Palm Springs gun control plan draws protesters
About a dozen Palm Springs gun owners and activists gathered outside Palm Springs City Hall Wednesday, holding homemade signs and speaking out against an item buried at the end of a city council agenda.
The impetus for the protest was a discussion item the Palm Springs City Council planned to discuss Wednesday evening, about potentially tightening city gun control measures.
Bob Richmond, former Riverside County Republican Party chairman, said he believed the ordinance would infringe on his Second Amendment rights.
“One of them is to go ahead and tell me that I have to, the government is telling me I have to keep my guns that are in the privacy of my home locked up in a lock box unless I have them in my possession,” Richmond said. “I see that as an overreach of government.”

Constitutional experts cite ongoing problems with no-fly list criteria
On Thursday, Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy announced plans to issue an executive order barring anyone listed on federal terrorist watch lists from purchasing a gun in the state. But while the idea of “no fly, no gun” has found growing support following the mass shooting in San Bernardino last week, including that of President Obama, experts say such a policy may be unconstitutional.
The problem lies with the terrorist watch lists themselves, which are both secret and routinely updated without the typical due process given to those who are accused of breaking the law, such as court proceedings. Without a trial, the government can add anyone to watch lists who it believes may be a threat to national security—and exactly how the government defines such a threat isn’t even public knowledge.

Of course, we weren't selling much on the internet back then but it was in 1978 that Wideners.com founder Stan Widener first starting selling shooting supplies and reloading components. An avid hunter, it didn't take much for the bug to swallow him whole and his passion for shooting sports quickly turned into a full-time career.

Wideners.com got its start in 1996 when the company opened up shop on the world wide web. Sure, the first site wasn't much to look at compared to today's site but we were pretty excited to have the chance to serve shooters all over the country with primers, powders and more. It's clear that a lot has changed in terms of technology but we still pride ourselves on always making time to treat our customers right.

Alta California became a part of Mexico in 1821 following its successful war for independence, but was ceded to the United States in 1848 after the Mexican–American War. The western portion of Alta California was organized as the State of California, which was admitted as the 31st state on September 9, 1850. The California Gold Rush starting in 1848 led to dramatic social and demographic change, with large-scale immigration from the east and abroad with an accompanying economic boom.

Palm Springs gun control plan draws protesters
About a dozen Palm Springs gun owners and activists gathered outside Palm Springs City Hall Wednesday, holding homemade signs and speaking out against an item buried at the end of a city council agenda.
The impetus for the protest was a discussion item the Palm Springs City Council planned to discuss Wednesday evening, about potentially tightening city gun control measures.
Bob Richmond, former Riverside County Republican Party chairman, said he believed the ordinance would infringe on his Second Amendment rights.
“One of them is to go ahead and tell me that I have to, the government is telling me I have to keep my guns that are in the privacy of my home locked up in a lock box unless I have them in my possession,” Richmond said. “I see that as an overreach of government.”

On Thursday, Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy announced plans to issue an executive order barring anyone listed on federal terrorist watch lists from purchasing a gun in the state. But while the idea of “no fly, no gun” has found growing support following the mass shooting in San Bernardino last week, including that of President Obama, experts say such a policy may be unconstitutional.
The problem lies with the terrorist watch lists themselves, which are both secret and routinely updated without the typical due process given to those who are accused of breaking the law, such as court proceedings. Without a trial, the government can add anyone to watch lists who it believes may be a threat to national security—and exactly how the government defines such a threat isn’t even public knowledge.

Of course, we weren't selling much on the internet back then but it was in 1978 that Wideners.com founder Stan Widener first starting selling shooting supplies and reloading components. An avid hunter, it didn't take much for the bug to swallow him whole and his passion for shooting sports quickly turned into a full-time career.

