Wharf Fest

Saturday, October 22: The annual Wharf Fest and Chowder Competition will take place at Pier 43, Jefferson and Taylor, and on Little Embarcadero between Taylor and Powell from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A street closure of Little Embarcadero between Powell and Taylor streets will be required from 1 a.m. to midnight, Saturday.

There will be no impact on Muni service.

Superhero Street Fair

Saturday, October 22: The Superhero Street Fair will take place on Napoleon Street between Jerrold and Evans streets from noon until 10 p.m.

A street closure of Napoleon Street between Jerrold and Evans streets will be required from 7 a.m.,Saturday to 1 a.m., Sunday.

There will be no impact on Muni service.

You’ve seen Muni bingo, Muni haiku, a one-woman band, a puppet show, and stellar storytellers on stage … What else do we have in store for you at the next Muni Diaries Live? You’ll have to come party with us at the Elbo Room on Nov. 5 to find out! The full lineup is here, and it’s gonna be a good one.

For this show, we are adding something a little different: when you buy a ticket, you can also give to Food Runners, the San Francisco non-profit organization that’s currently delivering over 15 tons of food a week that would otherwise be thrown away. Food Runners picks up excess food from businesses and delivers it to agencies feeding the hungry.

BART’s new fleet sees the light of day

If you blinked, you might’ve missed it—last weekend BART slowly rolled out (get it?) a test model of its new fleet of trains for some of us to “oooh” and “ahhhh” over. SFGate has details on upcoming tests if you didn’t catch this one:

Overnight testing for the train should start in the next two weeks, said Paul Oversier, assistant general manager for BART, with daytime runs starting in December and tests with passengers starting in early 2017.

According to that same SFGate post, some people who did get to ride lodged some complaints:

Regular BART commuters from Pleasant Hill and elsewhere into the East Bay bemoaned the lack of seats available on the new cars. Already, the current cars with four more seats are overcrowded, they said, and standing for an hour commute isn’t exactly comfortable.

Changes from the current fleet include: more standing room, higher ceilings, a more-efficient AC system, three boarding doors per car (versus the current two), and better ways to secure bicycles. BART’s plan is to have 775 new cars by 2021 to try to keep up with an ever-expanding ridership.

Celebrating Muni in wonderful, wearable screenprint

Because who doesn’t need screenprinted designs of, surely no coincidence, some of the most colorful Muni bus routes?

The shirts (detail shot above) are the craftsmanship of Overstep, a T-shirt and graphic arts studio based (duh) in Northern California. They’re at the Ferry Plaza artist market every week Friday through Sunday, or good old-fashioned mail order is also an option for T-shirts. Say what you will about her, but Muni is one hell of a muse.

That’s exactly what happened recently in New York City.

In the video above, NYC subway rider Crispin Michael Booker is heard telling fellow passengers about a recent, uplifting change in his life. He is then seen asking a specific rider to share his story. Here’s what Crispin has to say:

Next Wednesday, Revel in Muni Nerdery at Nerd Nite!

Hey nerds! And I mean that in the best, most complimentary, you’re-my-people way: next Wednesday’s Nerd Nite features none other than transit reporter (and upcoming Muni Diaries Live storyteller) Joe Fitzgerald Rodriguez, who will take you on an express ride through the colorful history of the Fast Pass. Did you know that Harvey Milk was a champion of the Fast Pass?

If you haven’t been to Nerd Nite, it’s an “informal gathering at which nerds get together for nerdery of all sorts (well, mostly presentations and drinking). Nerds and non-nerds alike gather to meet, drink and learn something new.” It’s pretty much the best nerd gathering I can think of.

This month’s show also features “Love Unhinged: King Pedro & the Corpse Bride of Portugal” by Annetta Black, and “Through the New Looking Glass: Reality Capture from the Camera Obscura to 3D Scanning, VR and AR” by Scott Page.
