A woman has been charged with the stabbing murder of her ex-husband, whose body was found in a unit in Melbourne's east.
Harold Nolan, 73, was found dead in his bed in his Mitcham unit on Monday afternoon.
His ex-wife, 69-year-old Renee Nolan, was taken into custody at the scene and later charged with one count of murder.
Ms Nolan faced an out-of-sessions court hearing at Melbourne West police station on Monday night, wearing a police-issued blue jumpsuit.
Detective Senior Constable Matthew Lewis told the hearing the accused called triple zero to inform police of the death about 12.20pm.
Mr Nolan was found stabbed to death in his bed, he said.
Ms Nolan was taken to Box Hill police station where she admitted causing her ex-husband's death, Senior Constable Lewis said.
An expressionless Ms Nolan spoke softly at the hearing.
When asked by the Bail Justice if she understood the charge, she responded, "yes".
One neighbour said Mr Nolan suffered a stroke some years ago and rarely left the unit.
The couple is believed to have two sons who live in the area.
Ms Nolan has no prior convictions.
A neighbour said the attack was "completely out of character from the quiet couple they were familiar with".
"This is completely out of the blue. All the neighbours talk to each other and this is an incredible shock," the resident, who requested not to be named, said.
However another neighbour, Ramaswami Sridharan, said most of the residents kept to themselves.
"It is disconcerting. It is something I would not have imagined, not in this neighbourhood, which has a lot of families," he said.
"It is something out of the ordinary, you feel a little bit tentative."
Ms Nolan was remanded overnight to face the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