Wideners.com got its start in 1996 when the company opened up shop on the world wide web. Sure, the first site wasn't much to look at compared to today's site but we were pretty excited to have the chance to serve shooters all over the country with primers, powders and more. The MGM lion guards one of the largest hotels in the world with over five thousand rooms, whereas the Bellagio is a return to the exclusive nature of the casino hotels of the past: here, luxury is at its zenith - an investment of 1,8 billion dollars speaks for itself! Only two and a half hours by car to the west of Las Vegas is the USA’s most recent national park that extends to the opposite side of California’s border, Death Valley! Hi guys, I'm Veronica Hill with California Travel Tips. If you're a subscriber to this channel, you're either planning a trip to California, or you're a resident looking for new places to check out. Today I'm going to share some of my Top 10 travel tips for visiting California like a local.
Tip No. 1: Book California State Park campgrounds exactly 7 months before you want to visit on http://www.ReserveAmerica.com. If you're hoping to score a busy holiday like the Fourth of July, reserve a few dates in the end of June, then add a few days to your visit. Securing a campground in Yosemite is also tricky. You'll need to log into http://www.Recreation.gov a few minutes before 7 a.m. on the 15th of the month — five months in advance of your visit. Popular campgrounds in the valley sell out in seconds! For example, if you want to book a stay between June 15 and July 14, you need to book on February 15.
Tip No. 2: If you're going to Disneyland, take advantage of the FastPass service. Just insert your park ticket into the kiosk for a designated FastPass ride and you'll receive a ticket allowing you to return later and cut the line. I've found it's handy to have one person gather all of your tickets to get the Fast Pass while you wait in line for another attraction. If you have kids too small to ride an attraction, the Baby Switch Pass is another good bet. Just ask a cast member for the pass at the entrance. Make sure you ride the most popular attractions right when the park opens. Knott's has a similar service called FastLane, but you have to pay for it.
Tip No. 3: Avoid traveling in the summer if you can. Most of the amusement parks are packed to capacity, with long lines and hot waits in the sun. The fall and winter sees much fewer crowds, and the hotels are cheaper too.
Tip No. 4: Get on the Groupon list for each city you are visiting. You'll be able to get discounts on some really cool attractions and restaurants you may not have considered before. If you want great hotel rates, check out sites like Priceline or Hotel Tonight for last-minute lodging.
Tip No. 5: If you plan on visiting several theme parks or attractions, look into the Go Card or City Pass. They offer discounts on many of the most popular sights in LA, San Diego and San Francisco. If you're a Costco member, many warehouses sell discount tickets to theme parks, restaurants and sporting events.
Tip. No. 6: If there's an expensive restaurant you want to try, go during happy hour. Often you'll get to sample their best dishes and drinks at half the price.
Tip No. 7: Families should plan their San Diego vacations in October, when the city hosts its Kids Free month. Many of the area's most popular attractions, including San Diego Zoo, the Wild Animal Park and Balboa Park are free for kids 12 and under.
Tip No. 8: If your favorite hotel or campground is booked, try again seven days in advance. This is when many people cancel their reservations to avoid penalties.
Tip No. 9: If you're heading to more than one of the seven California national parks, consider getting the annual pass for $80. Admission is free for all the parks in April during National Parks Week, and in November during Veterans Day weekend.
Tip No. 10: For the best fares, book your trip midweek for flights departing and arriving on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. The cheapest rates can often be found online between 10 p.m. Wednesdays and 6 a.m. Thursdays around the 7th of each month. Additionally, the cheapest fares are found 7, 14 and 21 days before you leave.

EL CAJON - August 21, 2011 - An El Cajon Police officer is shot right in front of a news camera. The entire incident is caught on camera including the shots fired, officer rescue, SWAT standoff, house fire, helicopter water drops and more. The suspect, Kevin Collier, shot his 1-year old daughter and his mother-in-law. Police arrived and surrounded the home (including our photog). EL CAJON - August 21, 2011 - An El Cajon Police officer is shot right in front of a news camera. The entire incident is caught on camera including the shots fired, officer rescue, SWAT standoff, house fire, helicopter water drops and more.
The suspect, Kevin Collier, shot his 1-year old daughter and his mother-in-law. Police arrived and surrounded the home (including our photog). Officers were then met with gunfire from the suspect who had a rifle. Officer Jarred Slocum was leaning over the bed of a pickup truck with only his head exposed. He was struck in the left temple and the bullet exited the rear of his skull. He was NOT shot in the neck, as it appears and was initially perceived in the heat of the moment. The suspect then set the house on fire before shooting himself. The fire department could not approach the home because officers could not confirm if the suspect was dead or not. Firefighters are not going to walk up to a home with the possibility of a man inside with a rifle. Officers requested Mercy Air for transport, but instead took the wounded officer by ground in a patrol car as it would be quicker. This was on a dead-end street, so the rescue of having to pass the line of fire was incredibly risky. A gas line explodes at one point (bluish smoke). SWAT set up and worked with the fire department to help slow the rate of spread of the fire. Two helicopters began water drops, which is unheard of for a structure fire, but it was the most practical and safest way to control the flames. Officer Slocum is doing well but has decided to "medically retire" from the El Cajon Police Department, move, and go back to college. The officer who was with him, Officer Tim McFarland, was a rookie at the time and was being trained by Slocum. Officer Slocum's wound, although very serious, had very very little blood loss. So for those appauled that none of us applied pressure, quite frankly it wasn't necessary and it's easy to judge what one would do while sitting behind a computer. The bigger threat was the active shooter vs only a handful of officers. And for all you anti-cop commenters, keep in mind, officers are still people with families. The people in this video are heroes who were up against a crazed man set on death and destruction.

