Mosul (/moʊˈsuːl/; Arabic: الموصل – al-Mawṣil (local pronunciation: el-Mōṣul); Syriac: ܢܝܢܘܐ – Nînwe; Kurdish: مووسڵ – Mûsil) is a city of normally about two and a half million people (2014 est.) in northern Iraq, illegally occupied since 10 June 2014 by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.
Mosul is completely ruled by the Islamic State terror group headquartered in Al-Raqqah, Syria. The legitimate government of Iraq stopped paying salaries soon after the city was overrun by militants. (that ISIL allegedly exploited by stealing a generous percentage) which it had previously paid to city workers including nurses, doctors,
Located some 400 km (250 mi) north of Baghdad, the original city stands on the west bank of the Tigris River, opposite the ancient Assyrian city of Nineveh on the east bank, but the metropolitan area has grown to encompass substantial areas on both the "Left Coast" (east side) and the "Right Coast" (west side) as the two banks are described in the local language.

Iraq (/ɪˈræk/, i/ɪˈrɑːk/, or /aɪˈræk/; Arabic: العراق al-‘Irāq, Kurdish: Êraq), officially the Republic of Iraq (Arabic: جمهورية العراق Jumhūrīyat al-‘Irāq; Kurdish: كۆماری عێراق Komar-i ‘Êraq), is a country in Western Asia. The country borders Turkey to the north, Iran to the east, Kuwait to the southeast, Saudi Arabia to the south, Jordan to the southwest, and Syria to the west. The southern part of Iraq is within the Arabian Peninsula. The capital, Baghdad, is in the centre of the country and its largest city. The largest ethnic groups in Iraq are Arabs and Kurds. Other ethnic groups include Assyrians, Turkmen, Shabakis, Yazidis, Armenians, Mandeans, Circassians, and Kawliya. Around 95% of the country's 36 million citizens are Shia or Sunni Muslims, with Christianity, Yarsan, Yezidism, and Mandeanism also present.
Iraq has a narrow section of coastline measuring 58 km (36 mi) on the northern Persian Gulf and its territory encompasses the Mesopotamian Alluvial Plain, the northwestern end of the Zagros mountain range, and the eastern part of the Syrian Desert. Two major rivers, the Tigris and Euphrates, run south through the centre of Iraq and flow into the Shatt al-Arab near the Persian Gulf. These rivers provide Iraq with significant amounts of fertile land.
Two years ago, Islamic State troops stormed Mosul, Iraq. Today the city is the militant group’s last remaining urban base in the country, but Iraqi forces, backed by the U.S. and others, are preparing to drive them out. Special correspondent Jane Ferguson reports from Qayarah, Iraq, in partnership with Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting.

The Islamic State, a hardline Sunni jihadist group that formerly had ties to al Qaeda, has conquered large swathes of Iraq and Syria. Previously known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), the group has announced its intention to reestablish the caliphate and has declared its leader, the shadowy Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, as the caliph. The lightning advances the Islamic State made across Syria and Iraq in June shocked the world. But it's not just the group's military victories that have garnered attention — it's also the pace with which its members have begun to carve out a viable state. Flush with cash and US weapons seized during its advances in Iraq, the Islamic State's expansion shows no sign of slowing down. In the first week of August alone, Islamic State fighters have taken...

Only weeks before Iraqi troops and their local and international partners start their push to retake the city of Mosul from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS), the leaders of Turkey and Iraq have been caught in a war of words that could derail the Mosul liberation efforts."You are not my interlocutor. You are not at my level. You are not my equivalent. You are not of the same quality as me," said Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday, in response to a demand from Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi that Turkey withdraw its troops from Iraq.

Iraqi special forces have begun a major military build up outside Mosul ahead of a planned offensive to retake the ISIL held city. The operation to retake Mosul is expected to be the most complex yet for Iraq’s army and comes as the US-led coalition increases air strikes against militants in and around the city. In a statement, the coalition said its planes had conducted more than 50 airstrikes against the so-called Islamic State group in the area over the past two weeks. “We arrived here at 4am during sunrise. We have come to liberate Mosul. We will liberate it and we will make sure the families can return home,’‘ said one Iraqi army spokesman. Mosul has been under ISIL control for more than two years. Around 30,000 Iraqi and coalition forces are expected to take part in the offensi...

Turkish officials insist that the country’s troops have to be part of the long-awaited operation aimed at driving out Daesh terrorists from the northern Iraqi city of Mosul. Turkey’s official news agency, Anadolu, quoted officials as saying that the issue has been discussed with U-S and Iraqi sources. The report added that the planned operation will kick off within days unless extraordinary developments take place. The issue of Turkish forces stationed in a military camp in northern Iraq has been a serious bone of contention between Iraq and Turkey. Baghdad says the deployment is a violation of the country’s sovereignty. Ankara, however, says it has stationed the troops following prior request from the Iraqi government. In 2014, Islamic State militants swept into Western Iraq's Anbar Province, overrunning Iraqi security forces, enslaving minorities, and causing thousands to flee for their lives. The jihadist group captured Iraq’s largest city, Mosul, and the cities of Ramadi and Fallujah, where hundreds of US troops died fighting the Islamic State’s predecessor. Now, two years later, the Iraqi security forces, with help from Iranian-supported Shiite militias and US military advisors and warplanes, are fighting to take back towns and cities in Anbar, one battle at a time. But it’s a difficult task: Anbar has been the crucible of Iraq’s insurgency, and is the country’s Sunni heartland — long marginalized by and hostile to the Shiite-led government in Baghdad. A year after the Islamic State's lightning conquest of Iraq's second-largest city of Mosul, the poorly-trained and equipped Kurdish peshmerga forces are the international coalition's only reliable boots on the ground in northern Iraq. The Pentagon's hopes of recapturing the city by spring 2015 have been dashed by the military failures of the Iraqi Army further south, leaving the peshmerga to defend a 600-mile long frontline almost encircling Mosul, fending off constant Islamic State (IS) assaults with insufficient supplies of ammunition and modern weapons. For one month, VICE News embedded with the peshmerga fighters on the Mosul frontline, gaining an insight into the coalition's faltering war against IS through the eyes of the Kurdish volunteers bearing the brunt of the fighting. Date : 21.8.2016 The Iraqi army and volunteer forces have been carrying out an offensive to liberate Mosul from Daesh terrorists. Mosul fell into the hands of the Takfiri terrorists in June 2014 when the terror group claimed it as their main bastion in Iraq. But the Iraqi army and the allied Popular Mobilization Units have been immensely successful in flushing the extremists out of the cities fell to Daesh. There are more variables at play through, one being the United States. Critics have time and again questioned US deployment of troops, citing Washington's failure to commit them when Daesh was overrunning Syrian and Iraqi cities one after another. In tonight's edition of the Debate, we'll focus on the role of some of the major players on the ground as Baghdad appears to be on the verge...
