Hail to all of our listeners!
Today's episode deals with the topic of the great God Freyr and the Goddess Freyja! At this time of year when spring is taking hold and winter is finally loosing its iron grip of ice (we notice that more up here in the North than those down in the more Southerly climes) our thoughts turn to these great beings who represent fertility and growth among our people. It is our hope that you will receive some new insights perhaps, revive old insights and over all allow the energies of what these beings represent live within your heart and soul!
Many forget the high status that the godsFreyr had among our people though there is no question that Freyja was the greatest Goddess of our people next to Frigg herself! These names that we call them were actually titles not names as you will find out in the broadcast, and as they are of the gods and goddesses of the cycles of nature we find a great commonality here with many of the pagan religions of the ancient world. Many of the modern revivals of paganism are based around these gods and goddesses of the cycles (or their version of them) and we notice this greatly with the Celts. This is because the Celts, the Teutons, and the slabs all came from one culture at one time -- -- one that only separated into its divisions about 5000 years ago. There is also the arbitrary way in which these tribes were named which holds its suspicions, as it was the Romans who names the Celts, Slavs and Teutons (all Germanic) not based on knowledge of the People's but rather which side of the river they lived on.

Freyr, also spelled Frey, also called Yngvi, in Norse mythology, the ruler of peace and fertility, rain, and sunshine and the son of the sea god Njörd. Although originally one of the Vanir tribe, he was included with the Aesir. Gerd, daughter of the giant Gymir, was his wife. Worshiped especially in Sweden, he was also well-known in Norway and Iceland. His sister and female counterpart, Freyja, was goddess of love, fertility, battle, and death. The boar was sacred to both. Freyr and Freyja figure in many lays and stories of medieval Iceland.

Le 13 mars 2016, Sébastien Berthe est venu à bout de «Razorblade», un 8c à Freyr. Ouverte par Guy Van den Bergh et enchaînée la première fois par Nicolas Favresse en 2003, il aura fallu un an et demi à Séba pour réaliser la première répétition de cette voie mythique.
Derrière sa caméra, Loic Debry a pu immortaliser enchaînement ainsi que l’ambiance que l’on retrouve au jour le jour à Freyr.

Uppsala was perhaps the most important site for the Norse pagans. They used to hold an assembly called the Thing of all Swedes and a sacrifice called Dísablót in honour of the disir.
The 12th century Danish chronicler Saxo Grammaticus thought that Odin himself had lived here, but the site was more widely associated with Ingvi Frey, who was known as the Lord of the Swedes. Christian accounts of Ingvi Frey sometimes call him the king of Turkey or a son of Odin, but he was in fact a far older deity and one of the most important. The Icelandic chief and author of the Eddas, Snorri Sturlusson wrote that Ingvi-Frey had lived at Uppsalla.
He was associated with sacral kingship and divine blood, he founded the Yngling dynasty.
The 11th century German chronicler, Adam of Bremen also wrote of the importance of Uppsalla to the pagans. He said that the temple there was covered in gold and that it contained statues of Odin, Thor and Ingvi-Frey
Adam said that the people offered animal and human sacrifices to these idols and also to a nearby tree and a sping, both of which were sacred. They also worshipped heroic ancestors who had attained divinity in death by virtue of their great deeds in life.
He said that a great ceremony was held there every 9 years at the time of the spring equinox and that non-heathens also had to attend unless they paid a fee. 9 male animals of various species were sacrificed by hanging at this ceremony as well as 9 men. The heathens were said to chant during these sacrifices.
the Ynglinga saga relates that a man named Frey had been buried in a barrow at Uppsalla and continued to bring good harvests even after his death and people thought this would carry on for as long as Frey remained in Sweden. The Swedes then called him the god of this world and offered blood-sacrifices to him for peace and harvest.