* The officer was shot in the left temple, not the neck. Period. I was there. I shot the video. It looks like he was shot in the neck, but he was in shock and holding the wrong area. You can see the exit wound in the back of his head in the video. See the followup interview with both officers if you still don't believe he was shot in the temple.
* The officer was actually shot 1/2 second before the video begins. Enable HD and pause the first few frames. You see him getting up from the chain link fence. He was thrown back from the force of the shot and bounced off the springy fence. He then gets up and returns fire.

Uniquely charged by its constitution to guarantee the "happiness" of its residents -- the state empowered its people to demand by referendum whatever they wanted to spend money on -- from better schools to bigger prisons and to refuse by referendum to pay the bills. A legislature paralyzed by the absence of a workable middle -- and a requirement for a 2/3 vote to impose taxes -- combined finally to dig the state into a possibly inescapable hole. Having now earned the lowest bond rating of any of the 50 states, the rates it pays to borrow keep getting higher. Yet borrowing seems to be all California can do to get through from day to day. That is what is known as The Road to Bankruptcy. "Happiness" thus engineered is doomed to collapse. The question is whether California is a special case--with a uniquely dysfunctional political culture--or a bellwether of failure soon to come to other high-spending states near you.

Racism in the United States has been a major issue since the colonial era and the slave era. Legally sanctioned racism imposed a heavy burden on Native Americans, African Americans, Asian Americans, and Latin Americans. European Americans (particularly Anglo Americans) were privileged by law in matters of literacy, immigration, voting rights, citizenship, land acquisition, and criminal procedure over periods of time extending from the 17th century to the 1960s. Many non-Protestant European immigrant groups, particularly American Jews, Irish Americans, Italian Americans, as well as other immigrants from elsewhere, suffered xenophobic exclusion and other forms of discrimination in American society.
Major racially structured institutions included slavery, Indian Wars, Native American reservations, segregation, residential schools (for Native Americans), and internment camps. Formal racial discrimination was largely banned in the mid-20th century, and came to be perceived as socially unacceptable and/or morally repugnant as well, yet racial politics remain a major phenomenon. Historical racism continues to be reflected in socio-economic inequality. Racial stratification continues to occur in employment, housing, education, lending, and government.
The 20th century saw a hardening of institutionalized racism and legal discrimination against citizens of African descent in the United States. Although technically able to vote, poll taxes, acts of terror (often perpetuated by groups such as the Ku Klux Klan, founded in the Reconstruction South), and discriminatory laws such as grandfather clauses kept black Americans disenfranchised particularly in the South but also nationwide following the Hayes election at the end of the Reconstruction era in 1877. In response to de jure racism, protest and lobbyist groups emerged, most notably, the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) in 1909.
This time period is sometimes referred to as the nadir of American race relations because racism in the United States was worse during this time than at any period before or since. Segregation, racial discrimination, and expressions of white supremacy all increased. So did anti-black violence, including lynchings and race riots.
In addition, racism which had been viewed primarily as a problem in the Southern states, burst onto the national consciousness following the Great Migration, the relocation of millions of African Americans from their roots in the Southern states to the industrial centers of the North after World War I, particularly in cities such as Boston, Chicago, and New York (Harlem). In northern cities, racial tensions exploded, most violently in Chicago, and lynchings--mob-directed hangings, usually racially motivated—increased dramatically in the 1920s. As a member of the Princeton chapter of the NAACP, Albert Einstein corresponded with W. E. B. Du Bois, and in 1946 Einstein called racism America's "worst disease."
The Jim Crow Laws were state and local laws enacted in the Southern and border states of the United States and enforced between 1876 and 1965. They mandated "separate but equal" status for black Americans. In reality, this led to treatment and accommodations that were almost always inferior to those provided to white Americans. The most important laws required that public schools, public places and public transportation, like trains and buses, have separate facilities for whites and blacks. (These Jim Crow Laws were separate from the 1800-66 Black Codes, which had restricted the civil rights and civil liberties of African Americans.) State-sponsored school segregation was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court of the United States in 1954 in Brown v. Board of Education. Generally, the remaining Jim Crow laws were overruled by the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act; none were in effect at the end of the 1960s.
Segregation continued even after the demise of the Jim Crow laws. Data on house prices and attitudes toward integration from suggest that in the mid-20th century, segregation was a product of collective actions taken by whites to exclude blacks from their neighborhoods. Segregation also took the form of redlining, the practice of denying or increasing the cost of services, such as banking, insurance, access to jobs, access to health care, or even supermarkets to residents in certain, often racially determined, areas. Although in the United States informal discrimination and segregation have always existed, the practice called "redlining" began with the National Housing Act of 1934, which established the Federal Housing Administration (FHA).
