The Joan Miró Foundation opened to the public on 10 June 1975. It had its origins in Miró's first large exhibition in Barcelona, in 1968, at the Antic Hospital de la Santa Creu. Several figures from the world of the arts saw the opportunity to have a space in Barcelona dedicated to the artist's work. However, in accordance with his wishes, the new institution was also to promote and publicise the work of contemporary artists in all its aspects.At a time when artistic and cultural life was certainly minimal, the Foundation brought a refreshing vitality, together with a new, more dynamic concept of an art museum in which Miró's art was shown alongside a wide variety of creative works by other artists - a fact that is reflected in the Foundation's full name of Centre for the Study of Contemporary Art.

Le bâtiment conçu par Josep Lluís Sert est un havre de calme et de douceur fait de grands espaces lumineux. Miro remains one of Mallorca's favourite sons. Although not born on the island he married a Mallorcan and spent over half his life here.
Most of his paintings, sculptures and ceramics now live in American and on mainland Spain but the foundation in Cala Major has a broad cross-section of his work as well as two of his studios.
A must for all fans of surrealism.

Joan Miró i Ferrà (April 20,1893 – December 25,1983) was a world renowned Spanish Catalan painter, sculptor, and ceramist who was born in the sea port city of Barcelona.
Miro was the son of a watchmaking father and a goldsmith mother, he was exposed to the arts from a very young age. There have been some drwaings recovered by Miro dating to 1901, when he was only 8 years old. Miro enrolled at the School of Industrial and Fine Arts in Barcelona until 1910; during his attendance he was taught by Modest Urgell and Josep Pascó.
After overcoming a serious bout of typhoid fever in 1911, Miro decided to devote his life entirely to painting by attending the school of art taught by Francesc Galí. He studied at La Lonja School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, and in 1918 set up his first individual exhibition in the Dalmau Galleries, in the same city. His works before 1920 (the date of his first trip to Paris) reflect the influence of different trends, like the pure and brilliant colors used in Fauvism, shapes taken from cubism, influences from folkloric Catalan art and Roman frescos from the churches.
His trip to Paris introduced him to and developed his trend of surrealist painting. In 1921, he showed his first individual exhibition in Paris, at La Licorne Gallery. In 1928, he exhibited with a group of surrealists in the Pierre Gallery, also in Paris, although Miró was always to maintain his independent qualities with respect to groups and ideologies.
From 1929-1930, Miró began to take interest in the object as such, in the form of collages. This was a practice which was to lead to his making of surrealist sculptures. His tormented monsters appeared during this decade, which gave way to the consolidation of his plastic vocabulary. He also experimented with many other artistic forms, such as engraving, lithography, water colors, pastels, and painting over copper. What is particularly highlighted from this period, are the two ceramic murals which he made for the UNESCO building in Paris (The Wall of the Moon and the Wall of the Sun, 1957-59).

It was at the end of the 60´s when his final period was marked and which lasted until his death. During this time, he concentrated more and more on monumental and public works. He was characterized by the body language and freshness with which he carried out his canvasses, as well as the special attention he paid to material and the stamp he received from informalism. He concentrated his interest on the symbol, not giving too much importance to the representing theme, but to the way the symbol emerged as the piece of work. Miro had a very eccentric style that is the embodiment of his unique approach to his artwork.
In 1976 the Joan Miró Foundation Centre of Contemporary Art Study was officially opened in the city of Barcelona and in 1979, four years before his death, he was named Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Barcelona.

