Today, those same families have access to treatment because of Seguro Popular. Our client (and friend) Susan Bachelder recently has a stem cell implant procedure to help fix her neck, which was badly injured in a car accident 10 years ago. The stem cell procedure, which is not legal in either the United States or Canada, can only be categorized as a major success - she went from being largely immobile and house bound from pain to normal everyday function... almost overnight.
To those who say it's too good to be true, I can only say that I saw it with my own eyes - I've known Susan for over 2 years and what I saw a couple days after the stem cell procedure was nothing short of a medical miracle. She was a new person in the flesh - able to walk down the beach, climb pyramids and enjoy life - a stark difference to the woman I knew who could barely walk half a block before doubling over in pain.
This is one of the biggest reasons that medical tourism to Mexico is so popular. The prices are much cheaper than in the United States or Canada and the healthcare facilities are first class. The doctors, by and large, are US educated and medical tourism is thriving. People are coming here for a variety of procedures - from cosmetic surgery to hip replacements and everything in-between - including amazing dental work at great prices. Plus, you get a vacation out of the deal!

Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula may well be where the world as we know it began. It’s here that a meteor 10 kilometres across impacted with the earth 65 million years ago; The meteor hit in a shallow ocean bringing about a change in climate that caused the extinction of two thirds of the Earths species including all the Dinosaurs.

Travel video about destination Mexico.
Mexico, land of the Maya and Aztec, temples and beaches and with a population of twenty-six million the bubbling metropolis of Mexico City is a maze of streets, flat roofs, skyscrapers and parks. Earthquakes, floods and civil wars created this ‘City Of The Aztecs’. Templo Mayor, the main temple of the Aztecs, lies in the centre of the city, in the large main square, Zocalo. The magnificent Catedral Metropolitana with its massive dimensions and fine stone masonry dominates the square, with equal prominence being given to the Palacinio Nacional, governmental seat of the Mexican President. In 1519, when the Spanish conquerors reached Tenochtitlan, capital of the Aztec kingdom, they discovered a lagoon paradise with floating gardens, Xochimilco, a labyrinth of lakes and canals, which today can be explored by boat. Known as the Pearl Of The Pacific, Acapulco is a world famous holiday resort of the rich and famous where luxury liners dock each day and endless golden sands beckon a swim under the Caribbean sun. Each evening, the famous cliff jumpers of Acapulco congregate when, from a height of 42 metres, they jump fearlessly from the top of the La Quebrada Cliff into the narrow bay below. In the legendary ruins of Palenque, numerous monuments of the Maya culture can be found such as a palace, and several pyramids and temples. From the air, there is a unique view of the lush growth of the impenetrable forests around Palenque, and of Mexico’s most beautiful waterfalls of Agua Azul. Chichen Itza is thought to have been built by the Mayas around 450 AD and over 500 years later the fighting TOLTEKEN took over the deserted city, which led to two hundred years of prosperity. Located in the north, Tequila is situated at the foot of the likewise named volcano and is world famous because it is here that the Mexican national drink is produced. But Mexico is much more than a drink…it is a feast for all the senses!

Surrounded by the warm waters of the Yucatan Peninsula, Cancun is famed for its sunshine, history, and wild nightlife. Come to this former Mexican fishing village turned resort town to join legions of fellow sun worshippers – just don’t forget to pack sunscreen.
Your Cancun tour should stop at the Acuario Interactivo, where you can meet mariachi-singing dolphins and other friendly sealife. Explore the vast historical offerings of Cancun by heading to the Yucatan interior, where you’ll find ancient Mayan cities available to tour. A day trip to Chichen Itza, one of the world’s Seven Modern Wonders, is another must. Wander through its ancient streets and take in the temples, an observatory, and even a sporting arena.
At sunset, your Cancun sightseeing will come to a dazzling conclusion amid the wild nightlife. Watch shows, go dancing, attend parties, and make sure you’ve got your camera out. It all begins anew the next day; morning in Cancun means more time to make sun-drenched memories that will last a lifetime.

