After 133 years of construction, the finish line is in sight for the Sagrada Família in Barcelona.
The massive cathedral, one of Barcelona's top tourist attractions, has finally entered the final stage of construction. It’s slated for completion in 2026 — 100 years after its architect, Antoni Gaudí, died in a tram accident.
While 10 years seems like a long time, 30% of the building still needs to be constructed. Six more towers will be added, including a 564-foot central tower that will make the Sagrada Familia the tallest religious building in Europe.

Nearly 150 years after work began, there’s still some way to go for Barcelona’s world-famous Basilica; the Sagrada Família. The plan is for development to culminate by 2026 and this impressive video – combining helicopter footage and computer animation – shows the work planned to take place by then.
Now a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Sagrada Família attracts around three million visitors a year with entrance fees covering most of the €25million a year bill for continuing its construction. Gifts from private donors make up the rest.
Construction work began back in 1882 before Gaudí took over the following year to radically transform the design with his distinctive Gothic and Art Nouveau style.
He was killed by a tram in 1926 and only lived to see a quarter of his masterpiece finished. The design has been led by a succession of architects since, party contributing to the long and drawn out build programme.
CAD techniques are now accelerating things, enabling stone to be carved by milling machines directly from digital information as opposed to laborious hand carving.

One of the most iconic structures ever built, Barcelona's La Sagrada Familia is a unique and fascinating architectural project conceived by Antoni Gaudi in the late 19th century. More than 125 years after construction began, the basilica still remains unfinished. Sagrada: The Mystery of Creation celebrates Gaudi's vision and the continuing work of architects as they strive to complete the colossal project while delving into the process of artistic creation in a historical context.
La Sagrada Familia was commissioned by the Order of St Joseph in 1882. After conflicts arose between the Order and the original architect, 31 year old Antoni Gaudí was hired to complete the design. A devout Catholic and architectural prodigy, Gaudí envisioned a place of worship that combined elements of classic French Gothic style and the curvilinear, organic aspects of the budding Art Nouveau school.
Despite decades of delays, thousands of artisans, laborers, and designers have contributed to the ambitious and glorious landmark. Inspired by Gaudí's vision, the film explores our fundamentally human search for the meaning of existence, and the quest for creative expression.
In the midst of the hustle and bustle of the Catalonian metropolis, the documentary investigates the structural developments of the Sagrada Família while allowing the audience time to observe, perceive, and reflect upon the historical, artistic and personal significance of the basilica.

Sagrada Família is an outstanding temple not only because of its origin and foundation, but due to its purposes as well. Conceived at the XIX century, it is a church grounded on the traditional schemes of the Middle Age cathedrals that Gaudí continuously modified by introducing new building solutions. These solutions were based on ruled geometry and double twist. He enriched it afterwards with sculpture elements that are alluding explicitly to the Christian mystery.
The Temple is currently under construction and, still today, is being built according to the guidelines of its creator, which are supervised by the works director and coordinator, Jordi Faulí. However, construction new technologies are being added. It is expected that the building will be finished by 2026, on the centennial of the architect's death.
As years go by, Sagrada Família has become a Barcelona's identity symbol recognizable at a worldwide stage.

Sagrada Família
The Basílica i Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família (Catalan pronunciation: [səˈɣɾaðə fəˈmiɫiə]; English: Basilica and Expiatory Church of the Holy Family) is a large Roman Catholic church in Barcelona, designed by Spanish architect Antoni Gaudí (1852–1926). Although incomplete, the church is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and in November 2010 Pope Benedict XVI consecrated and proclaimed it a minor basilica, as distinct from a cathedral, which must be the seat of a bishop.
Construction of Sagrada Família had commenced in 1882 and Gaudí became involved in 1883, taking over the project and transforming it with his architectural and engineering style, combining Gothic and curvilinear Art Nouveau forms. Gaudí devoted his last years to the project, and at the time of his death at age 73 in 1926, less than a quarter of the project was complete.
Sagrada Família's construction progressed slowly, as it relied on private donations and was interrupted by the Spanish Civil War, only to resume intermittent progress in the 1950s. Construction passed the midpoint in 2010 with some of the project's greatest challenges remaining and an anticipated completion date of 2026, the centenary of Gaudí's death.

