Welcome the Night is the fifth studio album by the band The Ataris. It is the long-delayed follow-up to the band's previous album So Long, Astoria. With this album, The Ataris abandoned the pop punk genre and moved to the alternative rock genre. It was originally scheduled to be released in 2005 but the release date had been pushed back to 2007 due to the inner dissipation of the band's now former label Columbia records. In late 2006 the band were finally granted release from their contract allowing them to start their own label, Isola Recordings, partnering with Sanctuary Records.
On December 19, 2006 the single/EP "Not Capable of Love" was released on iTunes to mixed reviews. It had the single "Not Capable of Love" as the first track and the B-side "Welcome the Night" as the second.
The album was released on February 20, 2007 on isola recordings / Sanctuary Records. The video for "Not Capable of Love" was released in February 2007. Early pressings of the CD purchased at Best Buy contained a bonus disc with "The First Elegy" as track one and "Sonnet for the Early Departed" as track two. Also, early pressings of the CD purchased at Target contain the bonus track "The Ghost of Last December". The special edition of this album, sold in Canada and Europe by HMV, contains "Welcome the Night" and "The Ghost of Last December" as bonus tracks.*
We did what we could
To save this house from falling
But it burns because it's wood
And now you'll never call me darling
I coughed your name
I smoked all day
And I slept myself sleepy
I was sleeping it away
Don't let it burn
Don't get confused
Don't let it get to you
We did what we could
To save this car from crashing
Your pretty face is soaked in blood
You know, I still find you dashing
Airbag suffocates
You need a little space
The rain on the windshield
I watched you limp away
Doesn't it have to hurt?
Don't get confused
Don't let it bother you
Don't try to call
You'll lose it all
You get used to her bad news,