Travel video about destination Mexico City in Mexico.
Mexico City is a vivid metropolis and cosmopolitan city situated on a plateau in the central highlands at an altitude of 2, 286 metres, where the food is spicy and the Tequila flows freely! The city's fascinating history is reflected in both its art and architecture with age old charm, Indian roots and elegant buildings.
Until the Spanish conquest, the Templo Mayor was the setting of coronations and human sacrifice. The remains of the walls within which thousands of priests once lived are only a few steps from the buildings of the country's former Spanish conquerors.
Construction of the country's largest cathedral, the Catedral Metropolitana, took 250 years. The lower section is quite plain but the upper section is of Baroque and Neo-Classical design. Spanish administrative buildings and private houses in the heart of the city have replaced the temples of ancient Mexico and has resulted in a synthesis of both old and new architectural styles.
An elevator ascends the Torre Latino America, an earthquake-proof tower that was built in 1958. A viewing platform provides a wonderful panoramic view that includes the Palacio de Bellas Artes and the Juárez Monument.
Located 50 kilometres from Mexico City are the ancient remains of Teotihuacan that was once a centre of trade, art and ritual ceremonies. At its zenith in 500 A.D., it was as large as Rome and its Sun Pyramid is one of the greatest building achievements of ancient times. In 1988 ,Unesco attributed this complex as being 'one of the most important cultural centres of mankind'.
The author Pablo Neruda once said: 'No other land on Earth possesses such remarkable human profoundness than Mexico and its inhabitants'. For surprises, sights and history galore, Mexico has to be at the top of the list!

Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula may well be where the world as we know it began. It’s here that a meteor 10 kilometres across impacted with the earth 65 million years ago; The meteor hit in a shallow ocean bringing about a change in climate that caused the extinction of two thirds of the Earths species including all the Dinosaurs.

http://bookinghunter.com
Riviera Maya , also known as the Mayan Riviera, is a tourism district following the coastal Highway 307 which parallels the Caribbean coastline of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, located on the eastern portion of the Yucatán Peninsula. This district historically started at the city of Playa del Carmen and ended at the village of Tulum, although the towns of Puerto Morelos situated to the north and between Playa del Carmen and Cancun as well as the town of Felipe Carrillo Puerto situated 40 kilometres (25 mi) to the south of Tulum are both currently being promoted as part of the Riviera Maya tourist corridor.
The most important places to visit in Riviera Maya are: Chichen Itza (the world famous Mayan ruins with thousands of years of history are one of the most visited sites in the world), Playa del Carmen, Tulum (outside of Cancun, a unique site. You can go for a swim in turquoise waters and visit the famous ruins of Mayan civilization), Xcaret, Xplor and many more.
This video offers a lot of tips to help you plan the perfect vacation. If you want to save time and money, the most important Riviera Maya travel tip is to compare prices before booking a hotel room or a flight. You can do this for free on http://bookinghunter.com, a site that searches through hundreds of other travel websites in real time for the best travel deals available.

STORY: Melinda Gates, co-founder of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, was in Mexico City on Monday (October 19) for the Global Maternal Newborn Health Conference to discuss the strategies and actions needed to meet the development goals for children and women which were launched at the United Nations earlier this year.
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is the world's largest private philanthropy organisation, with a $40 billion endowment. It aims to tackle disease and poverty in the developing world. Bill Gates earned his billions as co-founder of Microsoft.
Among one of the regional initiatives supported by the foundation is the Mesoamerica Health Initiative, which is a public-private partnership formed under the umbrella goal of "every woman every child" that aims to provide healthcare to society's poorest.
"We're supporting governments to improve the lives of the poorest 20 percent of the population in seven countries in Central America and the state of Chiapas here in Mexico. Today, almost two million women and children are directly benefiting from the care and treatment they get at better equipped health facilities," declared Gates.
Gates argues that improved healthcare makes economic sense for countries, with people better able to invest in their education and gainful employment.
"Better health leads to better education which leads to better economic opportunities which leads to broader prosperity for communities and countries," she added.
The conference brings together more than 1,000 policymakers, researchers, practitioners and advocates from 75 countries with final report recommendations to be submitted for global action.
Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Babatunde Osotimehin, told delegates that investing in better women's health can bring about the world's next great female leaders.
"With the change that you would actually see these girls being the leaders in the issue of climate change, being the leaders in the issues of technology transfer, being the leaders in the issues that deal with our social systems," said Osotimehin.
Globally, the statistics for women surviving childbirth and babies making it through their early years are better than ever before, according to the conference. However, more than 800 women and 7,400 newborns still die from preventable health complications.

