In this songwriting tip we look at several advanced songwriting techniques and production techniques.
First, look at examples of how songs like "Love Me Like You Do" by Ellie Goulding, "Hands of Love" by Miley Cyrus, and "Can't Feel My Face" by The Weeknd use their pre-chorus in the bridge.
We discuss how important it is that you need to be writing pre-choruses that are strong enough to be able to pull this off. These pre-choruses are catch in their own right and can stand on their own and go beyond the typical transitional function of a pre-chrous.
Next we look at how the production underlying the pre-chorus helps to enhance the transition into the choruses, especially the transition into the last chorus.
There are several production techniques discussed:
1. volume differentials (going from a quite pre-chorus to a loud chorus)
2. spectral differentials (going from a limited range of frequencies expressed in the pre-chorus to the expression of the full frequency spectrum in the chorus)
3. production density differential (going from minimal instrumentation to full-blown instrumentation)
4. extension of the pre-chorus by a few bars to create extra tension and anticipation
We pay particular attention to the differences between a typical preachers in the song, e.g., the pre-choruses before the first or second chorus, and how those differ from the pre-chorus in the bridge that transitions into the last chorus. We discuss how the final chorus is the main dish in the song and how all the songwriting and production techniques discussed help make that final transition into the final chorus the biggest moment of the song. It's the moment that everyone is waiting for.

This is a songwriting technique that has been used a lot lately! Taylor Swift uses it, Ryan Tedder from One Republic LOVES using it, DNCE uses it, and countless other hit songwriters and producers.
There's two parts to the songwriting technique. First, you use juxtaposition in the lyrics of your song. Juxtaposition is a term used describe putting two things together for the purpose of contrasting them. Here are some examples:
Taylor Swift - I Knew You Were Trouble:
-- "And he's long gone when he's next to me"
OneRepublic - I Lived:
-- "Hope when you take that jump, you don't fear the fall"
-- "Hope if everybody runs, you choose to stay"
-- "Hope that you fall in love, and it hurts so bad"
But these guys take this idea a step further by placing in a minimally produced Pre-Chorus going into a massive chorus.
This is a dynamics trick that producers use to make the chorus seem really big. When you go from quiet to super loud it makes the chorus seem larger than if you had just went from loud to louder.
This is actually a musical example of juxtaposition: you're juxtaposing quiet and loud to create a dramatic effect.
But the combination of the songwriting technique and production tip of juxtaposition make some wonderful things happen:
1. the lyrical juxtaposition is just cool
2. the minimal production allows the listener to focus on the lyrical juxtaposition which will probably be one of their favorite lines from the song
3. the minimal production in the pre-chorus give the chorus more context to appear massive. The chorus is already big, but when it follows a quieter section, it appears GARGANTUAN.
So, this is a songwriting technique and production tip that you have to be using!
If you want to know how to write songs or how to produce music, you have to listen to the pros. This is what the pros are doing and if you want to achieve success at that level, apply what you learn from them.

Song structure or the musical forms of songs in traditional music and popular music are typically sectional, repeating forms used in songs, such as strophic form and is a part of the songwriting process. Other common forms include thirty-two-bar form, verse-chorus form, and the twelve bar blues (the latter is used in blues and blues rock. Popular music songs are rarely composed using different music for each stanza of the lyrics (songs composed in this fashion are said to be "through-composed", an approach used in classical music). Pop and traditional forms can be used even with songs that have structural differences in melodies. A common format is intro, verse, pre-chorus, chorus, verse, pre-chorus, chorus, bridge ("middle eight"), verse, chorus and outro.

