Uniformed services are bodies of people in the employ of a state that wear a uniform.
Typically the uniformed services of a state include:
In some countries the following may also be included:
The Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) is a health science university run by the U.S. federal government. The primary mission of the school is to prepare graduates for service to the U.S. at home and abroad in the medical corps.
The university consists of the F. Edward Hébert School of Medicine, a medical school, which includes a full health sciences graduate education program, the Graduate School of Nursing, a nursing school, and a postgraduate dental college. The university's campus is located in Bethesda, Maryland. USU was established in 1972 under legislation sponsored by U.S. Representative Felix Edward Hébert of Louisiana. It graduated its first class in 1980.
USU falls under the office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs. Formerly known by the acronym USUHS, it has officially adopted the abbreviated acronym USU.
The university is a federal service postgraduate academy. It is similar to the military federal service academies for undergraduates, such as the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, or the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, in that students are members of the uniformed services of the United States and are provided a free education by the federal government in exchange for a service commitment after graduation.
The following outline is provided as an overview of and topical guide to health sciences.
Health sciences are applied sciences that address the use of science, technology, engineering or mathematics in the delivery of healthcare.
A medical school is a tertiary educational institution—or part of such an institution—that teaches medicine, and awards a professional degree for physicians and surgeons. Such medical degrees include the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS, MBChB, BMBS), Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO). Many medical schools offer additional degrees, such as a Doctor of Philosophy, Master's degree, a physician assistant program, or other post-secondary education.
Medical schools can also employ medical researchers and operate hospitals. Around the world, criteria, structure, teaching methodology, and nature of medical programs offered at medical schools vary considerably. Medical schools are often highly competitive, using standardized entrance examinations, as well as grade point average and leadership roles, to narrow the selection criteria for candidates. In most countries, the study of medicine is completed as an undergraduate degree not requiring prerequisite undergraduate coursework. However, an increasing number of places are emerging for graduate entrants who have completed an undergraduate degree including some required courses. In the United States and Canada, almost all medical degrees are second entry degrees, and require several years of previous study at the university level.
Felix Edward Hébert (October 12, 1901 – December 29, 1979), known as F. Edward Hébert, was the longest-serving member of the United States House of Representatives from the state of Louisiana, having represented the New Orleans-based 1st congressional district as a Democrat from 1941 until his retirement in 1977.
Hébert was born in New Orleans to Felix Joseph Hébert and the former Lea Naquin. As a student at Jesuit High School there, he wrote prep-school sports for his future employer, the New Orleans Times-Picayune.
He graduated in 1924 from Tulane University in New Orleans and was the first sports editor of the Tulane Hullabaloo. He was a member of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity and the Young Men's Business Club of New Orleans. On August 1, 1934, Hébert married the former Gladys Bofill, and the couple had one daughter, Dawn Marie (born ca. 1936), who married a future judge of the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, John Malcolm Duhé, Jr., of Iberia Parish. The couple had four children, Kimberly Duhé Holleman (born ca. 1957), Jeanne Duhé Sinitier, Edward Malcolm Duhé (born ca. 1960), and Martin Bofill Duhé (born ca. 1962).
Each fall, the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences School of Medicine and Graduate School of Nursing conduct a full-scale medical field exercise, nicknamed "Operation Bushmaster," at an Army National Guard training base in central Pennsylvania. Military health care providers fly in from around the country to teach and grade participants as part of the Military Contingency Medicine course. The Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences commencement exercise is unlike any other graduation ceremony. Held annually on Armed Forces Day at the Daughters of the American Revolution Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C., the event incorporates the traditions and pomp and circumstance of both military service and academia. During Commencement, deans from each of USU's schools confer both master's and doctoral degrees to more than 200 students. This convocation marks the culmination of years of study and preparation for military and civilian members of each graduating class.
Military Field Practicum 201, nicknamed "Gunpowder" after its original planned location, the Gunpowder Military Reservation in Baltimore, Md., was a two-day third-year medical student exercise run by the medical school's Department of Military and Emergency Medicine to develop leadership skills, communication skills and better small group dynamics. For more than 20 years, the Physicians Committee has pushed the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences to stop using animals to train medical students. On Sept. 3, 2013, the university agreed. The video below, obtained by the Physicians Committee through the Freedom of Information Act, shows a live animal training previously performed at the university. In the video, a live pig is tethered to an operating table as a scalpel slices through the animal's skin and muscle. Later, the pig's chest is cracked open to allow an instructor to shock and manually manipulate the heart before the animal is killed. The Physicians Committee is calling on the last three medical schools that continue to use live animals to transition to nonanimal methods: Johns Hopkins University, the Universi...
