State parks or provincial parks are parks or other protected areas managed at the sub-national level within those nations which use "state" or "province" as a political subdivision. State parks are typically established by a state to preserve a location on account of its natural beauty, historic interest, or recreational potential. There are state parks under the administration of the government of each U.S. state, and of some states of Mexico. The term is also used in Australia, though the distinction between state and national parks there is different. The Canadian equivalent term is provincial park. Similar systems of local government maintained parks exist in other countries, but the terminology varies.
State parks are thus similar to national parks, but under state rather than federal administration. Similarly, local government entities below state level may maintain parks, e.g., regional parks or county parks. In general, state parks are smaller than national parks, with a few exceptions such as the Adirondack Park in New York and Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in California.
William B. Umstead State Park is a North Carolina state park in Wake County, North Carolina in the United States. It covers 5,599 acres (22.66 km2) nestled between the expanding cities of Raleigh, Cary, and Durham, North Carolina. It offers hiking, bridle, and bike trails, boat rentals, camping, picnic areas, and educational programs.
Long before the first settlers, the area now known as William B. Umstead State Park was an untamed land. American Bison, elk, bobcats and wolves roamed forests of oak, hickory and beech. Native Americans later inhabited the land and avenues of trade were developed nearby. Such avenues included the Occoneeche trail to the north and the Pee Dee trail to the south. In 1774, land grants opened the area for settlement.
Forests were cleared as agricultural interests sprouted. While early farming efforts were successful, poor cultivation practices and one-crop production led to depletion and erosion of the soil. During the Depression, farmers made futile attempts to grow cotton in worn-out soil around Crabtree Creek.
Mountain biking is the sport of riding bicycles off-road, often over rough terrain, using specially designed mountain bikes. Mountain bikes share similarities with other bikes, but incorporate features designed to enhance durability and performance in rough terrain.
Mountain biking can generally be broken down into multiple categories: cross country, trail riding, all mountain (also referred to as "Enduro"), downhill, freeride and dirt jumping. Although the majority of mountain biking falls into the categories of Trail and Cross Country riding styles.
This individual sport requires endurance, core strength and balance, bike handling skills, and self-reliance. Advanced riders pursue both steep technical descents and high incline climbs. In the case of freeriding, downhilling, and dirt jumping, aerial manoeuvres are performed off both natural features and specially constructed jumps and ramps.
Mountain biking can be performed almost anywhere from a back yard to a gravel road, but the majority of mountain bikers ride off-road trails, whether country back roads, fire roads, or singletrack (narrow trails that wind through forests, mountains, deserts, or fields). There are aspects of mountain biking that are more similar to trail running than regular bicycling. Because riders are often far from civilization, there is a strong ethic of self-reliance in the sport. Riders learn to repair their broken bikes or flat tires to avoid being stranded miles from help. Many riders will carry a backpack, including a water bladder, containing all the essential tools and equipment for trailside repairs, and many riders also carry emergency supplies in the case of injury miles from outside help. Club rides and other forms of group rides are common, especially on longer treks. A combination sport named mountain bike orienteering adds the skill of map navigation to mountain biking.
Turkey Creek may be:
A park is an area of natural, semi-natural, or planted space set aside for human enjoyment and recreation or for the protection of wildlife or natural habitats. It may consist of grassy areas, rocks, soil, and trees, but may also contain buildings and other artifacts such as monuments, fountains or playground structures. In North America, many parks have fields for playing sports such as soccer, baseball and football, and paved areas for games such as basketball. Many parks have trails for walking, biking and other activities. Some parks are built adjacent to bodies of water or watercourses, and these parks may comprise a beach or boat dock area. Often, the smallest parks are in urban areas, where a park may take up only a city block or less. Urban parks often have benches for sitting and they may contain picnic tables and barbecue grills. Parks have differing rules regarding whether dogs can be brought into the park: some parks prohibit dogs; some parks allow them with restrictions (e.g., use of a leash); and some parks, which may be called "dog parks," permit dogs to run off-leash.

Mountain Biking Umstead State Park Late Afternoon June 16, 2013. This is from the Beginning of the Graylyn Trail to Reedy Creek and then into Lake Crabtree. About a 35 minute ride with some good down hills and up hills. I did some 2x speeds with Windows Movie Maker in some areas to shorten this but wanted to include the entire ride. They keep this park very well maintained! Picked up a biking buddy at 8:35, he stopped to check on someone who had a minor bike incident. The Bike 2005 Raleigh M80, with Disc Brakes, Shimano Gears/Rapid Fire Shifters & 27 Speeds.
Great hiking trails in North Carolina.

Part I of Mountain Biking in the Umstead State Park the South Turkey Creek Trail section that connects back up to Reedy Creek Trail. You're not going to want to sit through this whole thing. This is a partially failed experiment of recording a full run with two GoPros in order to capture voice prompts from a training software. Unfortunately the audio capture failed during the recording. There's a lot of movement, so the footage is heavily stabilized to make this even somewhat watchable. The chest mount sways a fair amount. The head cam only when I spit out the bugs I inhaled. It's 85 degrees out. This is the Sycamore Trail loop at Umstead State Park in Raleigh, NC. I'm going to retry this another time, hopefully with the proper audio, as that was the reason for this to begin with.

A training run at Umstead State Park in Raleigh, NC, using the moov a.i. running coach. More info on the moov: http://moov.cc/getmoov/DBDD928C14 It was set to train for running efficiency, level 5: 168 steps per minute. This run was a little slower since it was form over speed. Having a bit of difficulty dialing in the camera angle. I didn't bother with the last 15 minutes of footage since the camera is mostly pointed at the hat's bill. I'll re-do this another time, with the standard Android text-to-speech voice for a more accurate default representation.
