Cynthia Breazeal
Cynthia Lynn Breazeal (born November 15, 1967 in Albuquerque, New Mexico) is an Associate Professor of Media Arts and Sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she is the director of the Personal Robots Group (formerly the Robotic Life Group) at the MIT Media Laboratory. She is best known for her work in robotics where she is recognized as a pioneer of social robotics and human–robot interaction.
Biography
Cynthia Breazeal received her B.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1989, her S.M. in 1993 and her Sc.D. in 2000 in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, both from MIT.
She developed the robot Kismet as a doctoral thesis looking into expressive social exchange between humans and humanoid robots. Now you can see Kismet at the MIT Museum where you can find some of the other robots Breazeal co-developed while a graduate student at the MIT Artificial Intelligence Lab. Notable examples include the upper torso humanoid robot Cog and the insect-like robot Hannibal.

In this episode, she describes those projects as well as her work developing the groundbreaking social robots Kismet and Jibo, prototypes of what she calls “warm tech”—AI-enabled devices designed to be engaging, expressive, and personal.

When humans interact, they don’t just pass information from one to the other; there’s always some relational element, with the participants responding to each other’s emotional cues. Professor Cynthia Breazeal, MIT’s new Dean of Digital Learning, believes it’s possible to design this element into human-computer interactions as well. She foresees a day when AI won’t merely perform practical tasks for us, but also will provide us with companionship, emotional comfort, and even mental health support. But a future of closer human-AI collaborative relationships doesn’t only require technological development—it also requires us to learn what AI is capable of and how to interact with it in a more informed way. To further this goal, Professor Breazeal leads the Responsible AI for Social Empowerment and Education (RAISE) initiative at MIT, which runs an annual “Day of AI” program to promote better understanding of AI in the next generation of technology users and developers. In this episode, she describes those projects as well as her work developing the groundbreaking social robots Kismet and Jibo, prototypes of what she calls “warm tech”—AI-enabled devices designed to be engaging, expressive, and personal.

On April 28th and 29th Columbia University held its third annual, year-end capstone entrepreneurship event, the StartupColumbia Festival.
Day One of the Festival was the culmination of the $250,000 Columbia Venture Competition. More than 200 alumni judges from Brooklyn to Beijing helped narrow down a field of 160 Columbia startups to just 30 finalists. The winners were be announced on Day Two the Festival, a day-long conference. \

Cynthia Breazeal is an Associate Professor at the MIT Media Lab, where she founded and directs the Personal Robots Group. She is also founder and Chief Experience Officer of Jibo, Inc., a personal robotics and AI startup developing a social robot for the home. Her research focuses on the design and impact of highly personalized social robots that build a relationship with people to help them achieve meaningful goals. Dr. Cynthia Breazeal is founder and CEO of Jibo, Inc. She is also an Associate Professor at the MIT Media Lab where she directs the Personal Robots Group. Breazeal is recognized as a prominent innovator at the intersection of technology and society as the pioneer of Social Robotics. Her research spans both the creation of intelligent and socially responsive robots, as well as studying their impact on contributing to people’s quality of life across education & learning, creativity, health, telecommunications, aging, entertainment, play, and more. Jibo, Inc. brings the technologies, design insights, and user experience of social robots to the home as the world’s first family robot. The ability of autonomous robots to interact and work effectively with people is increasingly important: from improving worker productivity with robot teammates, to enhancing people’s quality of life with personal robots. Social robots interact with people in an interpersonal way to support the socio-affective dimension of human experience. This, in turn, impacts human behavior, attitudes and performance in intriguing ways. Such findings encourage us to think quite differently about robots, beyond performing physical tasks, to empowering us on a deeper human level: to learn better, to stay healthier, to care for and connect with one another with greater engagement, and more. The benefits of social robots could be transformative in areas of significant societal need that demand critical innovation. Nonetheless, this also motivates a thoughtful dialog about the desired role of intelligent, emotive technology in our lives, our relationship with it, and possible consequences.

Cynthia Breazeal
Cynthia Lynn Breazeal (born November 15, 1967 in Albuquerque, New Mexico) is an Associate Professor of Media Arts and Sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she is the director of the Personal Robots Group (formerly the Robotic Life Group) at the MIT Media Laboratory. She is best known for her work in robotics where she is recognized as a pioneer of social robotics and human–robot interaction.
Biography
Cynthia Breazeal received her B.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1989, her S.M. in 1993 and her Sc.D. in 2000 in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, both from MIT.
She developed the robot Kismet as a doctoral thesis looking into expressive social exchange between humans and humanoid robots. Now you can see Kismet at the MIT Museum where you can find some of the other robots Breazeal co-developed while a graduate student at the MIT Artificial Intelligence Lab. Notable examples include the upper torso humanoid robot Cog and the insect-like robot Hannibal.