Joan Miró
Joan Miró i Ferrà (Catalan: [ʒuˈan miˈɾo]; 20 April 1893 – 25 December 1983) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, and ceramicist born in Barcelona. A museum dedicated to his work, the Fundació Joan Miró, was established in his native city of Barcelona in 1975, and another, the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró, was established in his adoptive city of Palma de Mallorca in 1981.
Earning international acclaim, his work has been interpreted as Surrealism, a sandbox for the subconscious mind, a re-creation of the childlike, and a manifestation of Catalan pride. In numerous interviews dating from the 1930s onwards, Miró expressed contempt for conventional painting methods as a way of supporting bourgeois society, and famously declared an "assassination of painting" in favour of upsetting the visual elements of established painting.
Biography
Born into the families of a goldsmith and a watch maker, Miró grew up in the Barri Gòtic neighborhood of Barcelona. His father was Miquel Miró Adzerias and his mother was Dolors Ferrà. He began drawing classes at the age of seven at a private school at Carrer del Regomir 13, a medieval mansion. In 1907 he enrolled at the fine art academy at La Llotja, to the dismay of his father. He studied at the Cercle Artístic de Sant Lluc and he had his first solo show in 1918 at the Dalmau Gallery, where his work was ridiculed and defaced. Inspired by Cubist and surrealist exhibitions from abroad, Miró was drawn towards the arts community that was gathering in Montparnasse and in 1920 moved to Paris, but continued to spend his summers in Catalonia.

Joan Miró i Ferrà (April 20,1893 – December 25,1983) was a world renowned Spanish Catalan painter, sculptor, and ceramist who was born in the sea port city of Barcelona.
Miro was the son of a watchmaking father and a goldsmith mother, he was exposed to the arts from a very young age. There have been some drwaings recovered by Miro dating to 1901, when he was only 8 years old. Miro enrolled at the School of Industrial and Fine Arts in Barcelona until 1910; during his attendance he was taught by Modest Urgell and Josep Pascó.
After overcoming a serious bout of typhoid fever in 1911, Miro decided to devote his life entirely to painting by attending the school of art taught by Francesc Galí. He studied at La Lonja School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, and in 1918 set up his first individual exhibition in the Dalmau Galleries, in the same city. His works before 1920 (the date of his first trip to Paris) reflect the influence of different trends, like the pure and brilliant colors used in Fauvism, shapes taken from cubism, influences from folkloric Catalan art and Roman frescos from the churches.
His trip to Paris introduced him to and developed his trend of surrealist painting. In 1921, he showed his first individual exhibition in Paris, at La Licorne Gallery. In 1928, he exhibited with a group of surrealists in the Pierre Gallery, also in Paris, although Miró was always to maintain his independent qualities with respect to groups and ideologies.
From 1929-1930, Miró began to take interest in the object as such, in the form of collages. This was a practice which was to lead to his making of surrealist sculptures. His tormented monsters appeared during this decade, which gave way to the consolidation of his plastic vocabulary. He also experimented with many other artistic forms, such as engraving, lithography, water colors, pastels, and painting over copper. What is particularly highlighted from this period, are the two ceramic murals which he made for the UNESCO building in Paris (The Wall of the Moon and the Wall of the Sun, 1957-59).

It was at the end of the 60´s when his final period was marked and which lasted until his death. During this time, he concentrated more and more on monumental and public works. He was characterized by the body language and freshness with which he carried out his canvasses, as well as the special attention he paid to material and the stamp he received from informalism. He concentrated his interest on the symbol, not giving too much importance to the representing theme, but to the way the symbol emerged as the piece of work. Miro had a very eccentric style that is the embodiment of his unique approach to his artwork.
In 1976 the Joan Miró Foundation Centre of Contemporary Art Study was officially opened in the city of Barcelona and in 1979, four years before his death, he was named Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Barcelona.