At this central California vineyard -- the race is on to protect migrant workers from getting and spreading the H1N1 virus.
[Notes:NATS -- SPANISH LECTURE ON SWINE FLU]
During the next few months -- the number of agricultural workers in the U.S. is likely to grow substantially -- with many of these workers coming from Mexico.
Authorities say the influx of workers will only add to the challenge of keeping the virus under control.
[Notes:SOT -- JUAN MANEUL MORAN/UNITED FARM WORKERS]
they have relatives in Mexico...and they came from Mexico to visit the workers...that's why I need to be sure they know how to deal with this flu.
[Notes:VO -- SHOTS OF WORKERS]
In addition to encouraging these farm workers to wash their hands --and cover their mouths when they cough -- word is also going out to workers at factories and construction sites.
Teresa Serreno has two daughters in Mexico. She worries about what's happening south of the border -- and how easily the virus can spread.
[Notes:SOT --TERESA SERRENO/MIGRANT WORKER]
right away I make a call and say...because it's not only in Mexico...different places....but more in Mexico.
[Notes:VO -- FIELD HANDS WORKING]
The Mexican consulate and local health organizations in California are mounting an outreach campaign aimed at preventing the illness in isolated communities where there is no doctor.
And health care workers will fan out and tell these field workers not only how to fight the swine flu -- but where to get medical care if it strikes.

New Mexico Dental Health Care Professional Shortage Third Greatest in Nation

According to 2012 Bloomberg data, New Mexico has the third worst dental care professional shortage in the nation- following Mississippi and Louisiana. Almost 40 percent of New Mexicans live in a Dental Desert –an area where there is a shortage of dental health care professionals. Some advocates are pushing the state to allow dental therapists to perform basic procedures now done by dentists. While this could improve access to dental care some dentists say it would risk safety and the quality of care.
Every morning after Maria Alvarez flosses and brushes her teeth- she dulls the pain of the two cavity ridden molars throbbing on each side of her mouth… with cooking cloves she soaks in water- she says it is an old Mexican remedy she learned in Chihuahua, before she moved to Anthony New Mexico.
“It is a small herb that serves like an anesthetic. So if you have pain you place it on the molar that has a hole or and it stays there and then you bite the clove when you chew it and it starts too anesthize that place and it will take the pain away” Alvarez said.
Alvarez hasn’t always had to resort to old Mexican remedies to deal with tooth pain that keeps her awake at night- and aches through her shifts at work. Alvarez, like many New Mexicans living near the border, used to cross into Juarez- with her two sons and husband to get dental work done.
“It is better to go to Juarez. Because over here I don’t have enough money for the consultation“ Alavarez said.
But the drug war that engulfed Juarez and much of the state of Chihuahua took the lives of a number of Alvarez’s family and friends- and she doesn’t ever want to go back or relive the suffering- she says the tales of her friends being attacked and threatened, even when they were just there for dental work- are still on her mind.
“They went to the dentists and the violence entered the place where they and they assaulted some people, they were scared and threw themselves on the ground and I’m scared, that’s why I don’t go to Juarez” Alavaerez said.
Since the Affordable Care Act went into effect Alavarez’s two sons been able to access better dental treatment. But as an adult Alvarez says her insurance doesn’t cover enough of the cost for her to go to a dentist in New Mexico.
Health Action New Mexico policy director Pam Blackwell says close to 40% of New Mexicans are living in dental health care professional shortage areas or “dental deserts”. Where basic preventive care is less accessible and basic dental issues are more likely to turn into major health issues like heart diseases.
“We have absolutely an oral health crisis" Blackwell said.
Modeled on programs dental therapist programs in Minnesota and Alaska Health Action New Mexico is pushing policy to fill the gap.
While New Mexico already has dental hygienists a dental therapists program would be license to perform other basic procedures.
“They would be able to fill cavities they would be able to do basic extraction, they would be able to take radiographs - and also really diagnose within a dental therapists scope of practice, so it is really routine in basic care” Blackwell said.
President elect of the New Mexico Dental Association Dentist Dr. Michael Law is concerned about some of the procedures dental therapists would be able to use on patients after 24 months of training without direct supervision.
“A dentist doesn’t even have to be in the same area for them to be able to perform things like surgery it is just dangerous! If something were to go wrong with that surgery and they don’t know how to handle it, I am 200 miles away from them” Law said.
A 2014 report by the Minnesota legislature on that state’s program found that “Dentist therapists appear to be practicing safely, and clinics reported high patient satisfaction with dental therapist services” But the study acknowledges the program and “the profession is still in its infancy". Law says it is too soon to draw c
onclusions. The Minnesota’s program has been place for 4 years.
He says a better way to improve access and affordability would be to raise the state Medicaid reimbursement- currently less than half of New Mexico dentists are taking patients on Medicaid.
“The reason I do not is purely and simply because the reimbursement is so poor, we couldn’t function. I mean we couldn’t do what we do every day on that. Now if they were to raise it and reevaluate it and possibly be able to start accepting it and providing care for those patients” Law said.
Blackwell says doctors put up the same opposition to licensing nurse practitioners and physician assistants to perform functions that were once only performed by medical doctors.
“It is turf and unfortunately what happens in these turf arguments is that consumers are forgotten, patients are forgotten and those communities who are underserved are forgotten”

