TWO patrol boats of the Royal Australian Navy arrived at the Naval Forces Central (Navforcen) port in Barangay Lo-oc, Lapu-Lapu City on Thursday as part of Exercise Lumbas 2016.
The two Armidale-class patrol boats, HMAS Glenelg (ACPB 96) and HMAS Larrakia (ACPB 84) will be in Cebu until October 21 for the naval exercise.
The patrol boats will be used as floating assets for different trainings, which the two navy groups will jointly undertake.
The annual exercise between the Philippine Navy and Royal Australian Navy that started in 1998 in the Philippines. It aims to strengthen relationship, inter-operability and enhance mutual cooperation between the two countries.
Training activities include Subject Matter Expert Exchanges, Table Top Exercise, Field Training Exercise (Force Integration and Maritime Security Operations), ceremonial and sports activities.
Lt. Bennet Christian Nuevarez, spokesperson of Navforcen, said the exercise will benefit them because of the more advanced training of their foreign counterpart.
Nuevarez said that other government agencies such as the Maritime Police, Bureau of Customs and Philippine Coast Guard, National Intelligence Coordinating Agency, Bureau of Quarantine, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, Provincial Risk Reduction and Management Council and Cebu Port Authority whose functions involved in the maritime operations to deter human trafficking, entry of illegal drugs and some contrabands, will also participate.
One of the highlights of this year’s exercise is the visit, board and seizure exercise which was conducted yesterday in the seawaters of Camotes Island.
Captain Antonio Palces, the deputy commander of Navforcen, is the exercise director of this year’s Exercise Lumbas, with Commander John Brown as his Australian counterpart. Exercise Lumbas 2016 will be conducted at Navforcen’s jurisdiction.

Australian shipbuilder Austal has announced that it was contracted to deliver a mid-life remediation program to the Royal Australian Navy’s Armidale Class patrol boat (ACPB) fleet.
The company said it would undertake a number of hull remediation and configuration changes as well as planned and corrective maintenance work on up to seven ACPB’s at the company’s Henderson, Western Australia shipyard from October 2016.
Austal is already delivering in-service support to the Australian Border Force’s fleet of eight Cape-class patrol boats (designed and constructed by Austal) and has been contracted to provide in service support for nineteen steel Pacific Patrol Boat Replacement (PPB-R) vessels, as they enter service from late 2018.
Austal Chief Executive Officer David Singleton commented: “As the original designer and builder of the Armidale Class, Austal is in an ideal position to deliver this important, mid-life enhancement work to a proven naval platform. Our inherent knowledge base and practical experience building and servicing the hard working Armidale fleet will ensure the vessels depart Austal in 2017 as a fully operational and effective capability.”
The Armidale Class patrol boat (ACPB) is a 56 meter all-aluminium monohull patrol boat designed and constructed by Austal for the Royal Australian Navy. Fourteen ACPB’s were delivered from 2005 to 2007 and will represent Australia’s essential patrol capability until new offshore patrol vessels start entering the fleet from 2020.

Australian shipbuilder Austal has announced that it was contracted to deliver a mid-life remediation program to the Royal Australian Navy’s Armidale Class patrol boat (ACPB) fleet.
The company said it would undertake a number of hull remediation and configuration changes as well as planned and corrective maintenance work on up to seven ACPB’s at the company’s Henderson, Western Australia shipyard from October 2016.
Austal is already delivering in-service support to the Australian Border Force’s fleet of eight Cape-class patrol boats (designed and constructed by Austal) and has been contracted to provide in service support for nineteen steel Pacific Patrol Boat Replacement (PPB-R) vessels, as they enter service from late 2018.
Austal Chief Executive Officer David Singleton commented: “As the original designer and builder of the Armidale Class, Austal is in an ideal position to deliver this important, mid-life enhancement work to a proven naval platform. Our inherent knowledge base and practical experience building and servicing the hard working Armidale fleet will ensure the vessels depart Austal in 2017 as a fully operational and effective capability.”
The Armidale Class patrol boat (ACPB) is a 56 meter all-aluminium monohull patrol boat designed and constructed by Austal for the Royal Australian Navy. Fourteen ACPB’s were delivered from 2005 to 2007 and will represent Australia’s essential patrol capability until new offshore patrol vessels start entering the fleet from 2020.

Senior policy-makers, high-level military officials, leading industry representatives and academics from Australia and around the world discussed key dimensions of major surface ship operations and naval shipbuilding. The goal was to inform government decision-making as it seeks to replace the Royal Australian Navy’s ANZAC frigates and considers the future of the nation’s naval shipbuilding industry. Opened by the Minister for Defence, the Hon Kevin Andrews, the conference was a great success, providing great networking opportunities and exposure for attendants to key decision-makers and shapers.
