TWO patrol boats of the Royal Australian Navy arrived at the Naval Forces Central (Navforcen) port in Barangay Lo-oc, Lapu-Lapu City on Thursday as part of Exercise Lumbas 2016. The two Armidale-class patrol boats, HMAS Glenelg (ACPB 96) and HMAS Larrakia (ACPB 84) will be in Cebu until October 21 for the naval exercise. The patrol boats will be used as floating assets for different trainings, which the two navy groups will jointly undertake. The annual exercise between the Philippine Navy and Royal Australian Navy that started in 1998 in the Philippines. Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) is the world's largest international maritime exercise with 26 nations, 200 plus aircraft, more than 40 ships and submarines, and 25,000 personnel participating. Australian shipbuilder Austal has announced that it was contracted to deliver a mid-life remediation program to the Royal Australian Navy’s Armidale Class patrol boat (ACPB) fleet. The company said it would undertake a number of hull remediation and configuration changes as well as planned and corrective maintenance work on up to seven ACPB’s at the company’s Henderson, Western Australia shipyard from October 2016. Austal is already delivering in-service support to the Australian Border Force’s fleet of eight Cape-class patrol boats (designed and constructed by Austal) and has been contracted to provide in service support for nineteen steel Pacific Patrol Boat Replacement (PPB-R) vessels, as they enter service from late 2018. I think we (HMS Illustrious) spent 5 weeks alongside at Woolloomooloo in Sydney Harbour. I don't think I was ever made to feel so welcome, by so many friendly people anywhere else in the World, Fantastic time...Thank you Australia.
From 30 March to 1 April 2015, ASPI held a major international conference on “Australia’s Future Surface Fleet” in Canberra. Senior policy-makers, high-level military officials, leading industry representatives and academics from Australia and around the world discussed key dimensions of major surface ship operations and naval shipbuilding. The goal was to inform government decision-making as it seeks to replace the Royal Australian Navy’s ANZAC frigates and considers the future of the nation’s naval shipbuilding industry.