Hi everyone!
This is yesterday's Interview with Azteca America about SOM
Salud y Orgullo Mexicano (SOM), which means “Mexican health and pride,” aims to remove barriers to HIV testing and care for people of Mexican descent, the largest subset of the Latino population in Chicago. The project works to connect Mexican men to services at Erie Family Health Center in Humboldt Park (2750 West North Avenue), home of the Lending Hands for Life program which offers a range of services from HIV testing and medical care to emotional support.
Latinos are disproportionately affected by HIV; they make up 16 percent of the U.S. population, but account for 21 percent of new HIV infections.[1] When it comes to HIV testing, Latinos face three major obstacles: lack of access to health care, fear of stigma, and low perception of HIV risk. And once they are diagnosed with HIV, barriers to treatment often include lack of health insurance, difficulty navigating the U.S. health care system, and a shortage of culturally competent health care facilities.
“We know that Latinos who recently immigrated to the United States are more likely to be diagnosed late in the course of their HIV infection than those who are more assimilated or were born in the U.S.,” said Roman Buenrostro, Director of Special Projects at AFC. “That’s why it wasn’t enough for our ads to simply be in Spanish; we designed them to resonate culturally with Mexican men to get their attention. We hope they do just that.”
The initiative is one of ten Special Projects of National Significance funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to improve health outcomes among Latinos who are vulnerable to contracting HIV or living with the disease. All of the projects take a “transnational approach,” meaning their health programs are tailored to the specific culture or place of origin of the Latino population they aim to reach.
In Chicago, the SOM project is getting the word out through 50 Spanish-language and bilingual bus shelter ads that put a twist on iconic imagery from the colorful cards used in lotería, a bingo-style game played by Mexican families in their homes since the late 1800s.
In one ad, the lotería card for El Valiente (the Brave One) is reimagined as a man who takes care of his health for his family. Another illustrates the challenge of life with HIV through a mix of cards and declares, “Erie can help you win the game.” There’s even an ad tailored for the gay, bisexual and transgender community with a headline that reads, “no matter what card you hold, all are welcome at Erie.”
The marketing campaign also includes lotería-themed public service announcements on La Que Buena (WOJO 105.1 FM) and La Tremenda (WRTO 1200 AM) that began airing Oct. 1. The PSAs were produced pro bono by Static Studios, a Chicago-based sound design studio.
All of the materials were developed this summer after focus group discussions with Mexican men from different age groups, socioeconomic backgrounds, and sexual orientations. The men shared their experiences navigating the health care system and bridging between the Mexican and American cultures. As a result, each ad has a bold color (to grab attention) and lists key services (to reduce perceived barriers to care): free and confidential HIV testing; easy to schedule appointments; bilingual/bicultural staff; no questions asked about legal status; high-quality HIV care regardless of ability to pay; counseling, psychiatry and support groups; dental and substance abuse treatment; respectful atmosphere.
“Lotería is a game of chance, but we want Mexican men to know that they don’t have to gamble with their health,” said Dr. Gail Patrick, Site Medical Director for Erie. “Finding a regular home for your health needs, like our clinic in Humboldt Park, and coming in even before you feel sick for preventive care will increase your odds of living a long and healthy life.”
The SOM bus shelter ads hit the streets on Sept. 30 and are concentrated in or near community areas with significant Mexican populations: Lower West Side (Pilsen), South Lawndale (Little Village), Humboldt Park, West Town, Avondale, Edgewater, Near West Side, Brighton Park, Gage Park. The ads and radio PSAs will each run for two months.