Generally thought of as a Surrealist because of his interest in automatism and the use of sexual symbols (for example, ovoids with wavy lines emanating from them), Miró's style was influenced in varying degrees by Surrealism and Dada, yet he rejected membership to any artistic movement in the interwar European years. André Breton, the founder of Surrealism, described him as "the most Surrealist of us all." Miró confessed to creating one of his most famous works, Harlequin's Carnival, under similar circumstances: "How did I think up my drawings and my ideas for painting? Well I'd come home to my Paris studio in Rue Blomet at night, I'd go to bed, and sometimes I hadn't any supper. I saw things, and I jotted them down in a notebook. I saw shapes on the ceiling..."
In 1926, he collaborated with Max Ernst on designs for Sergei Diaghilev. With Miró's help, Ernst pioneered the technique of grattage, in which he troweled pigment onto his canvases. Miró married Pilar Juncosa in Palma de Mallorca on October 12, 1929; their daughter Dolores was born July 17, 1931. Shuzo Takiguchi published the first monograph on Miró in 1940. In 1959, André Breton asked Miró to represent Spain in The Homage to Surrealism exhibition together with works by Enrique Tábara, Salvador Dalí, and Eugenio Granell.
By not becoming an official member of the Surrealists, Miró was free to experiment with any artistic style that he wished without compromising his position within the group and being accused of not being a "true" Surrealist. He pursued his own interests in the art world, both within and between groups which politicked and jockeyed for prominence. Miró's artistic autonomy, in that he did not adhere to any one particular style, is reflected in his work and his willingness to work with several media.
In an interview with biographer Walter Erben, Miró expressed his dislike for art critics, saying, they "are more concerned with being philosophers than anything else. They form a preconceived opinion, then they look at the work of art. Painting merely serves as a cloak in which to wrap their emaciated philosophical systems."
Joan Miró won several awards in his lifetime. In 1958 he was given the Venice Biennale print making prize, in May 1959 the Guggenheim International Award, and in 1980 he received the Gold Medal of Fine Arts from King Juan Carlos of Spain.

Joan Miró i Ferrà (April 20, 1893 December 25, 1983) was a Spanish Catalan painter, sculptor, and ceramist born in Barcelona.
Earning international acclaim, his work has been interpreted as Surrealism, a sandbox for the subconscious mind, a re-creation of the childlike, and a manifestation of Catalan pride. In numerous interviews dating from the 1930s onwards, Miró expressed contempt for conventional painting methods as a way of supporting bourgeoise society, and famously declared an "assassination of painting" in favor of upsetting the visual elements of established painting.

'Joan Miró and the Artigases: A Phantasmagoric World of Living Monsters' - Jed Morse, Chief Curator, Nasher Sculpture Center In this presentation, Jed Morse discusses the freedom Joan Miró experienced when returning to Spain, and investing in his ceramics practice which he saw as expressive of elemental, formative, childhood experiences which allowed his to re-connect with his creativity without mediation. This is in comparison to his painting practice which Miró felt was grounded in the cerebral, and best undertaken in the city. Between 1954 and 1956, Miro worked with renowned ceramicist Joseph Lorenz Artigas to produce around 230 unique sculptures which were painted and drew from both prehistoric and surrealist visual culture...

Julia Calfee. American-born photographer Julia Calfee has spent most of her professional life living and working in Europe, and is fluent in French. She majored in journalism at NYU and studied art history at the Sorbonne in Paris. Her first book, Photogénèse, was published by the Joan Miro Foundation. From 1996 to 2002, she focused on Mongolia, where she led a caravan to bring medicine to remote areas. During this time she also documented life in Mongolian prisons for a relief organization, and photographed the blight of poverty in Ulan Bator. In this presentation, Jed Morse discusses the freedom Joan Miró experienced when returning to Spain, and investing in his ceramics practice which he saw as expressive of elemental, formative, childhood experiences which allowed his to re-connect with his creativity without mediation. This is in comparison to his painting practice which Miró felt was grounded in the cerebral, and best undertaken in the city. Between 1954 and 1956, Miro worked with renowned ceramicist Joseph Lorenz Artigas to produce around 230 unique sculptures which were painted and drew from both prehistoric and surrealist visual cultures.
Organized to coincide with the public opening of the exhibition 'Return to Earth: Ceramic Sculpture of Fontana, Melotti, Miró, Noguchi, and Picasso, 1943–1963', this symposium offers a number of new perspectives on the often-overlooked, yet ground-breaking work in fired clay of some of the most important artists of the 20th century.

