però ricordarci, almeno una volta, che coloro che vivono con noi sono nostri fratelli, e condividono con noi lo stesso breve istante di vita. Che essi desiderano, come noi, solo la possibilità di vivere la propria vita, con motivazione e felicità, conquistando ogni soddisfazione e ogni realizzazione possibile.
Sicuramente il legame di un destino che ci accomuna, il legame di scopi che ci accomunano, può cominciare a insegnarci qualcosa. Sicuramente possiamo imparare, almeno, a guardare chi ci sta intorno, il nostro prossimo, e possiamo cominciare a lavorare con maggiore impegno per ricucire le ferite che ci sono tra noi e per tornare ad essere fratelli e compatrioti nel cuore.