Speakers: Dr. Gabriela Soto Laveaga (University of California Santa Barbara, USA) & Dr Amalia Del Riego Abreu (Department Health Systems and Services, PAHO/WHO)
In the late 1970s the Mexican government proposed a poverty alleviation program that would focus on the health of the nation's poor and rural. Though poverty alleviation projects were not new, the focus on health was a novel approach for Mexico because it challenged how policy makers and local officials understood poverty and health. A tenet of the program, for example, was to rely on the wealth of local healing practices, especially in resource scarce areas, and insure that physicians interacted with local healers. In this seminar, Dr Soto Laveaga's presentation examines the social origins of the rural health care program, its immediate challenges and surprising successes, and its untimely demise linked to 1980s global economic reforms.
Dr. Amalia Del Riego discusses the issue with reference to the Region of the Americas, highlighting recent efforts for health systems transformation to expand coverage of services and improve health systems performance, based on the renewed commitment to Primary Health Care. She discusses the challenges and opportunities, in the context of the commitment of Member States with Universal Health Coverage.

Peter Anyang' Nyong'o, former Minister of Medical Services for Kenya, spoke at the Harvard School of Public Health as part of the Decision-making: Voices from the Field leadership discussion series November 14, 2013. Watch the entire series at http://hsph.me/voices.
The Decision-making: Voices from the Field webcast leadership discussion series at Harvard School of Public Health invites leaders to speak about their experiences making decisions that affect global health. Highly interactive and candid, the series is produced in The Leadership Studio for a student audience. The high-definition webcast is streamed live and posted for future viewing. Students learn from experienced leaders about decisions that were effective, decisions that failed, and which decisions, if any, could have been made differently.
Professor Peter Anyang' Nyong'o has taught at the University of Nairobi, El Colegio de Mexico, and Addis Ababa University, and joined the African Academy of Sciences as Head of Programs from 1987 to 1992. Having been involved in the struggle against authoritarian rule in Kenya throughout his academic career, Professor Anyang' Nyong'o was among the leaders who made a break through into multiple party politics in 1992. He was then elected to Parliament in that year and has served in various capacities since then. He was Minister for Planning and National Development from 2003 to 2005 and Minister for Medical Services from 2008 to 2013. He is currently the Senator for Kisumu County. Professor Anyang' Nyong'o has published several books and articles on democracy, democratisation, the state and the political economy of development in Africa. In 1995 he was awarded the German-African Award for his contribution to democracy and democratization in Africa. Professor Anyang' Nyong'o is serving as a Brundtland Senior Leadership Fellow at the Harvard School of Public Health in Fall 2013.

Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama Discuss Health Care Insurance Coverage (2013)

Health care in the United States is provided by many distinct organizations. Health care facilities are largely owned and operated by private sector businesses. 62% of the hospitals are non-profit, 20% are government owned, 18% are for-profit.
60--65% of healthcare provision and spending comes from programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, TRICARE, the Children's Health Insurance Program, and the Veterans Health Administration. Most of the population under 67 is insured by their or a family member's employer, some buy health insurance on their own, and the remainder are uninsured. Health insurance for public sector employees is primarily provided by the government.
The United States life expectancy of 78.4 years at birth, up from 75.2 years in 1990, ranks it 50th among 221 nations, and 27th out of the 34 industrialized OECD countries, down from 20th in 1990. Of 17 high-income countries studied by the National Institutes of Health in 2013, the United States had the highest or near-highest prevalence of infant mortality, heart and lung disease, sexually transmitted infections, adolescent pregnancies, injuries, homicides, and disability. Together, such issues place the U.S. at the bottom of the list for life expectancy. On average, a U.S. male can be expected to live almost four fewer years than those in the top-ranked country.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the United States spent more on health care per capita ($8,608), and more on health care as percentage of its GDP (17.9%), than any other nation in 2011. The Commonwealth Fund ranked the United States last in the quality of health care among similar countries, and notes U.S. care costs the most. In a 2013 Bloomberg ranking of nations with the most efficient health care systems, the United States ranks 46th among the 48 countries included in the study.
The U.S. Census Bureau reported that 49.9 million residents, 16.3% of the population, were uninsured in 2010 (up from 49.0 million residents, 16.1% of the population, in 2009). A 2004 Institute of Medicine (IOM) report said: "The United States is among the few industrialized nations in the world that does not guarantee access to health care for its population." A 2004 OECD report said: "With the exception of Mexico, Turkey, and the United States, all OECD countries had achieved universal or near-universal (at least 98.4% insured) coverage of their populations by 1990." Recent evidence demonstrates that lack of health insurance causes some 45,000 to 48,000 unnecessary deaths every year in the United States. In 2007, 62.1% of filers for bankruptcies claimed high medical expenses. A 2013 study found that about 25% of all senior citizens declare bankruptcy due to medical expenses, and 43% are forced to mortgage or sell their primary residence.
On March 23, 2010, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) became law, providing for major changes in health insurance.
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Public Law 111-148) is a health care reform bill that was signed into law in the United States by President Barack Obama on March 23, 2010. Along with the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010 (passed March 25), the Act is a product of the health care reform agenda of the Democratic 111th Congress and the Obama administration.
The law includes a large number of health-related provisions to take effect over the next four years, including expanding Medicaid eligibility for people making up to 133% of FPL,[174] subsidizing insurance premiums for peoples making up to 400% of FPL ($88,000 for family of 4) so their maximum "out-of-pocket" pay will be from 2% to 9.8% of income for annual premium,[175][176] providing incentives for businesses to provide health care benefits, prohibiting denial of coverage and denial of claims based on pre-existing conditions, establishing health insurance exchanges, prohibiting insurers from establishing annual spending caps and support for medical research. The costs of these provisions are offset by a variety of taxes, fees, and cost-saving measures, such as new Medicare taxes for high-income brackets, taxes on indoor tanning, cuts to the Medicare Advantage program in favor of traditional Medicare, and fees on medical devices and pharmaceutical companies;[177] there is also a tax penalty for citizens who do not obtain health insurance (unless they are exempt due to low income or other reasons).[178] The Congressional Budget Office estimates that the net effect (including the reconciliation act) will be a reduction in the federal deficit by $143 billion over the first decade.