Jed Morse joined the staff of the Nasher Sculpture Center in 2002 as Assistant Curator where he has organized, overseen, or assisted with numerous exhibitions. Morse received his B.A. with honors in art history in 1994 from Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont. Prior to receiving his M.A. in Modern Art History from the University of Texas at Austin in 2001, Morse served as curatorial intern at the National Museum of American Art (now Smithsonian American Art Museum) in Washington, D.C. and curatorial assistant at the Dallas Museum of Art. In addition to his duties at the Nasher Sculpture Center, Mr. Morse has contributed to exhibition projects, such as 'Barcelona and Modernity: Picasso, Gaudí, Miró, Dalí '(Cleveland Museum of Art and Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 2006), and has lectured widely on a variety of topics.
The Nasher Sculpture Center’s ongoing 360 Speaker Series features conversations and lectures on the ever-expanding definition of sculpture. Guests are invited to witness first-hand accounts of the inspiration behind some of the world’s most innovative artwork, architecture and design.

Julia Calfee. American-born photographer Julia Calfee has spent most of her professional life living and working in Europe, and is fluent in French. The experiences with the shaman were published in a limited-edition catalogue called Mountains Spirits of Mongolia, published by the Richard Liu Foundation. In 2003, Spirits and Ghosts: Journeys Through Mongolia was published by PowerHouse, New York. This book explores the transitions and changes in Mongolia since 1996, touching upon the obstinate ritual and beliefs of this country still steeped in the murkiness of the post- Communist era, and awkwardly adapting to a new democratic system. A series of exhibitions followed these publications in New York, London, Paris, Milan and Brussels.
She then began to photograph what she refers to as the New China, which has included documenting the private lives of a new class of people who are suddenly extremely wealthy as well as the urbanscapes that have arisen with the overall economic changes of recent years. She has also documented the new contemporary art scene in Beijing, principally the 798 Factory, and has spent time in the northwest and southwest of China, where Central Asian influence still dominates despite the march of Chinese influence ever westward. In these areas she also found evidence of a never-changing China, where some groups of people hold on to ways of life seemingly unaltered since 1,000 years ago. Julia Calfee. American-born photographer Julia Calfee has spent most of her professional life living and working in Europe, and is fluent in French. She majored in journalism at NYU and studied art history at the Sorbonne in Paris. Her first book, Photogénèse, was published by the Joan Miro Foundation.
From 1996 to 2002, she focused on Mongolia, where she led a caravan to bring medicine to remote areas. During this time she also documented life in Mongolian prisons for a relief organization, and photographed the blight of poverty in Ulan Bator. Over these years she also took pictures of traditional reindeer herders in the north, particularly one female shaman. The experiences with the shaman were published in a limited-edition catalogue called Mountains Spirits of Mongolia, published by the Richard Liu Foundation. In 2003, Spirits and Ghosts: Journeys Through Mongolia was published by PowerHouse, New York. This book explores the transitions and changes in Mongolia since 1996, touching upon the obstinate ritual and beliefs of this country still steeped in the murkiness of the post- Communist era, and awkwardly adapting to a new democratic system. A series of exhibitions followed these publications in New York, London, Paris, Milan and Brussels.
She then began to photograph what she refers to as the New China, which has included documenting the private lives of a new class of people who are suddenly extremely wealthy as well as the urbanscapes that have arisen with the overall economic changes of recent years. She has also documented the new contemporary art scene in Beijing, principally the 798 Factory, and has spent time in the northwest and southwest of China, where Central Asian influence still dominates despite the march of Chinese influence ever westward. In these areas she also found evidence of a never-changing China, where some groups of people hold on to ways of life seemingly unaltered since 1,000 years ago.