The massive cathedral, one of Barcelona's top tourist attractions, has finally entered the final stage of construction. It’s slated for completion in 2026 — 100 years after its architect, Antoni Gaudí, died in a tram accident.
While 10 years seems like a long time, 30% of the building still needs to be constructed. Six more towers will be added, including a 564-foot central tower that will make the Sagrada Familia the tallest religious building in Europe.

Construction work began back in 1882 before Gaudí took over the following year to radically transform the design with his distinctive Gothic and Art Nouveau style.
He was killed by a tram in 1926 and only lived to see a quarter of his masterpiece finished. The design has been led by a succession of architects since, party contributing to the long and drawn out build programme.
CAD techniques are now accelerating things, enabling stone to be carved by milling machines directly from digital information as opposed to laborious hand carving.

One of the most iconic structures ever built, Barcelona's La Sagrada Familia is a unique and fascinating architectural project conceived by Antoni Gaudi in the late 19th century. More than 125 years after construction began, the basilica still remains unfinished. Sagrada: The Mystery of Creation celebrates Gaudi's vision and the continuing work of architects as they strive to complete the colossal project while delving into the process of artistic creation in a historical context.
La Sagrada Familia was commissioned by the Order of St Joseph in 1882. After conflicts arose between the Order and the original architect, 31 year old Antoni Gaudí was hired to complete the design. A devout Catholic and architectural prodigy, Gaudí envisioned a place of worship that combined elements of classic French Gothic style and the curvilinear, organic aspects of the budding Art Nouveau school.
Despite decades of delays, thousands of artisans, laborers, and designers have contributed to the ambitious and glorious landmark. Inspired by Gaudí's vision, the film explores our fundamentally human search for the meaning of existence, and the quest for creative expression.
In the midst of the hustle and bustle of the Catalonian metropolis, the documentary investigates the structural developments of the Sagrada Família while allowing the audience time to observe, perceive, and reflect upon the historical, artistic and personal significance of the basilica.

In 1883, Antonio Gaudi accepted the commission to continue the construction of the ‘Church Of The Poor’, La Sagrada Familia. Located to the north of Barcelona, this unusual building brought about a return to the teachings of Catholicism and Gaudi devoted the last 40 years of his life to the building that remains, even to this day, unfinished.Completed by Gaudi, the eastern facade is often referred to as the most ingenious sculpture of the century and all four of its facades have been designed to depict the life of the Son of God. The building surprises everyone with its originality yet the main interior is still an enormous building site. The ceiling of the main church is composed of individual sections. The decorative elements contained in the many towers unite to take on the shape of flowers and fruit with subtle screw-shaped columns supporting the ceiling that creates an image of woodland. It is only when comparison is made between Antonio Gaudi’s original plans and sketches and present day progress that it becomes apparent how each design element is today being painstakingly realised. Rather than false beautification, and in order to achieve realism, each of the statues and figures derives from photographs and plaster models posed for ordinary people from the streets of Barcelona. The basilica wasn’t even consecrated until 2010, over a century after construction began in 1882.
This ambitious project is still unfinished, and yet it is already one of Barcelona’s most remarkable pieces of architecture.
The original plans include a total of 18 spires, the completion of which will make the Sagrada Familia the tallest church building in the world.
As it is, there’s already a lot to take in, so set aside plenty of time. You might even want to bring binoculars to get a good look at the details.
See the Nativity facade on the eastern side of the building. It’s divided into three porticos, meant to represent the virtues of hope, faith, and charity, illustrated with statues depicting elements of life and nature. It’s also the oldest of the facades, and is the best representation of Gaudi’s original vision.
The Passion facade on the western side features porticos representing the same virtues as the Nativity facade, but here the depiction is stark and austere, invoking the suffering of the Passion.
Inside, see the light cast by the stained-glass windows, and the hand-carved columns made to resemble trees rising to support the high ceiling.
The Sagrada Família is a stunning combination of Gothic and Art Nouveau architecture, and its beauty and uniqueness makes it one of Barcelona’s most famous landmarks.

We swooned at the soaring towers of the Sagrada Familia, still not complete after more than 130 years, marvelled at the massive concrete cauldron of the Camp Nou football stadium and ooohed at the undulating limestone of La Pedrera ...