Under President Allan Golston, the United States Program has made grants such as the following:
U.S. Libraries[edit source | editbeta]
In 1997, the charity introduced a U.S. Libraries initiative with a goal of "ensuring that if you can get to a public library, you can reach the Internet." The foundation has given grants, installed computers and software, and provided training and technical support in partnership with public libraries nationwide.
Most recently, the foundation gave a US$12.2 million grant to the Southeastern Library Network (SOLINET) to assist libraries in Louisiana and Mississippi on the Gulf Coast, many of which were damaged or destroyed by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
Education[edit source | editbeta]
Smaller Schools
The Gates foundation claims one in five students is unable to read and grasp the contents of what they read, and African American and Latino students are graduating with the skills of a middle school student.[52] The Bill and Melinda Gates foundation has invested more than US$250 million in grants to create new small schools, reduce student-to-teacher ratios, and to divide up large high schools through the schools-within-a-school model.[52]
Cornell University
Faculty of Computing and Information Science received US$25 million from the Foundation for a new Information Science building, which will be named the Bill and Melinda Gates Hall. The total cost of the building is expected to be US$60 million. Construction began in March 2012 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2013.[53]
Carnegie Mellon University
The Foundation gave US$20 million to the Carnegie Mellon School of Computer Science for a new Computer Science building called the Gates Center for Computer Science.[54] It officially opened on September 22, 2009.[55]
D.C. Achievers Scholarships
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation announced March 22, 2007 a US$122 million initiative to send hundreds of the District of Columbia's poorest students to college.[56]
Gates Cambridge Scholarships
Donated US$210 million in October 2000 to help outstanding graduate students outside of the United Kingdom study at the University of Cambridge. Approximately 100 new students every year are funded.[57]
Gates Millennium Scholars
Administered by the United Negro College Fund, the foundation donated US$1.5 billion for scholarships to high achieving minority students.[58]
NewSchools Venture Fund
The Foundation contributed US$30 million to help NewSchools to manage more charter schools, which aim to prepare students in historically underserved areas for college and careers.
Strong American Schools
On April 25, 2007, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation joined forces with the Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation pledging a joint US$60 million to create Strong American Schools, a nonprofit project responsible for running ED in 08, an initiative and information campaign aimed at encouraging 2008 presidential contenders to include education in their campaign policies.[59]
Teaching Channel
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation announced in September 2011 a US$3.5 million initiative to launch a multi-platform service delivering professional development videos for teachers over the Internet, public television, cable and other digital outlets.[60] To date, over 13,500 teachers and educators have joined the community to share ideas, lesson plans and teaching methods.[61]
The Texas High School Project
The project was set out to increase and improve high school graduation rates across Texas. The foundation committed US$84.6 million to the project beginning in 2003. The THSP focuses its efforts on high-need schools and districts statewide, with an emphasis on urban areas and the Texas-Mexico border.

What Is Free Market Based Health Care? Milton Friedman - Benefits, Economy, Solutions (1992)