About poem: Ever since the 19th century, the Skírnismál has been considered a "typical fertility myth" where the Sun God (Freyr) wakes up the slumbering Earth Goddess (Gerdr) after winter. This outdated interpretation bases itself on the preconception that all pre-Christian religions were about fertility and agricultural cycles and completely disregards the fact that in Old Norse myths, the Sun is female and considered among the goddesses, a fact that is enforced by the Old Norse language itself, where the word for sun (Sól) is a feminine noun and the fact that the poem itself describes the woman Gerdr, NOT Freyr, as having bright arms that illuminate all the worlds and which brighten heaven and the ocean. The first scholar to really break up with the old paradigm was Gro Steinsland who in the 1990´s argued that the poem is an initiation story where the goal of initiation is kingship through Sacred Sarriage with a giantess who represents the land over which the king is to rule, the giantesses representing the land, earth, feminine primeval forces, ancestral clan mother. (Read Steinsland for more info about this hypothesis, as it cannot be rendered satisfactorily in only a few lines). I have a different approach to this myth. The female main character of this story is to me obviously identical with Hel/Freyia, living as she does within the Underworld, surrounded by high and dangerous fences, a horrific Gate, guarded by Hel-Hounds, and by the famous Shepherd/Ferryman figure who sits on a burial mound and asks if the visitor is dead or dying since he is trying to get into the "bright halls" of the Maiden. Both Hel and Freyia are described as such and both characters represent Death and Fate (the ultimate Fate). Hel is known to have two sides to her face -- one representing decay and oblivion in death, the other representing resurrection and rememberance, Freyia embodying the latter whereas figures such as Skadi ("Harm") who runs with wolves represent the former. The Goddess in all her aspects is in Old Norse traditions a descendant of the Bronze Age Sun Goddess, a Goddess who also moved between darkness and light.Freyr represents one of the three aspects of the human nature: Passion (the other being Spirit and Mind.) In this story, he seeks marriage with the Goddess in the Underworld, and as I am trying to show through simple retelling of the tale with the proper translations offered, this union is about resurrection in death. The great paradox of this myth is that passion will be vanquished as soon as Freyr reaches his goal, and thus his resurrection also signifies his death -- at least his death as Passion. Scholars have been puzzled about the threats and curses thrown at Gerdr (the Goddess) in this poem, trying to figure out what they mean. I had to shorten down this part of the poem for the sake of space, but several stanzas are devoted to cursing the Goddess from the joy of company with human beings and from sexual pleasure with men -- if she does not agree to give her "Whole Soul" (Heila Húgr) to Freyr, she will end up as an ogress in Hel, loved only by trolls. It has been pointed out that the curses simply represent a poetical way of describing the facts: if the Goddess remains in the Underworld, she will indeed represent nothing but Death and Oblivion and will be feared by humans, loved only by destructive forces. If she agrees to marry Freyr, she will be a part of the divine Pantheon, she will be loved, she will represent resurrection and wisdom. I also believe that this is what the curses represent. At the same time, the curses may trick us into believing that the Goddess gives into the threats, and few seem to have noticed the fact that it is the Goddess who tricks the assailant: Yes, she WILL marry Freyr, but ONLY after "the Nine Nights", and ONLY in the "Quiet, Breezeless Grove". Freyr
Freyr or Frey is one of the most important gods of Norse religion. The name is conjectured to derive from the Proto-Norse *frawjaz, "lord". Freyr was associated with sacral kingship, virility and prosperity, with sunshine and fair weather, as well as was pictured as a phallic fertility god, Freyr "bestows peace and pleasure on mortals". Freyr, sometimes referred to as Yngvi-Freyr, was especially associated with Sweden and seen as an ancestor of the Swedish royal house.
In the Icelandic books the Poetic Edda and the Prose Edda, Freyr is presented as one of the Vanir, the son of the sea god Njörðr, as well as the twin brother of the goddess Freyja. The gods gave him Álfheimr, the realm of the Elves, as a teething present. He rides the shining dwarf-made boar Gullinbursti and possesses the ship Skíðblaðnir which always has a favorable breeze and can be folded together and carried in a pouch when it is not being used. He has the servants Skírnir, Byggvir and Beyla.
The most extensive surviving Freyr myth relates Freyr's falling in love with the female jötunn Gerðr. Eventually, she becomes his wife but first Freyr has to give away his magic sword which fights on its own "if wise be he who wields it". Although deprived of this weapon, Freyr defeats the jötunn Beli with an antler. However, lacking his sword, Freyr will be killed by the fire jötunn Surtr during the events of Ragnarök.

Although originally one of the Vanir tribe, he was included with the Aesir. Gerd, daughter of the giant Gymir, was his wife. Worshiped especially in Sweden, he was also well-known in Norway and Iceland. His sister and female counterpart, Freyja, was goddess of love, fertility, battle, and death. Many forget the high status that the godsFreyr had among our people though there is no question that Freyja was the greatest Goddess of our people next to Frigg herself! These names that we call them were actually titles not names as you will find out in the broadcast, and as they are of the gods and goddesses of the cycles of nature we find a great commonality here with many of the pagan religions of the ancient world. Many of the modern revivals of paganism are based around these gods and goddesses of the cycles (or their version of them) and we notice this greatly with the Celts. This is because the Celts, the Teutons, and the slabs all came from one culture at one time -- -- one that only separated into its divisions about 5000 years ago. There is also the arbitrary way in which these tribes were named which holds its suspicions, as it was the Romans who names the Celts, Slavs and Teutons (all Germanic) not based on knowledge of the People's but rather which side of the river they lived on.
It is our hope that this vintage broadcast from the old NRR is one that will speak your heart and that will move your soul. Let the God of inspiration (Odin) who is the All Father allow more than just your intellect to be opened when you hear about these great beings Freyr and Freyja!

