Johnny Otis (born Ioannis Alexandres Veliotes; December 28, 1921 – January 17, 2012) was an American singer, musician, composer, arranger, bandleader, talent scout, disc jockey, record producer, television show host, artist, author, journalist, minister, and impresario. A seminal influence on American R&B and rock and roll, Otis discovered artists such as Little Esther, Big Mama Thornton, Jackie Wilson, Little Willie John and Hank Ballard and Etta James. Known as the original "King of Rock & Roll", he is commonly referred to as the "Godfather of Rhythm and Blues".
Otis was born in Vallejo, California, to Greek immigrants Alexander J. Veliotes, a Mare Island longshoreman and grocery store owner, and his wife, the former Irene Kiskakes, a painter. He had a younger sister, Dorothy, and a younger brother, Nicholas A. Veliotes, former U.S. Ambassador to both Jordan (1978–1981) and Egypt (1984–1986). He grew up in a predominantly black neighborhood in Berkeley, California, where his father owned a neighborhood grocery store. Otis became well known for his choice to live his professional and personal life as a member of the African-American community. He wrote, "As a kid I decided that if our society dictated that one had to be black or white, I would be black."

Esther Phillips (December 23, 1935 – August 7, 1984) was an American singer. Phillips was known for her R&B vocals, but she was a versatile singer, also performing pop, country, jazz, blues and soul music.
Born Esther Mae Jones in Galveston, Texas. When she was an adolescent, her parents divorced, and she was forced to divide her time between her father in Houston and her mother in the Watts area of Los Angeles. Because she was brought up singing in church, she was hesitant to enter a talent contest at a local blues club, but her sister insisted and she complied. A mature singer at the age of 14, she won the amateur talent contest in 1949 at the Barrelhouse Club owned by Johnny Otis. Otis was so impressed that he recorded her for Modern Records and added her to his traveling revue, the California Rhythm and Blues Caravan, billed as "Little Esther Phillips" (she reportedly took the surname from a gas station sign).
Her first hit record was "Double Crossing Blues", recorded in 1950 for Savoy Records. After several hit records with Savoy, including her duet with Mel Walker on "Mistrusting Blues", which went to number one that year, as did "Cupid Boogie". Other Phillips records that made it onto the U.S. Billboard R&B chart in 1950 include "Misery" (number 9), "Deceivin' Blues" (number 4), "Wedding Boogie" (number 6), and "Faraway Blues" (number 6). Few female artists, R&B or otherwise, had ever enjoyed such success in their debut year. Phillips left Otis and the Savoy label at the end of 1950 and signed with Federal Records.
"Double Crossing Blues' is a 1950 collaborative song by the Johnny Otis Quintette, The Robins, and Little Esther. The song was written by Johnny Otis. It was released as a 78 single on Savoy Records, 731-A, in 1950. The single went to number one on the R&B chart. The single was the debut single for Esther Phillips, who at the time of "Double Crossing Blues" release was fourteen years old, becoming the youngest female singer to have a number-one single on the R&B chart.
Blues is a genre and musical form that originated in African-American communities in the "Deep South" of the United States around the end of the 19th century. The genre developed from roots in traditional African music, combined with European American folk music. Blues incorporated spirituals, work songs, field hollers, shouts, and chants, and rhymed simple narrative ballads. The blues form, ubiquitous in jazz, rhythm and blues and rock and roll, is characterized by the call-and-response pattern, the blues scale and specific chord progressions, of which the twelve-bar blues is the most common. The blue notes (or "worried notes") which are often thirds or fifths which are flatter in pitch than in other music styles, are also an important part of the sound. Blues shuffles or walking bass reinforce the trance-like rhythm and form a repetitive effect called a groove.
Blues as a genre possesses other characteristics such as lyrics, bass lines, and instruments. The lyrics of early traditional blues verses consisted of a single line repeated four times. It was only in the first decades of the 20th century that the most common current structure became standard: the so-called AAB pattern, consisting of a line sung over the four first bars, its repetition over the next four, and then a longer concluding line over the last bars. Early blues frequently took the form of a loose narrative, often relating troubles experienced within African American society.

"Ma, He's Making Eyes At Me" alternatively sung as "Ma, She's Making Eyes At Me" is a famous song published in 1921. The lyrics are by the American composer and comedian Sidney Clare and music was by American songwriter and producer Con Conrad. Some of the earliest recordings are those by The Benson Orchestra of Chicago and Ted Lewis & his Orchestra both in 1921. Later recordings include Dick Robertson & His Orchestra released in December 1939 on Decca Records with the B-side "She Had to Go and Lose It at the Astor". Soon after the Merry Macs made a recording released in February 1940 again on Decca records with B-side as "Breezin' Along with the Breeze" followed by Riley Puckett in October 1940 on Bluebird Records with "Walking My Baby Back Home" as B-side. Lovely 1950s country tune by Jack Toombs, "You're the Only Good Thing", followed by Eric Satie's "Gnossiennes #5", a big hit from 1890. Then we have Michael Hurley's "Watertrain", and another 1950s tune, Johnny Otis' "Willie and the Hand Jive"! If you enjoy the talking, these two shows must be wonderful. (53 and 54) I promise to redo the Satie piece, since it picked up my tapping foot as very loud and distracting. Look for it about Show #67.

Otis Rush Live at Montreux 1986 (Feat. Eric Clapton and Luther Allison)
Johnny Otis, one of the pioneers of rhythm and blues, said he always wanted to be black. And for most people who heard his music, they though he was. He discovered and worked with some of the early great R & B vocalists who would lay the foundation for rock and roll. Otis produced Big Mama Thornton's original recording of "Hound Dog", which Elvis Presley would later re-record to help launch his career. I did this profile piece on Otis for the Today Show back in 1983.

Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Johnny Otis -- best known for writing the 1958 hit 'Willie and the Hand Jive' -- died Jan. 17 in Los Angeles. He was 90. According to the Los Angeles Times, Otis -- born Johnny Veliotes -- was raised in Berkeley, CA, and began playing drums in his early 20s around the Los Angeles R&B; scene which predominantly consisted of black artists performing with Otis, who was white. Today, he is considered by many to be the "Godfather of Rhythm and Blues." "When I got near teen age, I was so happy with my friends and the African American culture that I couldn't imagine not being a part of it," he said in a 1991 interview with the San Diego Union-Tribune. In 1946, Otis wrote an instrumental 'Harlem Nocturne' which was later covered by the Viscounts in 1960. But Otis w...

During the mid-1940's Rhythm and Blues became a more sophisticated form of Black music that involved a gospel-based secular form that dominated the juke boxes as the big bands came to an end. Instead of the jazz vocalists that began to reign in popular music, soulful and bluesy vocalists began to sing more sexual and mature music to a younger generation. Vocalists like Big Maybelle, Big Mama Thornton, Ruth Brown, and Dinah Washington were beginning to evolve. Rock and Roll would later come in the mid-1950's ushering again a new style of urban street corner singing that changed both Rock and R & B forever. A young record producer, arranger, and visionary named Johnny Otis would later discover and groom a young Jackie Wilson, Etta James, and Sugar Pie DeSanto. DeSanto, born Umpeylia Balinto...
