Inside Story, with presenter Stephen Cole, discusses with guests Saeed Al-Shehabi, a member of the Bahrain Freedom Movement and a political activist who was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Bahraini government; Riad Kahwaji, the director of the Institute for Near East and Gulf Military Analysis; and from Beirut, Joseph Kechichian, Gulf News columnist and author of "The Beguiling Gulf Cooperation Council" and his newly released book entitled, "Legal and Political Reforms in Saudi Arabia".

The Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (Arabic: مجلس التعاون لدول الخليج العربية), originally (and still colloquially) known as the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC, مجلس التعاون الخليجي), is a regional intergovernmental political and economic union consisting of all Arab states of the Persian Gulf, except for Iraq. Its member states are the Islamic monarchies of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
Amidst the Bahraini uprising, Saudi Arabia and the UAE sent ground troops to Bahrain in order to quell Bahraini protests. Kuwait and Oman refrained from sending troops. In December 2011, Saudi Arabia proposed that the GCC form a confederation. Objections have been raised against the proposal by the other countries. There have been discussions regarding the future membership of Jordan, Morocco, and Yemen.

We agreed that there is only a political solution to the conflict in Yemen. We are trying to join forces to facilitate this process. (...)"
Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir on Yemen: "I think the reason that there is a commonality of views is because the consensus ion the international community and also among the Yemeni parties is that aby political settlement in Yemen has to be based on three basic principles, the GCC initiative, the outcome of the Yemeni national dialogue and the UN Security Council resolution 2216. There is agreement with regards to with the number of tracks that need to be pursued ion order to implement these principles. So now what we are trying to do is encourage the parties to move towards signing agreements and implementing those tracks, so that we can move Yemen from a State of war to a State of development, reconstruction and prosperity. (...)"

The Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (Arabic: مجلس التعاون لدول الخليج العربية), originally (and still colloquially) known as the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC, مجلس التعاون الخليجي), is a regional intergovernmental political and economic union consisting of all Arab states of the Persian Gulf, except for Iraq. Its member states are the Islamic monarchies of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
Amidst the Bahraini uprising, Saudi Arabia and the UAE sent ground troops to Bahrain in order to quell Bahraini protests. Kuwait and Oman refrained from sending troops. In December 2011, Saudi Arabia proposed that the GCC form a confederation. Objections have been raised against the proposal by the other countries. There have been discussions regarding the future membership of Jordan, Morocco, and Yemen.

This was one element where conference was complete between us and among the respective parties. I have to say that today we are really together in encouraging and trying to provide space to the parties to find a political solution. We agreed that there is only a political solution to the conflict in Yemen. We are trying to join forces to facilitate this process. (...)"
Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir on Yemen: "I think the reason that there is a commonality of views is because the consensus ion the international community and also among the Yemeni parties is that aby political settlement in Yemen has to be based on three basic principles, the GCC initiative, the outcome of the Yemeni national dialogue and the UN Security Council resolution 2216. There is agreement with regards to with the number of tracks that need to be pursued ion order to implement these principles. So now what we are trying to do is encourage the parties to move towards signing agreements and implementing those tracks, so that we can move Yemen from a State of war to a State of development, reconstruction and prosperity. The Brazilian Army commonly acts along with other law enforcement organisations in order to fight not only the drugs trafficking, but also animals, weapons, people and several other illegal deeds.
The Special Air Service (SAS) is a unit of the British Army founded in 1941 as a regiment, and later reconstituted as a corps in 1950. Serving as a model for special forces around the world, the unit undertakes a number of roles including covert reconnaissance, counter-terrorism, direct action and human intelligence gathering.
Hezbollah Axis (IRGC)
Hezbollah was conceived by Muslim clerics and funded by Iran following the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982, and was primarily formed to offer resistance to the Israeli occupation.Its leaders were followers of Ayatollah Khomeini, and its forces were trained and organized by a contingent of 1,500 Iranian Revolutionary Guards that arrived from Iran with permission from the Syrian government. After the 1982 invasion, Israel occupied a strip of south Lebanon, which was controlled by a militia supported by Israel, the South Lebanon Army. Hezbollah waged a guerilla campaign against them; with the collapse of the SLA, Israel withdrew on May 24, 2000.

George Naufal, Assistant Professor of Economics at the American University of Sharjah and a research fellow at the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA), delivered a CIRS Monthly Dialogue lecture titled, "The Economics of Migration in the Gulf Cooperation Council Countries" on September 9, 2013. The lecture mapped the history of non-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Arab workers migrating to GCC states, and explained how and why there were such dramatic changes to these migration patterns since the 1970s.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is due to give a press conference in Moscow on Thursday, May 26, following the fourth meeting of Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf. During a rare, high-profile summit at the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland, Obama will meet with representatives from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Oman, all members of the Gulf Cooperation Council, to discuss security cooperation.
Tension over U.S. policy toward Tehran, Syria and the Arab Spring uprisings will loom over the meetings, which have already been overshadowed by some countries' decisions to send lower-level leaders.
Saudi King Salman pulled out, sending Crown Prince Mohammed bin Nayef and Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman instead.
The White House has said such decisions were not snubs and has portrayed the summit as a set of working meetings rather than symbolic photo sessions.
Arab leaders are concerned that lifting Western sanctions as part of a nuclear deal with Iran would empower Tehran to act in destabilizing ways in the region.
The United States and five other world powers are in talks with Tehran to curb its atomic program. The Obama administration would like GCC support for the deal to help convince a skeptical U.S. Congress it has broad backing in the region.
Although he will not offer a security treaty as some Gulf leaders desired, Obama will seek to allay their fears about the U.S. commitment to their defense needs.
"That will be the essence of the conversations: What can we do to modernize and deepen that security cooperation?" White House spokesman Josh Earnest said on Wednesday.
"And much of what the president has in mind is helping the GCC countries use the hardware that they have to better coordinate their efforts and better provide for the security of their citizens."
White House officials said on Monday the summit would produce announcements on integrating ballistic missile defense systems and increasing joint military exercises.