Miley Cyrus
Miley Ray Cyrus (born Destiny Hope Cyrus; November 23, 1992) is an American singer, songwriter, and actress. The Weeknd
Abęl Makkonen Tesfaye (born 16 February 1990), known professionally by his stage name The Weeknd (pronounced "the weekend"), is a Canadian singer, songwriter and record producer. Taylor Swift
Taylor Alison Swift (born December 13, 1989) is an American singer-songwriter. In this songwriting tip we look at several advanced songwriting techniques and production techniques.
First, look at examples of how songs like "Love Me Like You Do" by Ellie Goulding, "Hands of Love" by Miley Cyrus, and "Can't Feel My Face" by The Weeknd use their pre-chorus in the bridge.
We discuss how important it is that you need to be writing pre-choruses that are strong enough to be able to pull this off. These pre-choruses are catch in their own right and can stand on their own and go beyond the typical transitional function of a pre-chrous.
Next we look at how the production underlying the pre-chorus helps to enhance the transition into the choruses, especially the transition into the last chorus.
There are several production techniques discussed:
1. volume differentials (going from a quite pre-chorus to a loud chorus)
2. spectral differentials (going from a limited range of frequencies expressed in the pre-chorus to the expression of the full frequency spectrum in the chorus)
3. production density differential (going from minimal instrumentation to full-blown instrumentation)
4. extension of the pre-chorus by a few bars to create extra tension and anticipation
We pay particular attention to the differences between a typical preachers in the song, e.g., the pre-choruses before the first or second chorus, and how those differ from the pre-chorus in the bridge that transitions into the last chorus. In the past, we discussed Ternary Form and the fact that it is also called song form. This is due to the fact that many arias (operatic songs) are written in ternary form. However, we should not confuse this form with the modern forms used to compose contemporary pop (not meaning the specific genre of pop, but modern genres that use this form such as rock, pop, country, folk, etc.) songs. These types of songs can be written in a few different forms, but the most common is the verse/chorus song form. In the past, we discussed Ternary Form and the fact that it is also called song form. This is due to the fact that many arias (operatic songs) are written in ternary form. However, we should not confuse this form with the modern forms used to compose contemporary pop (not meaning the specific genre of pop, but modern genres that use this form such as rock, pop, country, folk, etc.) songs. These types of songs can be written in a few different forms, but the most common is the verse/chorus song form.
Verse/chorus song form is a popular (modern day) song form consisting of a least two musical sections (the verse and the chorus). This is not the only pop song form, but it is the most common. There are additional sections that can be utilized (such as a bridge and/or a pre-chorus), but these sections are not required. The simplest example of this form would be a song containing one verse and one chorus.
A verse/chorus song form can contain either one or multiple verses. Additional verses will consist of new lyrics being set to the same music (chords and melody line) as the first verse. A verse typically contains more words than a chorus. Verses are used to tell the story of the song. They are also typically are set to a melody that is lower in pitch when compared to the chorus.
There is usually only one chorus in this form. Although it may be repeated several times throughout the song, each repeat usually consists of the same lyrics and music. The chorus usually consists of fewer words in an attempt to make it catchy and memorable. The main idea or hook of the song is usually found in the chorus. Also, this section of the song is usually set to a melody that is higher in pitch when compared to the verse.
The natural flow of this form is to state a verse and then lead to the chorus. The music may return for a second (or third) verse, but that will lead back to the chorus. There are exceptions that start with the chorus, but even in those songs the natural verse to chorus flow exists (they just have a different starting point).
Some songs contain verses that do not clearly lead to the chorus. In these cases an additional section called a pre-chorus can be used to lead to the chorus. These sections are usually shorter in length when compared to the verse or the chorus. They allow for the restatement of important ideas, summery of verse material and exploration of new harmonic areas.
Some songs also require an additional section in order to provide an even greater climax. This is referred to as a bridge section. The bridge usually occurs just before the final chorus (after all of the verses). It can be used to lead into a modulation, or just to transition to a different musical idea that provides an even greater climax upon reaching the return of the final chorus.
The musical examples provided in this video help to demonstrate the application of this type of musical form. Understanding the use of verse/chorus song form will help us to be able to identify this technique when it occurs in everyday music.

In the past, we discussed Ternary Form and the fact that it is also called song form. This is due to the fact that many arias (operatic songs) are written in ternary form. However, we should not confuse this form with the modern forms used to compose contemporary pop (not meaning the specific genre of pop, but modern genres that use this form such as rock, pop, country, folk, etc.) songs. These types of songs can be written in a few different forms, but the most common is the verse/chorus song form.
Verse/chorus song form is a popular (modern day) song form consisting of a least two musical sections (the verse and the chorus). This is not the only pop song form, but it is the most common. There are additional sections that can be utilized (such as a bridge and/or a pre-chorus), but these sections are not required. The simplest example of this form would be a song containing one verse and one chorus.
A verse/chorus song form can contain either one or multiple verses. Additional verses will consist of new lyrics being set to the same music (chords and melody line) as the first verse. A verse typically contains more words than a chorus. Verses are used to tell the story of the song. They are also typically are set to a melody that is lower in pitch when compared to the chorus.
There is usually only one chorus in this form. Although it may be repeated several times throughout the song, each repeat usually consists of the same lyrics and music. The chorus usually consists of fewer words in an attempt to make it catchy and memorable. The main idea or hook of the song is usually found in the chorus. Also, this section of the song is usually set to a melody that is higher in pitch when compared to the verse.
The natural flow of this form is to state a verse and then lead to the chorus. The music may return for a second (or third) verse, but that will lead back to the chorus. There are exceptions that start with the chorus, but even in those songs the natural verse to chorus flow exists (they just have a different starting point).
Some songs contain verses that do not clearly lead to the chorus. In these cases an additional section called a pre-chorus can be used to lead to the chorus. These sections are usually shorter in length when compared to the verse or the chorus. They allow for the restatement of important ideas, summery of verse material and exploration of new harmonic areas.
Some songs also require an additional section in order to provide an even greater climax. This is referred to as a bridge section. The bridge usually occurs just before the final chorus (after all of the verses). It can be used to lead into a modulation, or just to transition to a different musical idea that provides an even greater climax upon reaching the return of the final chorus.
The musical examples provided in this video help to demonstrate the application of this type of musical form. Understanding the use of verse/chorus song form will help us to be able to identify this technique when it occurs in everyday music.
