This is a brilliant and very quick review of the Old Testament. What's most shocking (but accurate) is the depiction of the fall of Israel and its' people due to disobedience to GOD.

How could a loving God command the deaths of entire people groups, including women and children, in the Old Testament?
I know this could be the most difficult topic of the Bible. Richard Dawkins' being angry with God over this act is warranted if it was senseless violence. Frankly, I wouldn't serve him either if I could not see ANY justification. But placed in a hypothetical situation of my my own son (whom I love) killing my own grandchildren (whom I love), is now raping and killing my own daughter (whom I love), and is intending to do the same with my other children... I begin to understand the dilemma God was facing.
Would love for my daughter warrant my use of lethal-force in order to protect her? Would it be love to stand-by and do nothing? If my son killed my grandchildren and now was killing my other children, would it be just to kill him in order to protect my child and stop his spree?
If we can answer yes to these questions, then we can begin to understand the difficulty of God's decision.

"The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, NOT wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance." - 2 Peter 3:9 (emphasis added)

Old Testament
The Old Testament is the first section of the Christian Bible, based primarily upon the Hebrew Bible, a collection of religious writings by ancient Israelites. It is the counterpart to the New Testament, the second portion of the Christian Bible. The Old Testament canon varies between Christian Churches; Protestants and Latter-Day Saints accept only the books found in the canon of the Hebrew Bible, dividing them into 39 books, while the Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Oriental Orthodox Churches accept somewhat larger collections of writings.
The Old Testament consists of many distinct books written, compiled, and edited by various authors over a period of centuries. It is not entirely clear at what point the parameters of the Hebrew Bible, the basis for the Christian Old Testament, were fixed. Some scholars have opined that the canon of the Hebrew Bible was established already by about the 3rd century BC, or even later.
The books of the Old Testament can be broadly divided into several sections: 1) the first five books or Pentateuch (Torah); 2) the history books telling the history of the Israelites, from their conquest of Canaan to their defeat and exile in Babylon; 3) the poetic and "Wisdom" books dealing, in various forms, with questions of good and evil in the world; 4) and the books of the biblical prophets, warning of the consequences of turning away from God.

Richard Dawkins
Clinton Richard Dawkins FRS FRSL (born 26 March 1941) is an Englishethologist, evolutionary biologist, and writer. He is an emeritus fellow of New College, Oxford, and was the University of Oxford's Professor for Public Understanding of Science from 1995 until 2008.
Dawkins first came to prominence with his 1976 book The Selfish Gene, which popularised the gene-centred view of evolution and introduced the term meme. In 1982, he introduced into evolutionary biology the influential concept that the phenotypic effects of a gene are not necessarily limited to an organism's body, but can stretch far into the environment. This concept is presented in his book The Extended Phenotype. In 2006, he founded the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science.
Dawkins is a noted atheist, and is well known for his criticism of creationism and intelligent design. In his 1986 book The Blind Watchmaker, he argues against the watchmaker analogy, an argument for the existence of a supernatural creator based upon the complexity of living organisms. Instead, he describes evolutionary processes as analogous to a blind watchmaker. In his most popular book, his 2006 book The God Delusion, Dawkins contends that a supernatural creator almost certainly does not exist and that religious faith is a delusion. He is an opponent of creationism being taught in schools. He makes regular television and radio appearances, predominantly discussing his books, his atheism and his ideas and opinions as a public intellectual.

How could a loving God command the deaths of entire people groups, including women and children, in the Old Testament?
I know this could be the most difficult topic of the Bible. Richard Dawkins' being angry with God over this act is warranted if it was senseless violence. Frankly, I wouldn't serve him either if I could not see ANY justification. But placed in a hypothetical situation of my my own son (whom I love) killing my own grandchildren (whom I love), is now raping and killing my own daughter (whom I love), and is intending to do the same with my other children... I begin to understand the dilemma God was facing.
Would love for my daughter warrant my use of lethal-force in order to protect her? Would it be love to stand-by and do nothing? If my son killed my grandchildren and now was killing my other children, would it be just to kill him in order to protect my child and stop his spree?
If we can answer yes to these questions, then we can begin to understand the difficulty of God's decision.
