ROASTING RACISM: In Down Under director Abe Forsythe uses comedy to ridicule the racism behind the Cronulla riots.
When Abe Forsythe first saw the footage of the 2005 Cronulla Beach riots he was in Britain and could scarcely believe his eyes.
A violent clash between Muslim and Aussie youths, the prolonged confrontation served as a flashpoint for the growing sense of post-9/11 unease about Muslims in the community, even those who had peacefully lived here for decades.
Forsythe was both homesick for Sydney, where he was born, and sickened by what he saw. Was this Australia? he wondered.
In his cutting satirical comedy Down Under, Forsythe pits a carload of Aussie rednecks against a carload of Muslim thickheads to expose the obscenity of violence and prejudice that fuelled the fighting.
Eager to use the power of comedy to drill into issues such as peer pressure, bigotry, and ignorance, Forsythe had no idea the film's release would be so timely.
The film's incendiary subject matter has resulted in a torrent of online abuse, yet Forsythe insists the movie is reaching out to increase understanding, intending to temper the debate and inform conversation, not inflame shouting matches.
Here he discusses the Down Under in detail, admits to its limitations and his hope that it does some good. He also discusses the creative help he has received in promoting the film and the sad lack of resources he had to market it, which remains an on-going problem for Australian film.
The film screens as the Centrepiece Gala at MIFF 7pm tonight (Saturday, 6 August) at the Comedy Theatre and as an open-caption screening at 7pm at the Kino. Down Under opens nationwide Thursday 11 August.

Abe Forsythe
Abe Forsythe (born Abraham Forsythe on 26 July 1981) is an Australian film and television actor, director, writer and producer. He is the son of actor and comedian Drew Forsythe.
Career
He first appeared on the TV series The Miraculous Mellops. He has since appeared as Campbell Todd on the Australian TV series Always Greener, starred in the mini-series Marking Time and starred and directed the 2003 film Ned. He also directed and starred in a parody of The Matrix called Computer Boy. Forsythe has also written a number of acclaimed sketches for the late night sketch comedy series Comedy Inc - The Late Shift. He also starred in the Australian/British television series co-production Tripping Over.
Forsythe has also guest starred in several Australian TV shows, including Blue Heelers, All Saints, Water Rats and Blue Water High.
In 2009, Forsythe wrote and directed the Tropfest short Being Carl Williams. The short won second prize and the Best Comedy award. The 2010 Tropfest saw him win first prize with Shock, a short tribute to Radio Personality Kyle Sandilands.

Metro has often been appalled by the bloated budgets of Hollywood blockbusters. Now an 18-year-old film-maker from Newtown has laid bare Tinsel Town's shameless profligacy by making his own version of The Matrix - which was rumoured to have cost more than $100 million - for $2,500(AUS)! Forsythe, who has seen The Matrix three times, was inspired by spoofs of The Blair Witch Project and his own irritation at Matrix audiences who ooh-ed and aah-ed when they recognised chunks of their own city on the silver screen.
He admits he had to cut a few corners to bring Computer Boy in under budget. Besides writing and directing, he took on the role of Agent Smith, the character played by Hugo Weaving in the original.
"I played him as a mixture of Hugh Grant, Dr Evil and Sean Connery," says Forsythe.
Morpheus, the mysterious cyber-guerilla played by Laurence Fishburne, is portrayed by Marcus Pointon. Forsythe says the resemblance is eerie. "He looks just like Fishburne except he's white and from New Zealand."
Not content with paying homage to The Matrix, Forsythe aimed to enhance the original plot. While the original Matrix has neither a chase sequence involving a Wilderness Society koala or action filmed covertly in McDonalds, Computer Boy has them both.

SINÓPSIS
Aníbal, un hombre bueno, un tanto extrovertido y fanfarrón, recoge una noche de tormenta a una mujer, Celestina, quien aparentemente está perdida en una esquina. Y está embarazada, buscando al tipo que la dejó en ese estado "Un hombre muy hermoso, y muy deshonesto", explica ella. Tras ofrecerle refugio por esa noche, Aníbal descubre gradualmente que ella procede de alguna zona inusitada de la realidad. Para ella, el tiempo no corre igual que para la demás gente, ni el tiempo la trata a ella igual que a los demás. Y llega Nelson, el hermano menor de Aníbal, sólo para sucumbir también al embrujo de Celestina. Y el tiempo pasa. Sólo que no pasa.
