Geology (from the Greek γῆ, gē, i.e. "earth" and -λoγία, -logia, i.e. "study of, discourse") is an earth science comprising the study of solid Earth, the rocks of which it is composed, and the processes by which they change. Geology can also refer generally to the study of the solid features of any celestial body (such as the geology of the Moon or Mars).
Geology gives insight into the history of the Earth by providing the primary evidence for plate tectonics, the evolutionary history of life, and past climates. Geology is important for mineral and hydrocarbon exploration and exploitation, evaluating water resources, understanding of natural hazards, the remediation of environmental problems, and for providing insights into past climate change. Geology also plays a role in geotechnical engineering and is a major academic discipline.
The majority of geological data comes from research on solid Earth materials. These typically fall into one of two categories: rock and unconsolidated material.

4 days in the Danakil Depression with Ethio Travel & Tours. The hottest place on earth.
The Danakil Depression is called the cradle of hominids after the famous Lucy Australopithecus fossil was found in 1974. It is hottest and lowest places on earth and dry for most of the year. We made a four-day trip from Mekele into the area. In the two days we spent driving we covered less than two hundred kilometers. The highlights of the trip (Ertale open volcano, volcanic fields, salt mining) are covered in separate video clips. This clip gives an impression of the "roads", the Afar people living in the area, the caravans between Mekele and the area and the "facilities"for tourists. Background music is from Jon Sayles (http://www.jsayles.com/familypages/EarlyMusic.htm)
During our one year overland trip from the Netherlands to South Africa we visited the Danakil Depression in Ethiopia. In addition to the famous Ertale open volcano, the salt planes, Dallol volcanic field and salt mining we also visited this beautiful cave. Afar Triangle The Afar Triangle (also called the Afar Depression or the Danakil Depression) is a geological depression that is caused by the Afar Triple Junction which is part of the Great Rift Valley. It overlaps Eritrea, Djibouti and the entire Afar Region of Ethiopia. The Afar Triangle includes the Danakil Depression and the lowest point in Africa, Lake Asal (155 metres or 509 feet below sea level). Only the Awash River flows into the area, where it ends in a chain of lakes that increase in salinity. Dallol is also part of the depression, one of the hottest places year-round anywhere on Earth. The climate varies from around 25 °C (77 °F) during the rainy season (September--March) to 48 °C (118 °F) during the dry season (March--September). Afar is well known as one of the cradles of hom...
Salt plain in the Danakil Depression. The Danakil Depression is one of the most inhospitable areas on earth, 100 m below sea level. It is in North East Ethiopia near the border with Eritrea. The salt layer is 800 m thick and has been used for centuries to mine salt. The mining is shown in our clip http://youtu.be/8jUZJYeCl_M. We visited the Danakil Depression on our overland trip from the Netherlands to South Africa; see our playlist https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLMYlw_C7EP8JSXwn1EutZtidPlM8KoY2E. An Expedition to the Hottes Spot on this Planet A six-day expedition in the Danakil Depression
Natural wonders - Danakil Depression The Danakil Depression is the northern part of the Afar Triangle or Afar Depression, a geological depression that has resulted from the presence of three tectonic plates in the Horn of Africa. The Danakil Depression is located in the Afar Region near the border with Eritrea and Ethiopia. This area is referred to as the cradle of hominids after Donald Johanson and his colleagues in 1974 found the famous Lucy Australopithecus fossil, which has been dated 3.2 million years old. In Glen Rose, Texas, human footprints have been found next to and on top of dinosaur footprints. The track trails sometimes overlap. One explanation offered is that they were carved. A portion of one trail of human footprints, known as the Taylor Trail, had already been revealed at the time the carved explanation was made. After the carved explanation was made, they uncovered the rest of the trail under about six feet of clay and limestone and found seven more footprints. The process involved a bulldozer removing tons of limestone overburden, effectively eliminating the possibility that the tracks were carved. A total of fourteen tracks now make up the Taylor Trail. Here's a picture of the bulldozer removing the limestone: http://www.bible.ca/tracks/taylor-stan-bulldozer.jpg Here's a pic...

What is happening right under our feet? What is our soil made of, from the shallowest layers to the core of our planet? This documentary explores the incredible life that is bursting right beneath us.
This video provides startling experimental evidence that casts into doubt the basic principles which have been the backbone of modern historical geology. The principles of superposition, sedimentation, stratigraphy, the age and formation of the geological column are all called into question.

The Deepest Place On Earth - Atlas Documentary Films Amazing! A trench is a type of excavation or depression in the ground that is generally deeper than it is wide (as opposed to a wider gully or ditch), and narrow compared to its length (as opposed to a simple hole). In geology, trenches are created as a result of erosion by rivers or by geological movement of tectonic plates. In the civil engineering field of construction or maintenance of infrastructure, trenches are created to install underground infrastructure or utilities (such as gas mains, water mains or telephone lines), or later to search for these installations. Trenches have often been dug for military defensive purposes. In archaeology, the "trench method" is used for searching and excavating ancient ruins or to dig into str...