Uppsala was perhaps the most important site for the Norse pagans. They used to hold an assembly called the Thing of all Swedes and a sacrifice called Dísablót in honour of the disir.
The 12th century Danish chronicler Saxo Grammaticus thought that Odin himself had lived here, but the site was more widely associated with Ingvi Frey, who was known as the Lord of the Swedes. Christian accounts of Ingvi Frey sometimes call him the king of Turkey or a son of Odin, but he was in fact a far older deity and one of the most important. The Icelandic chief and author of the Eddas, Snorri Sturlusson wrote that Ingvi-Frey had lived at Uppsalla.
He was associated with sacral kingship and divine blood, he founded the Yngling dynasty.
The 11th century German chronicler, Adam of Bremen also wrote of the importance of Uppsalla to the pagans. He said that the temple there was covered in gold and that it contained statues of Odin, Thor and Ingvi-Frey
Adam said that the people offered animal and human sacrifices to these idols and also to a nearby tree and a sping, both of which were sacred. They also worshipped heroic ancestors who had attained divinity in death by virtue of their great deeds in life.
He said that a great ceremony was held there every 9 years at the time of the spring equinox and that non-heathens also had to attend unless they paid a fee. 9 male animals of various species were sacrificed by hanging at this ceremony as well as 9 men. The heathens were said to chant during these sacrifices.
the Ynglinga saga relates that a man named Frey had been buried in a barrow at Uppsalla and continued to bring good harvests even after his death and people thought this would carry on for as long as Frey remained in Sweden. The Swedes then called him the god of this world and offered blood-sacrifices to him for peace and harvest.

About poem: Ever since the 19th century, the Skírnismál has been considered a "typical fertility myth" where the Sun God (Freyr) wakes up the slumbering Earth Goddess (Gerdr) after winter. This outdated interpretation bases itself on the preconception that all pre-Christian religions were about fertility and agricultural cycles and completely disregards the fact that in Old Norse myths, the Sun is female and considered among the goddesses, a fact that is enforced by the Old Norse language itself, where the word for sun (Sól) is a feminine noun and the fact that the poem itself describes the woman Gerdr, NOT Freyr, as having bright arms that illuminate all the worlds and which brighten heaven and the ocean. The first scholar to really break up with the old paradigm was Gro Steinsland who in the 1990´s argued that the poem is an initiation story where the goal of initiation is kingship through Sacred Sarriage with a giantess who represents the land over which the king is to rule, the giantesses representing the land, earth, feminine primeval forces, ancestral clan mother. (Read Steinsland for more info about this hypothesis, as it cannot be rendered satisfactorily in only a few lines). I have a different approach to this myth. The female main character of this story is to me obviously identical with Hel/Freyia, living as she does within the Underworld, surrounded by high and dangerous fences, a horrific Gate, guarded by Hel-Hounds, and by the famous Shepherd/Ferryman figure who sits on a burial mound and asks if the visitor is dead or dying since he is trying to get into the "bright halls" of the Maiden. Both Hel and Freyia are described as such and both characters represent Death and Fate (the ultimate Fate). Hel is known to have two sides to her face -- one representing decay and oblivion in death, the other representing resurrection and rememberance, Freyia embodying the latter whereas figures such as Skadi ("Harm") who runs with wolves represent the former. The Goddess in all her aspects is in Old Norse traditions a descendant of the Bronze Age Sun Goddess, a Goddess who also moved between darkness and light.Freyr represents one of the three aspects of the human nature: Passion (the other being Spirit and Mind.) In this story, he seeks marriage with the Goddess in the Underworld, and as I am trying to show through simple retelling of the tale with the proper translations offered, this union is about resurrection in death. The great paradox of this myth is that passion will be vanquished as soon as Freyr reaches his goal, and thus his resurrection also signifies his death -- at least his death as Passion. Scholars have been puzzled about the threats and curses thrown at Gerdr (the Goddess) in this poem, trying to figure out what they mean. I had to shorten down this part of the poem for the sake of space, but several stanzas are devoted to cursing the Goddess from the joy of company with human beings and from sexual pleasure with men -- if she does not agree to give her "Whole Soul" (Heila Húgr) to Freyr, she will end up as an ogress in Hel, loved only by trolls. It has been pointed out that the curses simply represent a poetical way of describing the facts: if the Goddess remains in the Underworld, she will indeed represent nothing but Death and Oblivion and will be feared by humans, loved only by destructive forces. If she agrees to marry Freyr, she will be a part of the divine Pantheon, she will be loved, she will represent resurrection and wisdom. I also believe that this is what the curses represent.