In a system of free market healthcare, prices for healthcare goods and services are set freely by agreement between patients and health care providers, and the laws and forces of supply and demand are free from any intervention by a government, price-setting monopoly, or other authority. A free market contrasts with a controlled market, in which government intervenes in supply and demand through non-market methods such as laws creating barriers to market entry or directly setting prices.
Advocates of free market healthcare contend that systems like single-payer health care and publicly funded health care result in higher costs, inefficiency, longer waiting times for care, denial of care to some, and overall mismanagement.
Skeptics argue that health care as an unregulated commodity invokes market failures not present with government regulation. Individuals with pre-existing conditions would in some cases not be able to afford health care. Hospitals providing unreimbursed charity care might face bankruptcy. Selling health care as a commodity leads to both unfair and inefficient systems with poorer individuals being unable to afford preventive care.
The health freedom movement supports free choice in health care. The libertarian Ludwig von Mises Institute argues in favor of deregulation of the medical profession and health care sector. Some activists are politically left-wing, whilst the former Republican congressman and 2008 U.S. presidential candidate Ron Paul, who supports a free-market health care system, calls himself a free market libertarian. A leading supporter of the movement, Paul introduced the Health Freedom Protection Act in the U.S. Congress in 2005.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_market_healthcare
Health care or healthcare is the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease, illness, injury, and other physical and mental impairments in human beings. Health care is delivered by practitioners in allied health, dentistry, midwifery (obstetrics), medicine, nursing, optometry, pharmacy, psychology and other health professions. It refers to the work done in providing primary care, secondary care, and tertiary care, as well as in public health.
Access to health care varies across countries, groups, and individuals, largely influenced by social and economic conditions as well as the health policies in place. Countries and jurisdictions have different policies and plans in relation to the personal and population-based health care goals within their societies. Health care systems are organizations established to meet the health needs of target populations. Their exact configuration varies between national and subnational entities. In some countries and jurisdictions, health care planning is distributed among market participants, whereas in others, planning occurs more centrally among governments or other coordinating bodies. In all cases, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), a well-functioning health care system requires a robust financing mechanism; a well-trained and adequately-paid workforce; reliable information on which to base decisions and policies; and well maintained health facilities and logistics to deliver quality medicines and technologies.[1]
Health care can contribute to a significant part of a country's economy. In 2011, the health care industry consumed an average of 9.3 percent of the GDP or US$ 3,322 (PPP-adjusted) per capita across the 34 members of OECD countries. The USA (17.7%, or US$ PPP 8,508), the Netherlands (11.9%, 5,099), France (11.6%, 4,118), Germany (11.3%, 4,495), Canada (11.2%, 5669), and Switzerland (11%, 5,634) were the top spenders, however life expectancy in total population at birth was highest in Switzerland (82.8 years), Japan and Italy (82.7), Spain and Iceland (82.4), France (82.2) and Australia (82.0), while OECD's average exceeds 80 years for the first time ever in 2011: 80.1 years, a gain of 10 years since 1970. The USA (78.7 years) ranges only on place 26 among the 34 OECD member countries, but has the highest costs by far. All OECD countries have achieved universal (or almost universal) health coverage, except Mexico and the USA.[2][3] (see also international comparisons.)
Health care is conventionally regarded as an important determinant in promoting the general physical and mental health and well-being of people around the world. An example of this was the worldwide eradication of smallpox in 1980, declared by the WHO as the first disease in human history to be completely eliminated by deliberate health care interventions.

It is a tale of two countries. One has assassinations, mass murders and grisly beheadings. The other Mexico has a rich cultural heritage, a booming economy that threatens to overtake Brazil, and is home to the world's richest man. As a new Mexican president gets ready to take office, which version of this country will prevail? Is Mexico winning or losing the war on drugs? Can Mexico become a political and economic superpower?

Our Vice Mexico team went to the Sonora desert in search of the Bufo Alvarius, an endemic toad species that contains a very high dosage of 5-MEO-DMT in it´s body. 5-MEO-DMT is said to be the most potent hallucinogenic in the world.
Our guide through this trip was Octavio Rettig, a doctor who has studied this toad for more than eight year and has brought the medicine - as he calls the substance - all over the world.
We went to Punta Chueca, Sonora, where we hanged out with the indigenous community who has been taking 5-MEO-DMT from the toad since pre-hispanic times. We met Grandpa Pancho - one of the elders of the town - and travelled with him to the sacred island of Isla Tiburón. There we had a small ceremony where we tried the substance for the very first time.

They're the farm workers who feed America, but migrant labourers remain underprivileged and exploited. Now, the newest generation of Mexican Americans are fighting back, and Donald Trump is in their sights.
"When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending their best", said Donald Trump in a recent speech. "They're bringing drugs, they're bringing crime, they're rapists." But there are over a million migrant workers in the US, many from Mexico, who do the jobs few American's are willing to do. The Latino population, growing at ten times the rate of the overall US population, are the lifeblood of the country's $400 billion agricultural industry. For the second and third generation children watching their parents toil, now is the time to fight for proper migrant rights. "It's such an important job, farm workers literally feed the world", says Gerardo Silguero, whose father has worked tirelessly for his future. Volunteer led workshops are helping both parents and children understand their rights as migrant citizens. But while their campaign is bearing fruit, they still have to tackle the views of Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump and his supporters. They have decades of racist tradition and exploitative migrant working conditions to overturn. They believe a new attitude towards the education of "undocumented" migrant children could usher in the change they demand.
